I bought a new dr650 back in 95' it was a high speed machine that would tag the 120 mark when new. Rode it 12,000 miles without so much as a valve adjustment. The only trouble I had with it was the tank cracked right at the bolt by the seat. Bought a 7 gallon monster tank for it which gave me a heck of a range. After that bike I bought a new 2000 KTM LC4 640, great bike. Rode it till 2018 when I got to old ( almost 60) to swing my leg over the stupid tall seat height. So I bought a new unsold 2017 dr200 for it's low seat and because I used to have a 87' sp200, same exact bike as the dr except now it's electric start. Sure the dr200 is a heck of a lot slower than the ktm but I'm old and the dr was reduced to $2995.00 I couldn't pass that up.

Thank you for the review and information ! That's interesting at 2:33 how they did not change much over the years . If it's working great don't change anything ! 👍

In 2016 they had a major upgrade, a $7 counter shaft seal retainer....lol. But still no lock tight on the NSU. The aftermarket is huge and you can make the DR into anything you want.

There are many good reasons for having the oil in the frame, it's called a dry sump system, it prevents cavitation and foaming of the oil created by the spinning crank, the system also holds more oil which keeps the engine running cooler, as well the engine can be shorter in height without the need for an oil pan type design.

I even bought a “trashed” dr650 that was pretty neglected. After a carb clean it worked like a champ. Best part was it was only $1500.

@@ranter7100 sorry to hear that brother - one thing l’ll mention is I bought that DR back in 2018, and I think prices weren’t as inflated back thenb

A couple changes due to environment emissions is that the newer bikes now have a carbon canister where your tool kit is and the tool kit mounts under the grab handle. Around 2021 most countries also had a 2nd air system added which is mounted to the down tube on the left side just above the exhaust pipe and below the horn. I will leave mine alone for now but down the road I will probably rip it all off. The latest video I have on my channel is a quick and dirty walkaround and as I come around to the left side of the bike you can see them. I was looking at dealer ads and it looks like all bikes sold now in the USA and Canada come this way.

Just bought a 96' with 20k on it for 1k in amazing shape. Love riding the bike, a lot more power coming from an xt250. Still have the xt cause the dr is definitely heavy on some harder off roading but it's still manageable until you hit tight ruts and larger rocky stuff. Climbing larger hills is much easier with the extra power though😁

Where are you seeing $8500 plus taxes and fees for a new DR??? MSRP is $6799. I got a new one for like $6500 plus tax and fees last year.

with little bit of negotiations, the dealers would normally let it go somewhere between 6-6.3k (out the door, brand new) here in Oregon. Unfortunately, Covid has created shortages on everything..so for now, discounts are things of the past until it all recovers again...I think its better to just wait until things normalize again.

I just purchased a 2021 DR 650 in Arkansas. List price at dealer was $6799. Add $1000 to that fir freight shipping / assembly. $7800 out the door. Last year at this time the freight shipping and assembly was $650. The day I bought my DR the owner of the dealership said everything (Powersports machines) they had in stock was going up between $600 to $800 the next day. Supply chain issues are driving the price increase. You can’t even wheel and deal by a damn penny.

The reason that the bike did not change, or update is because if the factory changes the bike too much then it has to be updated to meet current emissions rules (catalytic converter, fuel injection, re-breathers, etc), and that would make the bikes much heavier, more complicated, and more expensive. That is why the XR650L and DR650 haven't really changed over the years. They are both really good bikes for the money, very reliable, and easily modified to suit the owner's needs.

So it's a good old people bike. I'm 64 going on 25 so I'm good with that. I want a new one simply because I'm not sure what someone has done to a used one. And Suzuki gets to say they sold another one. Lots cheaper than me buying a BMW GSA in many ways, including dumping one in the dirt since I have very little off-road time. Anyway, the bike you have here looks awesome. If I could find something similar then I'd consider used.

Is ANYONE HERE STILL? This is going to be my first bike. I inherited it and have fixed it up. I put 80/20 tires on and plan on only driving around town and in the country, all on the road. Do you all think this will be too strong for me?

I'm looking at a smoking deal on 2013 DR650 with only 2K miles on it the problem is the bike is in Florida and I'm in California, my question is do all DR650 meet California emissions or do they have a federal version and the California version because if the the bike is a federal version it has to have 7,500 mile to get registered here in California if you attempt to register it with less miles the Ca DMV will permanently black ball that vehicle so it can never be registered in California, we are so screwed out here.
@BraapEffex

Not sure, California is really strict now with emissions... Wish I could help but unfortunately I am not sure...

I would never change that muffler for a loud racing can--it makes em sound obnoxious and there's little to no improvement in power.-yet every new rider believes he can "unlock the power" by making it loud.

this dude doesn't even know of the changes. the 2017+ models are best due to the haft seal getting a retainer plate installed, the Neutral Sending Unit in the engine being locktited, bad base gasket being replaced, idler gear issue fixed, and chain roller frame damage issue.

Great video, but oh please don't make it louder. A big single never sounds good with a loud pipe, and really annoys literally everyone who hears it. Keep it quiet, everyone else will be thankful.
