My DR stated popping out of 6th gear today while I was riding out in the desert, I'm sure glad I found this video, going to open up the clutch cover tomorrow.

Good deal, it may be easier for you to take the clutch assembly off. You just don't want to bend the little detent wheel while tightening. Hope it helps!

After opening up the clutch cover I found that the shift detent bolt is broken and the threads are stuck in the shift drum. I broke two extractors trying to remove the broken piece so it looks like I'll be splitting the case.

My 95 has a hard time finding neutral too. Sometimes it's literally easier to just turn the bike off, shift into neutral and then start back up. Idk what it is but when the bike is running you really have to work to get it into N

Make sure your clutch doesn't have too much free play and not fully disengaging. Finding neutral by itself without any other issues could be clutch related.

@@PSBEadventures i have the same issue as above, i read the service manual and it says there should be free play and essentially no tension on the clutch line when clutch handle released , however your are the second person that say that that it should not be fully disengaging IE that there should be a little bit of tension. . . . . . i thought if there is tension on the clutch aka no free play that it could cause the clutch to slip , so confused lol. . .. id appreciate any assistance, should i adjust so that there is tension on the clutch???

@@mikeriverajr4447 a tiny bit of free play is the way it should be. Take all the free play out and see if it's better. And then put a tiny bit back in. There is a chance you have this same issue in the video or the clutch basket has some grooves worn in it from the fiber plates. If you take all the free play out that's not quite the same as adjusting the free play out and actually adjusting it past that point and actually causing it to disengage some. There's a fine line there. If a clutch slips because it has a tiny bit of pressure due to maladjustment, it's time for a clutch

@@mikeriverajr4447 I know it's super tough to explain. I tell ya what, if you'll sub to the channel I'll make you a promise to make a video.on exactly how to adjust the clutch and do it on the DR. Subbing will tell ya when it goes up if you hit the notification bell

@@PSBEadventures I actually added this vid to a youtube playlist of mined i thought i subed as well but guess i didnt, sorry, you definitely deserve a sub and definitely just got one plus a notification bell, im gonna give a little bit a back story to give context, , always dreamed of owning a dual sport, found the 93 kick model for 1.7k test drove it and it drove great[except for it being very hard to find neutral, drove it home [about 5 miles] and by the time i got home bike started back firing and jumping in out of gear, to be fair, on the test drive home i drove it like i stole It and did not baby it AT ALL, I like driving hard and feel any good running bike should have no issue doing that. . well the bike litterly popped in and out of 2nd and 3rd under hard accel and shifting so hard that it nearly locked up the tire and stalled the engine when it reenagaed randomly at abou 20 mph and the shifter felt and still feels mushy leaving me wondering sometimes did i even change gears or what gear im in. . after this occured i felt like i wanted to puke and cry in the same sentence I littlery just blew all my money on a dream of mine to find out that i likley got ripped off, after a bunch of research learned about these drum issues with this bolt this gave me some degree of relief. . however whats still very concerning is that , the guy i bought it from vaguely mentioned tightening a boly in the transmission [this flew over my head since it seemed irrlevant as when i drove it drove fine at first] but the concerning part is that if he supposedly put the bolt back why is this issue still there????? he seemed mechaniclly competant and even put fresh gaskets on the case. . . . its a million dollar question, my guess that is either he lied and the bolt is broke off in the block and he jerry riggged just enought so that it would last until i got home OR the bolt got caught in one of the gears and did damage and he was just trying to off the bike , either way if he supposedly completled the job what gives. the motor is very strong and seems to be in great condition except for the carb breaking up under hard load arround 5 k[it essentially will not rev past this to break up and back fire . and it also still back firing when hot on decel. . he said he cleaned the carb which i belive since he revived it from sitting for 10 years. . ive cleaned carbs before but to me it seems like its a tuning issue . . you mentioned you did this for a living ? do you have a shop or website [im in lee county florida] , do you rebuild and tune carbs, if so maybe i can send out to you , I drove it to day but drove much much ligher when shifting and the issue shifter was much less noticable when you baby it

You didn't find the rest of that shift drum bolt? Terrifying.

I dug around off camera forever for it, after inspecting that bolt closely, I'm pretty sure it had been chewed on by the gears meshing.

Any chance you remember the part # for that bolt? I have the same problem...thanks!

Yep, in the description below the video. Also it's a good idea to remove the clutch so you can remove the shift detent roller, it can get bent out of whack if you aren't careful. Thanks for stopping by! Tons more adventures on the DR here!
