Got my 2019 Jimny 3 weeks ago - love it. All seats fold flat so one can sleep in it. Ran it at highway speed - well planted, smooth & quiet for this type of vehicle. Fuel consumption - 6.4L/100 for manual, 6.9 for auto. Wading depth is in the handbook, but I forget. Extra 12v outlet at rear for my fridge.
@@WatchmakersApprentice I prefer 100. That's 3000 rpm with the auto. 110 would be a little noisier but quite achievable. Saw a youtube of a guy in Spain doing 130 on the highway. Overtaking at highway speed would need to be carefully considered. Acceleration is not so great.
What?😮 In Germany with tax ca. 50k for the Toyota (only unofficall Import, LX) and the Suzuki (full, manuell Gearbox, Comfort+) round 20k Euro. Thanks and sorry for my bad english. 😃
@@SimsonBoyRW2 Try the Netherlands! My hilux was 26K eur without taxes. As commercial drive that's ok and wil end up at 41K eur. as a consumer however you'd see the 80K range. Bet you the troopy is atleast that.... if at all possible. Jimney is available from € 26.155 including all taxes. Not sure what the troopy would do, but as a private person I'd get 3 Jimney's and 1 X1 from Patriot Campers Australia Ah @david collins might as well be in the Netherlands,EU :P by the way, as I do own a business I'm happy with my 2015 Vigo Hilux DC with a Rhino Evolution bar and custom (polish) rock sliders.
Learned to drive in a 1987 Sierra in Alice Springs. During free periods of yr 12 I'd take my buddy and a couple of sheilas for a quick thrash with some cheeky warm beers. Every time I see one on the road I'm filled with nostalgic longing. I will buy this zook next year. Mark my words.
Aw me too. Nostalgia like my IDIOT sister who rolled TWO of my dad's Sierras on loose gravel, which forced me to learn in my stepmums PINK HYUNDAI EXCEL lol
Small 4x4's are a lot of fun. Can go places the bigger units can't fit through. But the little ones can't carry much unless they have a tray version. My Daihatsu F25 was a hoot. The new Jimny has a lot of those positives. A longer wheelbase version would be good.
Some more focused off road tyres, a roof rack, a winch, a light bar and snorkle kit would make the jimny a perfect outback explorer. Only thing that would be an obstacle for some is the lack of space so you would have to pack light.
yep, only socks and jocks for one of those trips in a Jimmy. Nearly forgot...and a bottle of water and emergency kit of course. Safety first folks! ;) ps: i love them both
Impossibly light, I’ve done a spreadsheet and it’s always over GVM. Roof is only rated for 30kg... even with the smallest fridge, lithium second battery... 2 adults and your over. Forgot about a winch and front bar as it’s even more weight. You have 340kg to play with... including passengers and fuel
Great comparison I reckon. Both of these vehicles are based on very old design, rock solid, and ultra reliable. They’ve both solidified themselves as awesome 4x4’s over a very long period of time and represent something for all budgets. I can’t think of any other 4x4’s that have been on the market for so long with the same basic design. If your in the middle of the bush, simplicity wins for me. Some basic upgrades like a 2” lift, snorkel, and bullbar would be great, although for an occasional weekend warrior there both fine. Great journalism 👍
Two very different vehicles but great review. The last of the true solid axle vehicles. Hopefully the Jimny sells well and the aftermarket puts out some decent products in line with its light weight philosophy. A small lift and bigger tyres would be a good place to start.
My OCD at the Troopy's reverse staggered front n rear track... though I love 78 series LC's coz I used to work with them. The steering response that feels like you're ruddering a concrete barge with a paper plate, the turning circle that orbits the sun, agricultural gearbox from a tractor, the cascading waterfall of water that saturates you when you open the door after a downpour, the doors you have to slam so hard to shut they should come with a 'may dent door in process' sticker - these things are BEAST & utilitarian alternate fun lol Still, I'll take the Jimny & buy overseas holidays + a Toyota 86 with the spare change to a Troopy.
Yep, the odd front and rear wheel track are a bit on the nose ... but you can't beat all of those quirky charming Troopy characteristics that you listed. Sometimes old school is the best school. - Crafty
I 've got the previous model Jimny. Definitely a jewel, with enough for what I need! is there perhaps a comparison between the old and new models somewhere?
Protip from a jimny owner, go straight to 10psi off road. They're so light the low pressure doesn't do any damage, it gives you more traction and most importantly, you don't need a spine reconstruction after a day's off roading ;) Also, not sure what on road pressures you were running but around 26-28 is a great balance between ride, handling and tyre wear. Great video :)
Great the-pressure tips, mate! So many people don't realise that tyre pressures are often the difference between having an ordinary time in a car (any car) and having a great (and comfortable and safe) time in a car. - Crafty
@@thnderdownunder9514 I am a Toyota Fan, but must admit the GU is a damn fine 4x4. I still won't buy one though because Nissan does not seem to be faithful to us 4x4ers.
I like the Jimny and would have one in a heart beat but the Troopy has the Load Space which is a concern because most of us own a 12v Fridge or Two, Yes they would fit in the Jimny with the seats down but then you would need a light trailer for the rest of your gear which is not a problem. The Troopy wins out due to the shear Load Space otherwise I'd have the Jimny.
Had a Jimny and my only complaint is that is a bit small. In this age of design, technology the Toyota HJZ 76 is still dream car. Simple and honest truck !
now we just need suzuki realises how abandoned is the actual 4x4 market, stretches the jimny, and give it 2 more doors, and i well get one as a substitute to my old samurai longbody
Peter Patina that will be good too, i think australia got a ute version of the samurai, that will be nice, suzuki got all the market for themselves, why not??
@@jamescrowther7611 yep, I live in Australia but I want the new model to come out with the tray top. If I had the money I'd convert the Jimny to a tray top. I can only dream.
My son swears by his troopie. I just ordered my new Jimny manual today, possibly 12month wait. He doesn't know as yet, and will it be interesting to do our own day trip comparison one day.
It's actually the 2002 Chevy tracker zr2 package. Has 24 valve v6 and full skids. I removed the plastic all the way around and put 235 tires on with no rub
Seeing that they're both unavailable in Canada, I'd be happy to get either of them! My JLUR Rubicon would love a younger and/or older brother to play with.
Its like saying would you rather have a night with your wife or the young cheer leader ! One is fun but unstable other is older but more stable but a little boring
Having owned an Africa spec , non power steering 1hz 80series (1992) I would add 2 doors and minus two digits from the 78 , yes I would take a 76 all day long . The Jimney is a nimble weekend toy , as soon as you are eating 700km+ in a sitting without stopping for feul , the Jimny is out . I currently have a tdv8 Range Rover and just the other day I did 1327km on 105l of feul . Thats right , I was behind the wheel for 13 hours . I have done similar trips in the 80 series too . I would have been stranded before the next feul stop in the Jimny , if you're a city slicker who wants to go play in the dirt , the Jimny is your car . If you want and need a dedicated long distance offroader , the Land Cruiser will not let you down .
Horses for course, neither is the winner. Toyota good for deep wading, Jimny good for scrambling. Im betting the Jimny would make it up hill passes and loose rocks much better than the Toyota. A good review, but limited for the cars abilities.
I own a 2001 pristine Suzuki Samurai as a daily driver, and I love it. I just came back from a 3weeks 4x4 round trip in Namibia with a 2014 stock toyota Hilux. Sorry, but nothing beats Toyota 4x4s : my Suzuki would have died 3 times during my holidays, and the toyota held up very good, even after 20 kilometers of big dry river stones at 20km/h - I like the Jimny .. but well.. he loses generation after generation his ruggedness. This year they thrown the temp gauge. This same temp gauge that told me that my radiator was rusting from inside and saved my Samurai engine.
Fun Jimny, as I don't have the large carrying capacity requirements, and a pocket city car that can stand shoulder to shoulder with a Troopy is proper witchcraft.
I own both but a 76 series wagon not a troop carrier, I can definitely tell you they are both awesome machines but I do agree the 70 feels a lot more stable and more at home off road but the jinny is smaller and can get you through the narrow tracks with ease if I had to choose only one I’d say the jimmy because it’s a lot cheaper and can keep up with the big 70 but I wish Suzuki made the jimmy with a turbo Diesel engine then it would be even more awesome , but on longer trips I prefer my 76 just has more practically and you can fit a lot more stuff in it with ease. Plus the 130l fuel tank gets me a lot more range they both have there positives and negatives.
Both excellent 4x4s. Jimnys lack of load capacity v Landcruiser.......no contest. But as a bloke from the bush who already has a bigger 4x4 for towing and cruising, I can easily see myself having the Jimny for something to zip to town in, and parking would be easy as. It would be a barrel of fun and a good second vehicle.
Fun v Functional, good analogy. Plus, made for different purposes... so right again. Only point I'd make is the Troopy is too top heavy, saw a bunch of them on their side in Africa in some pretty tough conditions. I'd pick the Cruiser Wagon over Troopy anytime, for the long range stuff. But for the Short fun trips, Jimny every time.
jimny for me. i can squeeze through the coconut and banana trees and through bushes and not worry much about the paint cause its cheap and i can park easily. good only for short distance travel though.
Choosing between the two would really be a life and death situation.but putting myself in one ....I would most definitely choose and recommend the Toyota . On the latter ,the jimny is good ,but it's not a Toyota Land cruiser . How many wars have the jimny been in....In Africa ....you can't start a war without a Land cruiser
I'm a Troopy proud owner. . if you wanna have fun... Get a quad or a bike. If you wanna do everything all in one... The best two person Overland vehicle in the world. The troop carrier
I have a Jimny lol.. It goes anywhere like a billy goat.. I even have a goat decal in my rear windshield lol.. I love buzzing lightly past 4Runners and Tacoma's and Raptors as they are stuck in sand lol.. She's super light
I have a Jimny and think a troopy would be good but not here in Japan. Too many roads that a big car won't fit down, no tracks are wide enough for much more than a jimny, and a really hard time finding a place to park a troopy. Horses for courses.
So many farmers around where I live in the high country of Victoria swear by their "old" Suzuki vehicles. They never get bogged in winter and they just do the job...in fact some old Suzuki cars are becoming collectors items like the Subaru Brumby which is also highly regarded by farmers.Excellent review between the Beast and the smaller box like car!
I owned a Troopy & so loved much about it. What I didn't like and could not understand is how the hell Toyota could sell a vehicle that a handbrake that just would not hold on a steep hill. Eventually fixed with after market at Brakepoint & after serious dollars and much frustration. Apparently the handbrake is a real issue with Toyota 70 & 80 series. Why???
The Jimny is damn sure better value for money. At least it has sound deadening, coil suspension, comfy seats and a correct wheel track. I love the 70's but with those issues listed above, Toyota is seriously taking the piss at the price they ask.
I think the trooper is no more, its no longer on Toyotas site. Also why would you take the trooper over a Parado GXL which is 10k cheaper or spend about 3 or 4k more to get a VX with all the trimmings? Same brand, same reliability and I would assume the Parado is no less capable
The Troop Carrier is still on the Toyota site - it's just a bit hidden. Go here and you'll see: www.toyota.com.au/main/landcruiser-70/prices Thanks Matt
