Hello everyone, welcome back to the channel!
In this video, I will be carrying out a repair of the fabled stator magnets on the SV1000. This issue is found on most of the big Suzuki V-Twins however including the TL1000, SV 1000 and DL1000 - V STROM.
The fault with the magnets on the SV stator are widely documented and the fix is simply to re-glue them and apply JB Weld or similar to ensure that they can never move again!
It is not a difficult task but if you want to do it properly then removal of the stator from the crank is your best bet.
The tool that I used to remove the rotor from the crank can be found at the link below
ebay.us/yzJvAS
The Loctite that I used in the video can be found at the link below
ebay.us/AxxUAR
The JB Weld that I used for my repair can be found at the link below

An alternative that I mentioned is the Steel Stick Putty which can be found at the link below

The generator cover gasket can be found at the link below

For those that asked, a slave cylinder rebuild kit can be found at the link below, a video on this rebuild will be following very soon!

Good info, I hadn't thought about the position of the magnetic poles facing each other. That could have been a complete fiasco to diagnose later haha

Good video. :) But you missed one very crucial step when reinstalling the flywheel at 31:25. Many people probably missed it, but it was not fully seated in the nose of the crank before you started tightening the center bolt. If you just run the bolt in and torque it, you risk cracking the starter clutch and those are f***ing expensive. I suspect you DID it, but it's not shown in the video. ;) All you have to do to get it fully seated, is: 1. Remove the hollow axle on the starter idler gear, and remove the gear. It's the small gear with the short bushing on the outside of it. 2. Rotate the big ring gear behind the flywheel while pushing the flywheel in place. It will then slide the last 6-7mm in and be fully seated. 3. Reinstall the small idler gear, hollow axle and bushing. 4. Torque the bolt to 140nm. 5. Change the gasket and put the bike back together. No RTV allowed. :D I have been doing these SV flywheels on customer bikes for more than 4 years now - and i secure the magnets in basically the same way as you do. I just use JB Weld instead of the locktite product, but that's not important. It's very nice to see you do a video on the topic - people have been asking for it for a long time, and i never got around to filming the process myself. Good job.

Given how much this issue has been documented over the years its surprising that a recall was never issued. Thanks for all of the great videos you've made on the SV1000. I picked up the N version from a friend and it's been a pleasure to ride so far. With your videos I know I'll be able to keep her on the road for countless more rides. Cheers.

I find it amazing that Suzuki charge so much for a replacement rotor, when they must know they're only being sold because the originals were defective.

I found it hard to get the air bubbles out of the jb weld when working it in between the magnets. I ended up putting the jb weld in a small syringe and squeezing it in there. Makes the job a lot neater and easier. Great video

@@KevsShed I thought I'd follow up with my progress. I'm waiting for some more OEM parts and the puller tool to arrive, but I took a deeper dive in to Loctite compounds so I could avoid using JB Weld as the placeholder. I came across Loctite 648 as the solution. It too shares the surface adhesion qualities of the 609, but has a high temperature resistance, high vibration resistance, and high resistance to oil and other chemicals. It's actually described by Loctite for our use. It's good up to 356F (180c) which should be more than enough while allowing us to remove in the future if ever needed. Idk from experience if the JB Weld would be considered a bad option by any means, but I mainly looked for something which was more or less reversible if needed. I hope this helps if you ever run in to this again! Also, im in the process of also replacing the clutch basket with one from Werks (here in the US) which seems to offer an extremely long service life compare to OEM). I know you mentioned that was on the list in case you're still looking for parts. Cheers!

Or affects just the charging system, affect spark/ignition ( it should ) going nuts here. No codes on cluster indicator either .. thanks in advance Motox_cris

Hi Kev, New sub here, been enjoying your SV1000S and bike content, some excellent videos you have. I've just bought a 2004 SV1000S with 23k on the clock and it's in pretty sweet condition, however no paperwork or indication to say this particular job has been done. I expect not to have any receipts given it's more of a DIY job but I'm curious to know at which point in the bike's life it's worth checking this - any symptoms or particular noises to listen out for? I've not picked up the bike yet and I'm wondering if I should do this before even thinking about riding it properly? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated 🙏🏼 🙂

Great video I've followed it to do my magnets. Having an issue when fitting the clutch slave cylinder though. Tightened up the two bolts holding it (one longer than the other) to torque setting but when pressing the clutch the cylinder moves slightly on the RHS bolt. One of the bolts is 5 mm longer than the other, I've checked and it seems the RHS should be the longer one. Did you notice which why around they fit or if your cylinder moves? Cheers

@KevsShed
@KevsShed 2 года назад
Hey bud, thanks for the compliment! If the magnets have not shifted and are stuck fast then JB weld between them will sort them out and prevent them ever moving. If they have moved then they will need shifting back and JB welding back into place to stop them ever moving again. It's entirely up to you if you want to go to the effort of removing them and re-sticking them back in place. Either way, JB-weld them to future-proof the bike.
