Bought a 2018 Swift sport with the same engine. Fabolous car and magic engine and brakes. Have now also bought a 2019 vitara with that engine. Love both cars. 1.4 engine puts out 155-160 hp at dynos.

Owner of the 4WD mild hybrid here, 20000km and a year in. Plus points are, the driving experience. It's surprisingly nimble and fun especially in the winter. You can definely go sideways! And if you go longer journeys and keep it below 100km/h you can easily manage below 6L/100km. The interior feels like the weakest link, materials feel like they arent going to wear super well. But that is unfortunately true of most new cars today. While looking at second hand cars, i first thought the vitara had worn badly. But then i compared it to a lot of competitors, even upmarket. Cars are so weight focused now that materials are super thin, to save every ounce. And my vitara has so far worn better than our 2021 skoda superb. at similar mileage. But at less than half the price. It lies somewhere inbetween the Swift sport and the Jimny. Its good fun to drive, and still competent on forest roads. Thumbs up from me!

@pioneerz450 how about the noise on highway? I 've read that you get a lot of noise. How is it for example at 140km/h? What's your experience?

Called the 1.4 Boosterjet in the UK, no Turbo badge on the tailgate. Audio controls are also on the steering wheel. A really good economical and also very nippy SUV, mine has No rattles at all. The SZ5 has a very good spec with nice comfortable seats.

Just picked up a low km 2021 facelift. There is little to complain about, apart from maybe the halogen high beams. I will probably swap the lamps out for xenons in the near future. It's comfortable, has all the important safety features, is economical, and has decent performance and handling for a car in this class. No rattles in mine either, nor on the 3 others I test drove.

Great review! You nailed every aspect of the car. Actually, you made me buy it 😊 And guess what, i'm so happy i made that decision. Thank you so much. I can confirm 1.4 Turbo MT, is so great engine and very well defined transmission. Car is quick and sporty in town, but confident over bumps and cornering and relaxing at speedways. And at the top of everything, engine is not thirsty at all. Love it ❤

The brisk rate of acceleration comes down to the excellent little turbo and good auto gearbox. But the main thing is the ultra light weight of this car. It’s genuinely hundreds of kilos lighter than most competitors and that is obvious through the every part of the way it drives. Yes the plastics inside are a bit cheap feeling, but honestly nobody cares about that once you own and use a car daily, it’s more of a point of comparison when you are scrutinising multiple options. But the drive of this little car is actually phenomenal.

Well, Matt... the problems with the interior noise caused by the dashboard must be a design flaw in this single car you tested. The interior materials are cheap due to the low retail price (as I think). True. But the workmanship is good. Don't have these problems in my Vitara 1.4 AllGrip. Overall, you are absolutely right. Many thanks for your review. The engine is so small, isn't it?! But the turbocharging works perfectly and the Vitara is a crossover lightweight. You can feel it when you kick down the throttle after traffic light switches to green. :)

Glad someone found out this is a warm hatch just up high. I guess the AWD took to fun factor out of many review vehicles. You failed to mention that it ways much less than many hatches on the market, and that spicy Swift Sport engine yanking along that light body, just looks like the steering should have been made sharper. If for some sad reason I was forced to drive an SUV, my first choice would be this one.

I own a 2017 Vitara S with the 1.4 engine and it is very good. I also own a 2018 Swift but the 1litre sz5 version. That's equally good 0 to 60 and top speed very close to the 1.4 in fact its about 0.5 seconds quicker. Not noticeable. I've never got out the Swift and said oh that needs 30bhp more. So the Sport must be awesome.

So simple: FFF - Fuel For Fun! ;) But in the mix, you won't be disappointed. Around 7 litres is typical for a fairly offensive driving style like I have. But you can easily reach the 6l consumption figures if you drive with appropriate restraint.
@ericdenau2223

Its design is hard to nail. I have one and Vitaras are uncommon so people goes, what is that? The front is the best part, it osez masculinity and that is good on the road it keeps people in place, people will stay put and give way If I drive one of those marsmallow designed candycars people will not pay the same amount of respect. The sides of the car are not bad looking but in somehow from an side angel the car looks smaller than it actually is and I will think it is a kind of one size fits all thing, it will hardly upset anyone but neither give any kind of chills, the back is very anonymus, a purely functional clean design that in my mind suits this type of car very well.

I had my Vitara Turbo for about a year, absolutely loved the engine, so zippy, but mostly everything else was a miss for me unfortunately. The whole thing just feels so cheap, which isn't always a bad thing, but not when you're forking out $34k, a little overpriced in my opinion.

I was honestly shocked how rattly Mini's can get and they're made by BMW. People like the luxury feel. If it doesn't matter to us it's fine. Just let them like what they like. I'm not going to take offence if they criticise a car that I've bought because they value different things to me and that's OK. They're criticising the car, not me.
