you're such a good catmom! i couldn't finish this without crying because i lost an old man due to heart failure and he had so many meds. thankfully Sven isn't in the same condition
You are doing such a great job with Sven Your channel is so good and the content is enjoyable! There are some out there that just ask for funding and don't seem to really do anything to help their pets You walk the walk and talk the talk 😊❤
I love you & your 3 cats. I wondered why you focused so much on him. Now, I understand. He is your little invalid. Robbie & Louise seem fine. I thought you were being unfair to the other 2. I was so wrong. You love them all beyond 100%. I watch you every day. Your conversations & play with the others.
Had 2 cats, and about 5 years apart each of them developed hyperthyroidism, and it progressed to the point it couldn't be controlled by medication. End result each of them needed to undergo radiation therapy. Fortunately, in both cases it was successful, but it was hard being parted from them for the 6 weeks or so where they were undergoing the therapy. They then both went on to live to their 20s. I've always wondered if it wasn't something environmental or food-related, given how unusual it was for both of them (and just in case it wasn't clear they both lived with us at the same time) to develop hyperthyroidism. They were expensive cats for a pair of moggies, but it was worth it. Mind you, I can't imagine how expensive Sven is given his medicinal needs and vet visits.
Are you in the medical field? Nine medications? Poor Sven, hope it’s not for life. Hope vet is not over prescribing, it happens. Some humans on nine medications walk around like zombies?
It must be costing you a fortune in cat medicine, no animal should have to take that much medicine to survive. You are an awesome cat mom. I know what it's like giving your cat medicine. My cat used to run when he saw me coming with the syringe, it broke my heart cuz I knew how bad it tasted.
I had a cat with Asthma and scoliosis! She lived until she was 22 years old, because of regularly vet check ups and the right medication 💊 she was active most of her life, but slowed down when she was 19/20 last 18 months of her life...I gave her 3 baths a week! She would lay down on her side with her head on my arm like when you bathe a baby, then I'd massage her all over paying more attention to her back! She would walk better after her baths! Nearer the end she had more baths because she used puppy pads instead of cat litter...it made it easier for her! But unfortunately she would sometime sit in her wee, so she needed baths more bless her (i asked the vet if i should bathe her...he agreed and said if i was prepared to bathe her regularly it was really good to help pain control) i loved giving her baths! She didn't mind the blow drying either..
I thought my cat has a lot of meds for an asthmatic. She gets 2.5mg of pred in the morning, 3mls of theophylline at night, and 2 puffs of her 125mcg inhaler every 12hrs. I noticed your inhalers have a breath counter. I buy mine mostly from Canada, but when I buy them in the US in emergency situations (storms or customs issues) they have the breath counter
Wow I am surprised he is on apoquel AND atopica. Could you please share the vets reasoning behind this? Asking because I’ve been in a similar situation and would genuinely want to learn more
Hi Jenn, I just want to share with you how I manage to get my old man (cat) to willingly take his pills. There is this thing in the market called a pill pocket or pill wraps that come in a tub. However I find that it's really expensive and pill pockets actually get crushed and broken apart easily during shipping rendering it difficult to hide the pills in. So I used pieces of cat sticks from Vitakraft to slot and hide the pills in it.
I would probably start by baiting Sven to take it willingly by giving him fake teeny pieces as treats in random timing before increasing the globs in size. And for anyone else wondering, yes.. the red cat is the old man in. questions and he's coming to be 15 this July.
Wtf is going on? My mom gave me green tea and sugar crystals when I had covid. I told her that I'm gradually losing my vision and she went "Omg you so much complaining" 😕 So I'm predicting that in 13 videos from now; Sven is adopting a human.
I totally agree. My daughter had Asthma, she grew out of it in less than 8 months. My other daughter has an autoimmune disease, she controls it with healthy food. My son has Thyroid problems, he is beginning to manage it with healthy food and liver cleanses. While I am impressed with her trying to do the right things, and being so regimented, she certainly does not need to take the vet's word as gospel. That is entirely too many meds. Any one of those medications can cause seizures. What will she do when/if that happens?? Give him another prescription?! Good grief. Trust your own instincts and common sense.
@@TXfaith Exactly. People need to do their own research on these meds and realize that they come with many side effects. There are natural alternatives for many of these prescription medications that don't subject pets to negative side effects.
If you fed him a proper feline( obligate carnivore) diet, he would not have this problem. Cats need to only eat meat( raw) as that is what their digestive system and endocrine system was designed to run on. He is a metabolic mess and will only get worse suppressing his immune system and destroying his pancreas and renal functions with steroids, and over stimulating his heart with beta agonists like terbutoline. I have been a Respiratory Therapist for 30 years and have a cat sanctuary with over 50 cats who came to me with health issues. Putting them on a proper diet, which by the way, vets know nothing about because they push the prescription diets from big pharma and other companies, to get your business. Look at the money you are spending. They dont want you animals well because they would be out of business. I used to spend $10,000 a year on vet visits and meds, etc. Now, I rarely go to the vet. The only thing different is my cats eat meat and eggs. Uncooked. Its expensive, but cheaper than going to the vet and giving meds, and no more stressing out and harming the cats just to manage a disorder they wouldn't have if they ate what nature intended them to eat. No preservatives and carbs and additives. They get everything they need from meat!
I don't find him fat. I eat like Siberian wolf pack. I'm always low BMI. The health plan asks me to gain. (5'9" barefoot; 99 to 111 lbs fully clothed). Sven is perfect.
@@JennyTownsend-r5xhe is quite obese. So it’s because of the meds. I guess it’s fine then. Never seen a cat need this much meds though. Usually domestic no breed cats like him are usually healthier. I took care of 7 strays and they were all pretty healthy
This may sound cold, so first let me say, I admire your fortitude. It's clear you love your kitties, but.... You'd never catch me doing or spending so much on a pet. I loved all of my cats and they lived to about 20 (years, not cat years). I had them put down by my vet when they developed many issues. Only one of my 7 cats(I'm old) went at 14 just do to age and breed.
Is there a way to find any natural alternatives for any of these? The anti diarrhea ones for example look into S. Boulardii it’s a type of probiotic that’s helped previous rescues of mine. I wonder if supplements to help boost the immune system like Reiki mushrooms as opposed to immune suppressors like steroids? I understand it’s hard when your kitty is dealing with so many health issues but these meds can have other unintentional side effects down the road, there are no easy answers but hopefully those two are good starters 🙏
Meds can have side effects but so can "natural alternatives". Everything you put in your body is some form of chemical cocktail, meds are just ones engineered to minmax one specific thing, and rigorously tested to target that specific thing as opposed to having various other nutritional side effects to account for when taking the same amount of required chemicals in "natural" form.
The only difference between actual meds an natural alternative is that meds CAN be synthetic, but also that before releasing a med it takes at least 12 years of trials, and we know exactly what's in the med that's making what we want. The natural alternative are a cocktail of molecules and maybe it does something, but even if it does you can't be sure about what are the possible side effects, if you're unlucky and you use the natural alternative for the wrong problem it can kill you
Wow. Stop what? Having a pet that she loves? Stop giving him meds and let him suffer instead? Not all cats are lucky enough to have perfect health. Maybe she doesn't want a nice guy and babies. She has the right to have as many pets as she likes. Kudos to her for taking good care of her kitties! I have a cat who has seizures, and her monthly meds cost enough for a nice car payment. And you know what? It's totally worth it! She is a happy cat, and my hubby and I are happy owners. Don't be a troll.
