Do you think it's worth upgrading from two stacked PB-1000s to a single PB16 ultra? I had dual PB-1000s in the front, but after getting a wider TV stand I had to put them in the back of the living room, now they're stacked. I lack more power, even though stacking them in the back made them sound louder.

Thanks for the video. Is the bass on the PB Ultra jarring or easy to listen to? I am in the market for a new sub and it’s gonna be this or a REL Gibraltar G1 ... thanks for any input
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
The PB 16 Ultra is only jarring when it's supposed to be. A highly explosive movie is intended to be jarring, and it absolutely is with the PB 16 Ultra. Put on some smooth jazz and they are delightfully delicate and accurate. The content will shape the sound. Super easy to listen to. Very comfortable, I wouldn't have given it high praise otherwise.

Subwoofer 101 thanks for the feedback I have to be careful as I suffer with tinnitus. Watching RU-vid videos It is difficult to get a handle on how this thing sounds as it is so loud and powerful the mic usually starts clipping giving the impression of boomy, bloated and distorted mess of course this is due to recording limitations and I am sure that is not the case in real life . I live in the U.K. and nobody sells these in store. I don’t believe that the 45 day money back guarantee is applicable here either so have to go on recommendation from people such as yourself Anyway I really enjoy the videos and will more than likely pick a PB16 Ultra up sometime in the near future Cheers from the U.K. Danny

I have Post Concussion Syndrome, so I totally relate. Very tender ears. If you aren't planning on dual PB 16 Ultras, I would seriously consider dual PB-3000's instead of a *single* PB 16 Ultra. Not only will the overall sound be better, but I find duals more comfortable. It's counterintuitive, but every time I went back to a single, my ears suffered a little. No fatigue at all with dual ported subs. Especially after the Distance Hack from my bass hack series.

I’m going to get these for my home theater, how sturdy is the shipping crate they use? I’m planning on using 6 subs for my setup, 4 front and 2 rear. If you can’t feel it, then it’s not loud enough! My theater is part of a new home build, I can make a large dedicated space 20’ feet wide minimum, by 30’ + feet length, 12’ high ceilings.

I think there are certain sounds that make great tests of your subs as well as the rest of your system, it's probably due to the difficulty in reproducing the sound and also our familiarity with the sounds. One of my usual examples is something like a dumpster getting dropped, or a semi truck up close rumbling away. If you hear one of these sounds and you would swear there's a semi in your living room, or the trash guys are right outside, your system is pretty ef'ing good. I tripped to this after a couple of times I was watching some news report or something like that and in the background, there was a semi running and I actually wasn't sure if there was one right outside my house of if it was the video. I think it's something to do with the dynamics especially in the deep lows. Do you think that makes sense?

I don't understand the pressure issues you are experiencing, I would imagine a ported sub would actually create more pressure differential because it is amplifying the flow into and out of the box. Because the ported subs will have more flex with less 'tightness' I would assume the opposite would be true. I'm curious what is happen for you?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
I wanted to be a sealed subwoofer "convert", I always heard about their benefits. Some people just have a sensitivity to it. In contrast, I can listen to ported subs all day with no issues. If you were to measure the pressure inside of the box of a sealed sub, the pressure would decrease on the out-stroke, and increase on the in-stroke. There would be much less of this with a ported sub since there is a pressure relief through the port. What happens on the inside of the sub must have some impact on the outside of it. It was very unexpected, and unfortunate for me given the subject matter I cover. I wish I could explain it better, it's just a mild discomfort that is completely eliminated with ported subs. That said, I'm definitely not a fan of "sloppy" subs, and while sealed may be a touch tighter, the ported subs I like are FAR from sloppy.

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 лет назад
Mixing subs is a weird thing. To me, it seems like the bass response takes on the weaker subs' characteristics. I didn't really hear what the PB 16 Ultras were all about until I got the second one in. Truly. I tried mixing them with dual PB-2000's, pretty close to what you are talking about. Frankly, I turned off the single PB 16 Ultra and kept the dual PB-2000's going. Sounded better than trying to mix the three, or the single PB 16 Ultra alone. Crazy, but true. I later mixed the PB 16 Ultra with the VTF-15. Better than mixing with the 12" PB-2000's, but the bass still seemed compromised. A little softer than it should have been, as I would find out. When I replaced the VTF-15 with the second PB 16 Ultra, it was like, "ooooohhhhh, I totally get it now!!!" Prior to that, I was honestly a little underwhelmed with the PB 16 Ultra. Running single and trying to mix gave me a poor impression. Once I had just two PB 16 Ultras, the bass was as close to perfect as I've ever heard. Explosive when it's supposed to be, SOOOO clean, yet still gentle when called for. Most explosive sub I've heard so far, while still 100% comfortable to my overly tender ears. A kick to the chest without killing my ears. So to sum it up, I'd either get dual PB 16 Ultras and take the Klipsch out of the equation, or go with dual PB-3000's, and consider trading up within a year (factory direct if you want trade up). Without question in my mind, dual PB-3000's will sound better than a single PB 16 Ultra. All day. But dual PB 16 Ultras are what I consider to be the gold standard. Either way, I would avoid mixing subs if at all possible, even within the same brand. I've never been what I would consider "successful" when mixing subs. When going high end like this, no point in getting less than optimum bass. If you're inclined to support the channel you can follow my link in the video description, but for sure, do what's best for you. Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for watching!

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
I just let them play like normal, at normal levels. 2-4 weeks generally gets you to your "forever" sound. BUT, I will say that the 16 Ultras seemed to keep getting better for several months. My mind might be playing tricks on me, but every other SVS sub and speaker would be broken in after a month, but it seems like I had to keep backing the 16 Ultras down about a dB per month. I started at 14 and 10 dB, and at the end of 4-5 months I was at 18 and 14 dB (left sub gets more corner gain) with what seemed like the same output. Could be the massive voice coil, or just my mind tricking me. In contrast, I've only backed the PB-4000's down about 1-2 dB over the same time frame, and pretty much just after the first month. I'm at 14 and 11 dB, started at 13 and 10 dB.

I noticed you started out with a Hsu or had a Hsu? How are they compared to these or similar size subs.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
Yeah, the HSU was my first "real" subwoofer. Same league, slightly different approaches. My VTF-15 is the first version, I think the newer version probably benefits from the more powerful amp (350 vs 600). The PB-16 Ultra is certainly more tactile and powerful, at 1500 watts RMS. The VTF-15 lands between the PB-2000 and PB-12 Plus in terms of power and price. Anything on "The List" should be a good sub: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/ There's a difference in the shipping policy and warranty terms. HSU offers 7 years on the driver, 2 years on the amp, while SVS offers 5 years on both. You can buy an extended 5 year on the HSU amp. SVS has free shipping even if you send it back. HSU does not offer free shipping, which adds up for returns. Every HSU on the list is a variable port, while SVS offers that on their Plus and Ultra models. HSU and SVS are close competitors. Both are dramatic departures from most subwoofers on the market, providing true depth and power. Any sub on the list will be a decent value, or I wouldn't have it there. All on the list will hit 20 hertz with real authority, where most subs "rated" to 20 hertz will just be audible.

@sabitahmed2686

Good review. But cheap tire-R35 is quite an absurd analogy. If the room acoustics, seating positions are spot on and if it’s a dedicated theatre room then one Sub works just fine. Of course, adding another evens out the bass response. But one doesn’t need every single square feet of a theatre room to have same level of bass response. Just my 0.2
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
I don't do dual subs for more even response across different seats, though that is a benefit. I do it because the sound is more "correct", full, authoritative, and "complete", beyond what a graph will imply. With a single, the bass is "missing" (muted) in certain spots (which I call Swiss Cheese Bass), while the bass is more complete with matched duals. I think my analogy is spot on, I've lived with this subwoofer 7 months, 2 months as a single. Speaking from practical experience, it's much better with duals, and the PB-16 Ultra is not unique in that way. If you want the best out of any subwoofer, matched duals is important. The way it tightens up the bass very much reminded me of going from basic tires to good tires, and that was just on my pickup.

The depth and impact you would get from something like the PB-16 Ultra would be a new experience, unless you have some very unique Klipsch subs. These are subwoofers that have a much deeper presentation: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/ It's not so much about loudness, that's easy. True depth, low distortion, and strength of the bass are a departure from the norm. Dual PB-2000's might be satisfying enough to you, or you might get the bug to get the PB-16 Ultras. That kind of thing happens a lot, good bass is addictive!

I've run dual PB-4000's and PB-3000's in an RV, and RV parks are definitely a place where it's easy to get complaints. Haven't been ejected or jailed yet! I've toyed with the idea of PB-16 Ultras in there, but the PB-3000's are just far more practical and still pack an insane punch! Just need to use the volume control judiciously, but I would definitely run duals, I think a single makes the problem worse somehow. Duals aren't for more loudness, even though they can go louder. It's for more even bass, so you aren't trying to boost dead spots from a single subwoofer. Funny thing is, if you boost a dead spot in the bass, the subwoofer definitely gets louder, but because you are in a dead spot, YOU can't hear it, but your neighbors definitely can. Bass is a weird thing. Duals allow you to hear more bass, so you don't have to turn it up as much. It's easier to listen at lower volumes with dual subs, because you hear it all. Like I said, weird. Dual PB-2000's would probably scratch your itch just fine, and they respond well to my tips on apartments. Check out my apartment video for more on how to adjust the gain to make the bass "softer".

My priority was stereo music and a big screen tv, kef reference 3 speakers and 78 inch tv, this left no space available for a sub. My room size is 5x4 meters and i will place the sub on the side wall. I think i will use the sub for movies but would be a bonus if i could use with my kef speakers. Ported sub is not an option because they are a lot longer and look horrible on the side wall. Sb16 will performe a lot better than sb 13 for movies? Thanks.

@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
You can always go stacked. The SVS Ultra Sealed subs will do really well with both music and movies. A ported sub will have the advantage for movies, but they did a good job on the low end with the sealed Ultra subs. If you can't do 2 stacked SB-13 Ultras, then a SB16 Ultra would be the way to go. But I would strongly suggest duals. Dual SB13 Ultras would be undeniably better than a single SB16 Ultra. I've covered that topic in great detail. I know sometimes people are used to loud subwoofers that don't go very deep and that can be an adjustment too. But there are people who like to listen extra loud, and having the gain higher on the subs and lower on the AVR really helps.

What about duals in 1 cabinet? Was looking into Martin Logan 212
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
I would personally rather have the subs separated, but 2 in one cabinet is better than a single driver, single sub. If I ran dual driver subs, I'd still want two, but that is more spendy. I'm more inclined to recommend duals from this list: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/ My thoughts on Sealed vs Ported: www.subwoofer101.com/ported-vs-sealed/

2 of the svs 16 ultra or a jtr captivator 4000? Mostly music I love bass anyone have advice? I'm pretty new to all this. Pretty sure I'll just try the 45 day trial and see if that is what I'm looking for, but advice is always helpful.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
+LeoLiburon I don't know for sure. While I have heard dual driver subwoofers before, I haven't heard a "proper" dual driver subwoofer like the JTR. JTR has a good reputation, and it's a good subwoofer. I have stacked 2 PB 2000's, and it was a lot better than a single, but I did like them better when they were separated. But again, I haven't heard the JTR. I have a financial incentive to promote SVS, you can follow one of my links and I could earn a commission. I don't have a relationship with JTR, but I would be interested. They make a great subwoofer from what I understand. The SVS does come with a better amp warranty, 5 years. You also get the app and remote control, which are really useful touches. There is also no charge for shipping, even for returns. That's worth several hundred dollars, considering it's shipped on a pallet. The JTR goes deeper, into the single digit range, which is impressive. The difference in depth is in the infrasonic range. My hearing cuts out at 17 Hertz, so I don't know if I could tell the difference between 13 Hertz and 9 Hertz. Either option would be going nuclear, and I mean that in a good way. I do like the appearance of the PB 16 Ultra a little more. The JTR's Wife Acceptance Factor is not it's strong point, but it has some great wood work. It's a very large sub, it's a good idea to take some measurements. No matter what, you're looking at flagship subwoofers, and you should end up with incredible bass.

Congrats on the affiliate, and since you are now an affiliate, going to ask something that you might know or can ask. Is there any plans for a PC-16Ultra? SVS was born on cylinders, and they continue to produce them, not as much as they used to, but i hope they don't stop on the PC-13Ultra.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 лет назад
+Pabula I don't think there are plans for an Ultra 16 cylinder. Being an affiliate has its advantages. I have an idea what's coming, but no firm details. The PC 13 Ultra is a solid value, you save a lot of money over the box version, but you have to love the idea of a tall cylinder. I don't know of any plans to stop making it. I'll see if I can get any feedback on it.

Wouldn't adding a minidsp 2x4hd help with tuning this sub?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Yeah, and with more options. That said, it's much easier to learn the app rather than everything required to get a DSP 2x4 properly tuned. Simple mistakes can really set you back with the 2x4. To be 100% clear, I think the 2x4 is awesome and a GREAT way to go if you are willing to invest the time.

Subwoofer 101 just wanted to make sure to see what frequency dips u miss out on and fix on the minidsp software not sure if that's possible without any 3rd party system and would be great if the svs pb16 ultras had a usb port to integrate on its intelligent system svs sub manual customizable software and maybe include 8gb usb stick with the exe file to setup that software it would be nice if that was the case already I'd be able to upload to the subs all the frequencies it misses out on when you connect a mic to your system and test it. If you have a friend in high places in svs please ket them know this would be lucrative and conveniently eliminate the need of a minidsp completely thanks
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Sama.40shooter martin Here's the problem, you can't boost a null (dead spots, dip, node) if you're in a standing wave. It's a barrier to that frequency. The two best ways to get the dead spots back is to (most critically) run matching duals, and then vary the subwoofer distance value after room correction. See my bass hack series. You can set different presets on the PB 16 Ultra, which is VERY handy. The only limitation is the number of bands (3), for that you would need a 2x4. But a LOT can be accomplished on the app since the bands are assignable and the Q value is so variable.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Room EQ Wizard is a great solution to see what's going on. I think you really need to measure the sub with the main speakers since they interact and cause cancellations. A subwoofer only measurement solution would be incomplete in my opinion.

I’d be really interested in a comparison between the Pb 16 ultra and the psa v3601. Psa is cheaper and you get 2 18 inch woofers as opposed to one (not really 16 inch) driver in the svs. My assumption is the psa would destroy the Pb 16, but it’s huge. Any way u can compare them???
@hitechburg
@hitechburg 6 лет назад
Young man that is a comparison you can easily make. Take your 2 psa v3601s to an SVS dealer and listen to a pair of SVS PB16 Ultras. You'll be surprised at what you hear. Never assume anything do the research.

Hahah easier said then done. Only way to do it is order pairs of both and compare them in your own home. I don’t think anyone has done that yet though. No replacement for displacement is what I’ve been told so 2 18 inch woofer vs one 15.5ish woofers, the psa has more come surface area which “should” be better. I love svs subs. Just got a pb 4000 and i love it! If you compare the 2 let me know haha

@Subwoofer101

No problem! GOT is awesome! If you run your crossover at 90-100 hertz for the books and center, 120-150 hertz for the Satellites, you'll have no problems unless you're trying to fill a basketball court. Your subs will handle the heavy lifting and you'll be golden. Check out my AVR setup video to get a head start on the settings, it really makes a difference. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mfl_ttIrLVI.html Later down the road, you could upgrade the center to the Ultra Center and the books to the Prime Tower or Ultra Bookshelf. You have a 1 year trade up so long as you are US or Canada and order factory direct. The SVS speakers will come on a little strong at first, and they sweeten up after 2-4 weeks of listening. It's not a massive difference so you may not notice, but some do. The first time I heard them I thought they sounded great, but after 3 weeks they sounded even better. The sound just got a little sweeter.

You keep going on about duel? I have a single. Nobody complains. People don't come round my house and say. Oh why dont you have 2? I want to go and sit in your null where nobody actually sits. Having 2 pb16 ultras in a small living room is absolutely ridiculous. It looks ridiculous and its not the holy grail. Once dialed in one is absolutely fine for a single row. Thats 90% of us have in our living rooms. We don't have dedicated rows. Its a living room? I love the channel. I think your very educated and you give good advice and I love listening. But im not with you on duels. Its twoddle. I hate to think how many people have down graded to afford 2 when they didn't need too. I'm not interested in what they measure either. A graph isn't your ears. The only reason you would use 2 is for a wider listening area and in that case. If you want a wide listening area. You should buy 4? 4 is better than 2. Where does it end! Harmon tried and tested this with 4 subwoofers mid placed at each wall in a square room. So why dont you tell people to buy 4? Alot of people only have room for one. So what do they do? Not buy any? Buy 2 or none at all. Sorry. But 1 subwoofer is enough for a single row in a typical living room. I have no nulls at all in my row. Stop telling people to waste money or downgrade for no apparent reason. If you want to waste money then fine. But you don't need 2 or 4 unless you want good equal bass response in the entire room. My fish tank, tv unit and Teddy bear in the corner doesn't mind not having good bass response. And if duels are paramount to you and that's your advice. Then get people to buy the better one. Then add another at a later date when they can afford it. Not downgrade and buy 2 cheaper ones at the same time for temporary measure. Everybody's living room isn't your living room. Adding more could potentially make it worse if not set up correctly. Rant over.

I liked dual PB-2000's (originals) better than a **single** PB-16 Ultra. I stand by my advice to go with matched duals. 1,000,000% No question. It's constructive interference. I'm not guessing, it's physics. I've gone back and forth, from dual to single. I don't suggest more than 2, as it doesn't seem to increase explosiveness, but does help smoothness. I'd rather get 2 more powerful subs, rather than 4. I won't give anyone a hard time for running 8 subs, I'm just not going to suggest that it's necessary. There's no way I would've put 2 subs in the RV if I didn't consider it VITAL. Space is a premium in a motorhome. I would absolutely run dual PB-16 Ultras in the RV, but it's a size and weight issue. The difference isn't about the loudness, but the explosiveness. I'm glad you like everything else I have to say, but you're dismissing my most important advice, in my opinion.
@christopherlewis3615
@christopherlewis3615 3 года назад
@@Subwoofer101 I understand your point. When I started watching your channel I was using 8 inch drivers as subs. Not really subwoofers that the box suggested. They would struggle to reach below 35hz and even then it wasn't a meaningful output. I totally get where your coming from. Many people seem to think larger means louder. But its not the case. Once dialed in.. its impactful and good decent premium bass that isn't irritating or annoying. It sounds expensive. When I bought my svs it arrived on a pallet and partner could fit in the box! And she said this is way too much for our room. Again. She thought big... must mean loud and obnoxious. But I listened to your advice. People kept telling me why do you need something this big and loud? Why so many watts? But I wasn't buying it to be boomy and loud. Now its dialed in, the bass!!! Its just out of this world different to cheap subs. After running eq its massive size just blends and disappears in the room. Nobody can pin point it. Its just nice, controlled bass. Obviously it will shake the house when turned up too but its not over done. I totally get why you rave about the pb2000s and above. I get it. What im getting at is people going from a cheap nasty sub to a pb2000 and above will be more astounded than going from 1 svs sub too 2. Diminishing returns start to kick in. My point is.. instead of telling people to downgrade and get 2 and not the single 3000 for example. Tell them to buy the one they actually want. Then buy another at a later date. Buy the one that fits the bill and ticks the boxes in terms of size and output that is right for them. Yes 2 pb2000s will be better than one pb3000. But 2 pb3000s will be better than 2 pb2000s. So instead of buying an inferior subwoofer within the svs line just so you can afford 2. Why not buy the subwoofer you want. That you can afford at the time. Then buy another at a later date. I will eventually be buying another ultra when I can afford it. But from now until I can afford another... this single one pressurises my room brilliantly in the mean time and I look forward to getting my second. As opposed to being disappointed with the 2 I could of bought. And eventually when I get my second. 2 pb ultras will be better than 2 pb2000s and I have not wasted money in the mean time. I have chosen a subwoofer I want. To then add another in the future. Rather than rush to get 2. Hope you can understand where I'm coming from. Keep up the good work. I did not mean to sound like I was bashing your channel. I have listened and learned alot from you in my journey to decent bass within my room.

Egos, Men and Subwoofers. Its an endless game until you start designing this stuff. 5:24 meh no no no. storage power? but power is always there from the wall socket. Personal? no the voice coil has to move a massive air mass, paper cone, air, and current from the amplifier. its not personal its science.

@yaghiyahbrenner8902 7 лет назад
its a topic specific to power supply design discipline. taking 50 one liter bottles vs one 50 liter bottle make no difference from a volume point of view, just cause you see big capacitance doesn't make it a big a thing its just part of the design because of the power the amplifier outputs .. I guess describing things superficial is annoying to me. :)

I was trying to keep it simple, but I think this touches on the issue nicely: www.crutchfield.com/S-HZ9m6MCFrfy/learn/learningcenter/car/capacitors/faq.html It points out that power is stored and discharged quickly in capacitors, it's a buffer against sudden draws of power. I'd like to think I'm delivering reliable information. If the subs had poor capacitance (storage ability to buffer against sudden current draws) I'd have a heck of a time tripping breakers. I'm thrilled that I haven't had a breaker trip with 2 of these delivering pure madness.

Duals are room dependant. They are not for everybody in every situation.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 лет назад
Respectfully, I have to disagree. Enclosed rooms (anything inside of a building) create standing waves. Dual subs interlace the signal, much the same way the double slit experiment demonstrates. Check out what happens at 1:40 in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M4_0obIwQ_U.html It may not be a perfect analog for what dual subs are doing, but you get the idea of what's happening with the sound waves interlacing. You can't make one hand clap, nor can 1 bass driver do what 2 can, which is reduce the standing wave effect, reduce peaks and nulls, and allow you to hear the full bass spectrum. With one sub, whether you realize it or not, you will always be missing some bass, something I call Swiss Cheese Bass. I do think dual subs are for everybody in every situation, so long as quality bass is the desired outcome in an indoor environment. Outdoors, things are different. It can be challenging no doubt, with cost and space being the biggest hurtles, but I wouldn't set out to run a single subwoofer knowing what I know now. I've gone back to a single twice, and I have no desire to ever do it again. Here's my video on the importance of dual subs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aQz0VbueIEE.html
