In this video, I go over how to find out if your baby has swallowing problems, and what you can do to help them. My Levi had swallowing problems until he was about a year old, so we had to thicken his milk and food so it was easier and safer for him. Check this video out if your child or someone else's child that you know of has swallowing problems or dysphagia.
Supplies and other instructions that I talk about in this video:
USDA Organic Gelmix Infant Thickener for Breast Milk and Formula, 4.4oz Jar www.amazon.com/dp/B0711YMPBB/...
Thick-it Original, 36-oz www.amazon.com/dp/B0011TUM3E/...
SimplyThick Easy Mix 200 Count of 6g Individual Packet Gel Thickener | for Dysphagia & Swallowing Difficulties | Add One Packet for Every 4oz of Liquid | Creates A Mildly Thick (Nectar) Consistency www.amazon.com/dp/B07934WLC2/...
SimplyThick Easy Mix 302 Serving Gel Thickener | for Dysphagia & Swallowing Difficulties | Won't Alter The Taste of Liquid | Easy to Prepare | Large 55 Fl Oz Bottle with Pump www.amazon.com/dp/B07934C3RY/...
Flow test:
1. Get a stopwatch and a 10 mL syringe. Remove the plunger from the syringe.
2. Cover the bottom of the syringe with your finger, making a seal.
3. Fill the syringe up to the 10 mL line with fluid.
4. Remove your finger from the bottom end at the same time as starting the stopwatch.
5. At 10 seconds, replace your finger over the bottom, stopping the liquid flowing.
Thin: All liquid has flowed through syringe.
Slightly thick: There is between 1 mL-4mL remaining. (Half nectar)
Mildly thick: There is between 4mL-8mL remaining. (Nectar)
Moderately thick: There is more than 0 mL remaining, but some liquid still flows through.(Honey)
Extremely thick: If no liquid flows. (Pudding)

I thought thickit couldnt be used before a year old? We are using gelmix as thats whats recommended for our 3 month old with down syndrome. Are ANY of these covered by insurance? The gelmix is expensive!!!

Hey! I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner! If you are feeding your son milk and you need it to honey thick than you will need to put in 10 teaspoons for 8 oz. On the back of the thick it container the dosage chart is per 4 fl oz. so all you gotta do is double the amount it says. Hope that is helpful for you!

Have you talked to your babies pediatrician? They should give you a referral to a speech therapist to help your baby with any feeding struggles!

Hi there. We’re currently going through all these frustrations. My daughter was born two months ago and we’re still in the hospital. A few questions... How much time did you give your son on the volume before you increased by an extra 5ml? We had been doing this (on non-thickened milk but she continues to be inconsistent) Did Gelmix continue to thicken more and more the longer it sat? What nipple did you use once you started to thicken? We’re using the Dr. Browns too but should we increase the nipple? I noticed you may be using a one way compression valve. Is that because of the cleft palette? We’ve also tried this (again non-thickened). She did well for a while and then began to get overwhelmed and slowly stopped taking the bottle. How much of a break did you give your son when he needed it? While you were slowly increasing, before you had success, was your son on a G-tube? You said months and months but exactly how long did it take to get him to be successful and take the large volume? Did you find any other resources out there that may help? Facebook groups, support groups, etc? We’re working with a speech therapist and the doctors of course, as we’re still in the hospital. I’ll be asking them all these questions but thought I’d ask your experience. Thanks for sharing and helping!

Hello! I am so sorry I am just now seeing this and finally getting back to you about all your questions. Was your daughter born with a cleft lip and/or palate? I am glad to help in any way I can and I hope I can answer your questions. My son, Levi, started feeding therapy on a weekly basis when he was about a month old and our speech therapist had us start thickened liquid immediately and about every week or two we would increase 5 mls as long as he was taking the feeds ok and he wasn't showing signs of struggling too much or getting too tired. Yes, Gelmix continues to thicken the longer it sits. With nectar thick liquid, we started with a size 4 nipple until he started getting comfortable enough that he wanted the liquid to come out faster and then we actually started using a wide cut nipple. Yes, we've had a lot of success with the Dr. Brown's specialty feeding system bottles with the blue valve. Here is a video I made about the bottles if you don't already know much about them. Yes, the blue valve was for his cleft palate and has helped him so much! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aMGirZHVJ_A.html I would watch very carefully for Levi's signs when he got too tired and struggling. I noticed red splotches on his face and his eyes would water if he got too tired. Sometimes he would need just a few minutes to take a breather in between drinking. And other times he could only handle a little bit and then we would try again at his next feed. He had to be on consistent feeds every 3 hours to keep his weight up. To answer another one of your questions, yes, he was on a g-tube. So whatever milk he didn't finish in the bottle we would put the rest of the amount (not thickened) through his g-tube. He had to be taking a specific amount every 3 hours. Does your daughter have a g-tube? It took Levi about 9-10 months before he could take his full amount of milk in his bottle. And by then he was still on thickened liquid, but only to half nectar. Throughout those months, we slowly decreased nipple sizes and thickness. And then weaned him off completely until he no longer needed thickened liquid. There are many cleft support groups that I am a part of if that's what you're looking for! Let me know and I will send you all the ones I'm on. I hope this was helpful to you in some way! Let me know if you have any other questions and I will do my best to help out! I know how hard and stressful and lonely it is to take care of a child with problems. Good luck to you!
