Got the same rifle and scope in 300bo. With my handloads its one of if not my most accurate rifles. It just stacks rounds at 100, slaps 10in plates out to 300. Really light fun rifle.
The future of 7.62 x 39 is likely going to be in hunting rifles. Russia imported ammunition now banned was 75% of the market. Several other 'eastern bloc'(?) countries have stepped up production as have American manufacturers but costs have increased significantly over normal inflationary affects due to Russian ban. Good build choice for the medium range capable cartridge.
If you already have a large supply of Russian ammo this makes sense. But if you are relying on store bought ammo to feed this gun, you might as well just get a .300 blackout version because the ammo is just as expensive and it takes normal AR15 magazines.
Ruger American is a solid bolt gun, very nice brother. I love my Tikka too, with the right simple configuration of a bolt gun it is a very apt multi-role/ purpose system.
Nice video! Same rifle, same optic. The AR height optic mount gives a chin weld. Thanks for the lead on the low mount. Please take a look at the Jtac Industries' elf owl chasis and ask him to make one for this rifle!
I have this same rifle but in 6.5 Grendel setup with a primary arms 4-14x ffp with the acss hud dmr reticle. Very lightweight handy rifle and very accurate plus it’s super quiet with my suppressor. I also have a couple ar15’s in 6.5 Grendel so already had plenty of mags. But I’m kinda digging the ruger over my ar’s mostly because it’s way quieter when suppressed, gets 150-200fps faster velocity with its 16” barrel vs my 18” ar barrel plus I’d say it’s slightly more accurate
I’ve been thinking about building something similar for fun and for my kids first deer rifle. Something light and handy, less recoil than .308, LPVO, .30 cal suppressor compatible. Leaning towards .300BLK just because subsonic ammo is more common but I’d hunt with supers. Don’t need supreme accuracy as we don’t have many shots past 150 yards where I hunt.
Very funny timing. Just a week or so ago I dug out a rifle that I put together more than 20 years ago, and have hardly used since. It’s basically the grandfather of your rifle. It’s an Interarms branded, short action, Mark X rifle in 7.62x39. (Meaning it was made by Zastava in Yugoslavia when it was still Yugoslavia.) It’s in what I think is a Bell & Carlson fiberglass (yes, not plastic) stock, with a factory camo paint job. I mounted one of the old Burris Mini 6X scopes on it, and it’s a really handy package. Just at 7-1/4 lbs. No threaded barrel, an internal 5 round magazine, no picatinny rail, but it has a very crisp single stage trigger that’s adjusted to be just an ounce or two lighter than three pounds. While my central NC AO does have some distance shots capable, for practical work or hunting this rifle is also very happy at distances of about 300m and in. Mostly less than 200 yards. It’s a very nice package, and I’m glad to see more companies offering small bolt guns in short actions. The 7.62x39 is ideal in this type of rifle. Enjoy!
This has gotten me motivated to get a RAR in 7.62x39 to convert it to run AK mags with drill and tap irons on it. Since i have over 70 thirty round Magpul magazines 😂
I have a 5.56 American Ranch and I’m very happy with it. The Occam mag well and ADM mount are awesome upgrades for the rifle too. PPU has some ~$0.80-$0.85 subsonic 7.62. I’ll check out Defiant subs.
Your Deer in SE. USA run small. When I was over the Road from Arkansas South I was amazed how much smaller your feet are than up North,so that 30/30 short 7.62x39 mm more than adequate for task other than hogs and Gators that's superior to 5.56.
Have one of these set up in 5.56 with ar mags from a couple years ago. Has bipod and J comp on the front. Did have a Vortex 1x6x28 but switch to an illuminated reticle Riton scope. Weird thing was I had to put compensator on for sure because every time I shot without one, I could see the end of the barrel vibrating.

What shim arrangement did you find works the best for pmags? I have the firecastle customs 3d printed ak magwell, and though I don't think it will break on me, if it did I would want to get this occam magwell since it is metal.
As we have spoken about during assembling a near identical set up, one thing that I have done differently is apply a generous lapping to the bolt with compound. I am also looking at doing a small amount of bedding to the furniture interface.
