Wow that was cool. I had a Cox Airplane, String Controlled my dad bought for my birthday and helped me fly, I finally got the hang of it but got so dam dizzy going in circles that I flew it straight into a big tree, that is also when I discovered epoxy glue. Seeing the pink fuel and glow plug connector brought back all the memories, so much I had forgotten. Thanks a ton Karl. Miss you dad.
We had quite a few cox cars back in the day. We had an orange metal flake buggy that was fixed with an aluminum plate on the bottom because the plastic was broke. My favorite was a Dan Gurney eagle Indy car. We also had a Baja racer that was wedge shaped and a propeller driven car called a Shrike. All got used, abused, fixed with duct tape and broken again. Sadly they are all gone, so I imagine they are hard to find in good condition. Thanks for letting us come along with you to the swap meet.
Swap meets are the best, like you said it is where all of us old collectors and junkers meet up and catch up. My daughters went to their first on last weekend and they thought is was cool, however it my first sense covid too, so I was stoked and did score a few gems. Welp keep it up, and always good to see us fellow car guys keeping the tradition alive ! Cheers from Texas !
Mr. Japhands, you know how to work metal, that's for sure, but your strongest attribute is that you're SO frickin' charming. It's always a pleasure to watch your entertaining AND instructive channel. Thanks.
I love swap meets. On my 53 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup I'm going with electric P/S (EPAS) and electric A/C (Rencool from down under) to keep the engine bay clean. I also have a remote condenser. I'm using original column and steering box. No brackets, A/C and P/S belts or hoses in the engine compartments. Just an alternator, dry sump belt and blower belt. Thank you for your time.
Great video....I had a cox tether car...a vw pickup when I was a kid...think they called it a prowling pick up or something like that. There is no mistaking the smell of that cox fuel!! It was great to see all that cox stuff. I probably would of never thought about it again unless I saw this!
Karl thanks for the video, it was a good time to follow you around at the meet. I use to go to swap meets and car shows for the cars but after decades of attending I went for the people! When you mentioned Bill Hines, it reminded me that the people that suffer this addiction, crosses all generations. I also find it interesting that some are drawn back to the early Rods and Customs. There is something about that era, that style that is pleasing. That’s for sharing your time and talent.
Awesome. Always good to see a new video. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Fab on. Weld on. Keep making. God bless.
Lol! I had one of those cox buggies when I was a kid. That one you got was a bit older. Mine was from the early 70s. You would start it. Then set the steering to strait or whatever. Then let it go. Full throttle is all you had! Then in the early 80`s my parents got me a remote control version. Just steering. No throttle control. So you would start it. Then set it down running wide open. Then try to steer it around! It was crazy. But super fun! 🙂
It's the best feeling to walk away after a little haggle with a deal that Mark's both parties happy , I'm sure your gonna get to meet a few more people that watch the channel at the next meet .. now I'm disappointed you didn't show the clutch for a fiver lol .. glad you had a great time and that's an awesome result getting up close to the 39 coupe so you can get a template. Great video karl
I know this is a car channel but as much as I love old cars, seeing people with old BMX bikes is really starting to bring my childhood of riding bikes. The PK Ripper at 12:19 in that garage was cool.
Looks like an awesome time, my son and I went to a car show in Roseburg Or. Where were from on the 19th. Got some juices flowing we had a great time, car show and swap meets are definitely in the future. Hopefully this year will be real awesome..👌
That was fun to follow along with - Thanks. A Deli Owner I once knew had a sign behind his cash register "Prices may vary due to customer attitude" And it's so true. Stay safe and well :)
Awesome journey Karl. I LOVE swap meets! I still have stuff that I bought at the Cloverdale swap meet from 30 years ago that I got because it was cheap 😆
dude, nothing like doing a road trip !! Especially going to a flea market or swap meet..love them.. im a 40 minute drive, from Mid Ohio...thanks for sharing.. .... Black Art Forge..
If both parties walk away from a deal feeling like they won, it was a good deal. If I pay 20 for a 15 dollar part, but I feel I got a good deal. That's fine.
Karl glad you had a great time and found some parts you can use.The head light buckets and lenses are very nice.My bother and I had a couple of Cox car’s when where younger we got for xmas in the sixties. Swap meets are fun, great buys and you never know what you might find for a good price. Thanks again for sharing Karl.☺️☺️☺️👍👍👍👍✌️✌️
Swap meets are one of my favorite things. Making friends and connecting. I go in with the idea of let's see if I can find something that I don't need but is cool 😎 👍
Sometimes the best part of a swap meet is meeting the people. Many of these sellers go to other big meets and I would rather make a friend by paying a fair price and then maybe get a deal from that guy at the next swap. Plus the education value of who sells what parts can be very valuable for future builds. Great tips and fun video.
Awesome video man..cool stuff..cool people..you can't beat it.looks like the snowstorm i drove through to get my daughter last weekend in Edmonton lol..🤔can't wait to see the zephyr progress..or the buick.lookin good 👍
Morning Karl, your buddy is a nut!! But hey, you have to have fun!! I had one of those "COX" dune buggies when I was a kid, I'm aging myself here, don't remember if I got the buggy for Christmas or my birthday..We used to do swap meets at the fair grounds near Detroit, this was before eBay....Be safe!! God Bless!!
Awesome Karl. I love the swap meets and flea markets. Make your way out to Ontario some day and come check out some of ours ... Always a ton of great stuff !!!
I had one of those , but it was in Baja Bug version. I think I may have been about 6 or 7 years old, and I remember that it just had some click settings for the steering, so only went straight, or in varying circles. I don’t think it was too reliable, as it got pulled apart and never went back together. What a blast from the past.
My uncle used to send me to the checkout at the local recycling centre with a handful of coins when he wanted to buy something, because when they see a kid starting to count out coins they always say "yeah that will do, all good". Fond memories
Was awesome to see you at that swap meet, next time hope to get to chat a bit. Thanks for the bit with my truck (the C50) on the Friday night! Swap meet season is great.
Lovely episode great swap meet great video Carl, looking forward to see the rusty gold or new gold that you found at meet buddy, loved the video. Love and warm regards from India 🙏🙏
That "choke lever" was manufactured by Wilcox-Crittenden of Middletown CT. Out of business now, but a big name in marine manufacturing back in the day. The CW as shown was their trademark. Nice find.
Glad you enjoyed the swap meet in our fine city. The one in may is always bigger and I don't know when it all started but I remember going as a young lad, always a popular gig. Hope you make it out for the next one, love your channel. Dune buggy was the buy of the weekend. Stevo J
I had one of those gas dune buggy’s when I was a kid. Made by Cox. Played with it for a couple weeks and, like everything else I had, I took it apart to see if I could make it faster! Those are not the original tires.
That was a very cool swap meet. You are spot on about your philosophy on how to deal and act when at a swap meet 😎 . That cox dune buggy was a blast from the past. Bill Hines he is my hero ,the man was the master of Lead and chopping tops, when he passed the craft lost one of Best !!!
Manx buggies are the 💣! My 1st boss as a wanna be body man had one. I was 14 and got to drive it in our homecoming parade. Took Miss southwest Iowa pork Queen on a trip around our town square. That really was her title!.. then one of my closest friends ended up owning it....whenever I came home to visit we would terrorize the countryside one road ditch at a time... that thing would go anywhere! Great memories 👌 ❤....
Maybe you could put the booster on the inboard side of the Cadillac firewall and just have the master out on the firewall. Clean look i did this with my coe works great! Saves alot of room!
The key swap meets is you have to be there open to close. Early to get the stuff that would otherwise sell fast and late to get the deals. Covid has been a real bummer for swap meets and all. I'm excited for this season!
I was looking forward to the swap meet video! I love the swap meets, as you said, looking for inspiration, “hey, i could use this!” Manitoba hasnt had any swap meets for two years,so im excited for this year. Usually i dont dicker,if i want it i pay up. I make an offer im willing to pay if price is high. Got a nice set of trim rings off a set of wheels, made an offer and he was good. We were both happy i think. Lol, a fresh crop of snow! That’s what i woke up to.
Interesting episode JH's, . I'm from UK. Some time ago ( before you were born) I served in the British army. We went to Alberta, (think it is spelt 'Batus' near Edmonton ) training area. What a cool place. Me and a few friends drove to Medicine hat, and 'had a few beers' with the local's. Beautiful Country. I digress, ....more of this please, stay safe buddy.
Check out Mittler Brothers (tool company) they now make a hydraulic coil over set up (ideas how to do your Zephyr) keep the vids coming as I have a 37 Zephyr coming into my shop a stock coupe. To lower old school style and some engine compartment & trunk area sheet metal clean up for a mild custom treatment.
Incredible spirt! You might want to think about hitting Hershey and Carlisle swap meets in PA. HUGE! Would make a great video. Had the Cox dune buggy as a kid and wish my mom didn't give it away when I went off to college. She also gave away my Honda Z-50 minibike (70's gold metal flake) at the same time. A-nother great video! Keep moving forward.
I was watching your vid and you mentioned using a small booster for your brakes cuz you wanted to clean up the firewall. I built a setup on a ´52 Chevy where I put a dual piston with a mini brake booster UNDER the dash (inside the cockpit sitting transversely.) This way the entire firewall was completely smooth, no wire harness, no brake booster nada. A completely clean firewall. If you wanna get ideas how to do something like that just get in touch with me.
Bought my 39 chevy at a swap meet 4 day meet watched price drop couple hundred a day last day looked the owner up made an offer he counter offered we met middle shook hands on deal. He was older realized he wasnt up for another project I was young looking for project but treated him with respect and he could tell I was eager for truck but still was willing to give a bit. That was 25 years ago.
