Swarm to Hive Part 4: Gary's Bees

In this video we are installing the swarm that we caught near John's farm at his friend, Gary's, house. This swarm is going into a new hive box that we built earlier this Spring and had painted with scenes from John's farm. We'll keep the bees up here on the mountain for a couple of weeks before moving them to their new home on John's farm. This was a really big swarm with lots of bees, lots of brood and lots of resources.

The main reason I chose to add the peaked roof was because it will keep water off the sides of the hive which should help them to last much longer

That is a bunch of bees. Seems like one of the largest swarms that you have caught.

I think you're right. This is probably the largest swarm that we've ever caught. They are bringing in pollen like crazy.

I am trying to get 4 insulated hive finished, mine have the peaked roof design. I put up 10 swarm traps this year and have caught 4 swarms so far. Building the insulated hives is not for the faint of heart be no means.

We like the look of the peaked roof, but the flat roof works fine where we are. We don't have to worry about heavy snow-load here. We found the insulated hive relatively easy to build, but we had to label ALL the pieces and follow the instructions pretty much step-by-step. We have several playlists of our build videos showing building the swarm boxes, the 14-frame hives, the 19-frame hives, the insulated hives and the frames. We actually filmed building these last 2 hives but haven't decided if we're going to put together another build video or not. We may work on that later this summer while the bees are making honey and there's nothing for the beekeepers to do. Thanks for watching!!

@@randsbees From my understanding the peaked roof is to help keep the hive cooler in the summer. I watched your series on building the insulated hives, it was pretty good. When I painted the hives I had a roller that fit right inside the holes which made them easy to paint. Also i added the screen over the vent holes on the outside because it seems to me leaving the holes would be an ideal place for mud dabber to block off. I used 2x4 lumber for the top and just cut a rabbet in them instead of the 1x4 with the strips. To cover the plywood top I am using metal used on buildings and I bent it so it wraps the lower edge so the metal has to be slid on from one end. The first one I built I used the wrong plywood, learned that from your video. Thanks. I turned it upside down and placed a space heater under it with one end propped up a bit and ran it for 24 hours to cook the formaldehyde glue, the thermometer was reading an average of 160 degrees so I am pretty confident it will be ok to use now.
