I lost my sole bee hive during g a wind storm this spring. So I saw your swarm trap video and I made 3. That's what one 4 by 8 of plywood would get me. I was slow at getting them out though. One day I entered my garage to find a small number of bees on one of the traps ,while still in the garage. So I sat it just outside the garage door. I then hung a second one on a tree bout a 100 yards away. I didnt USe the 3rd. It took a couple weeks but the one on the tree is now inhabited and the one on the patio which had lookers now has permanent residents. Thanks for the video. Great trap. Greg Stephen's

I caught my first swarm of the year in one of these on Mother’s day 2018, in TN. They’ve been swarming here since early April, but the weather has been crazy. This was my first capture this year; full box of bees too!! Thanks for the video!! I watched it last year and built 10 traps over the winter. I didn’t add the vent hole in the bottom or the feeder hole on top because I check my traps often and put them in a hive as soon as I catch them. Great design!! Thank you!!!

If you catch swarms and make splits as part of your hive management you will never need to buy bees. However, buying a quality queen to improve the genetics and replacing poorly performing ones from time to time goes a long way toward success. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Mr Bee Catcher I copied your design exactly and made 6 boxes flashing lid and all. The total price per was about $40.00 ea and that includes a nail gun. I put the boxes out less than 1 week ago and my son called me this afternoon and said we have bees in one of the boxes. Also we put one at a friends house and he told us that bees have been checking it out. He didn't think that they have excepted it yet. We live in NYS and bees are swarming now. Seen several pics of swarms from locals. So when I told everyone what Iwas going to do with your direction they laughed. Guess who's laughing now. You design is a winner and I will spread the word to look at your video. Thanks again John

Keep the one you got the swarm in. Hang your trap again. Not sure where you live, but swarm season should begin soon hear in Northeast Ohio.
@alisonevans4474
@alisonevans4474 7 лет назад
We weren't sure how to proceed with the new swarm. I gave it to a friend (from whom I got the original "mother" swarm that all 3 of my colonies are from!) We decided she should take home the whole box so as not to disturb them, set it on top of the hive where they'll reside and open the entrance. After 5 - 7 days she'll move the frames into their permanent home. We've been having a very cold and wet spring here in Oregon, so the bees haven't had much opportunity to forage. She will start feeding them today just by funneling some sugar into the entrance. Do you have any other suggestions? Oh - we built two identical boxes and have already hung the second one in the same successful location. I also use Swarm Commander (smells nice)!
@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 7 лет назад
You have most of it correct except for a couple of details. You should move the trap about two miles. Then move them out of the trap ASAP. They can make a lot of crazy comb in just a few days. That will make more work in putting them into a proper hive body. At this time of year they are not likely to feed on dry sugar. If you move them now you can feed them syrup instead. If your friend has a frame of brood from another hive, put it in with the swarm when you transfer to the new hive body. That will make it less likely that they will leave, and also give than a boost. Good luck.

@alisonevans4474 7 лет назад
Thanks for all your excellent advice! I will tell my friend to hive those bees as soon as possible, weather permitting! And by the way, the scout bees are already checking out the second box we hung!

Thanks for the kind reply. I hope you are successful in catching swarms in your traps. I really believe that catching swarms is one of the best ways to have a (low cost)sustainable apiary. I have done this for 5 years, even with my losses. Beekeeping can be a real money pit if you keep buying packaged bees. I know friends that put out hundreds of $ each year to buy replacement bees. Not for me! Sometimes you get a great queen. Enen if you don't, you can buy a good quality queen for $35 or less and have a good low cost hive. We are still waiting for swarm season to begin soon here in NE Ohio. Can't wait!

I make and use a box a lot like that, I use a French cleat to hang mine from trees. I put one frame of old drawn comb frame and the other frames may be a combination of plastic foundation and foundationless frames. I also put a few drops of LGO, have very good luck with them sometimes catching 3 swarms on the same tree in a year. Learn the hard way not to leave them to long in the box, they will draw foundation all the way to the bottom of the box.

Follow up. Touched base with you last year, I had built six boxes and we caught 3 swarms. We had hugh swarms in and hanging off the box and they also started to build comb outside the box on the bottom but they left. We set the boxes out last year about this time. So this year we build 6 more but we increased the box size from a 5 frame to 7 frame to try not to loose those big swarms. I live south of Albany NY about an hour. This year we set the boxes out in the middle of May. Don’t know what the bees do in your area but here they will start to check out the box with a few bees some almost the same day you put the box out some areas not for Some weeks. Then they will come with more maybe 50 then even more this could take some weeks. They keep checking it out. Here we put the boxes in general on a hedge row facing a field and south east to south on a large tree oat, cottonwood, maple about 10 feet up. Every week we freshen up with lemon grass oil. So we have 12 boxes out and here right now bees are swarming heavy. We have bees checking out 6 boxes light to heavy. We don’t foul with the box until we see pollen going in. The new seven frame boxes have bees looking at them. I am getting long winded but thought some may be interested. Thanks Bee Catcher these boxes are the real deal woul highly recommend to any one.

Thank you for the great response. Sounds like you are doing great. Something is strange here in NE Ohio. Only one swarm from one of my hives, and it left. None of my beekeeping friends are getting swarms either. It seems strange because last year I saw 25 of them. If you get a swarm that stays on the outside of the box for a few hours sweep them into a regular deep hive body. Don't wait. For some reason they have decided the trap does not suit them and they won't go in. Making a larger box is a good idea. I have made some larger boxes also. I think the ones I showed in the video may be too small for very large swarms. It is about 38 L. I have increased to 50L. No results here yet. Thank you again for your response. I really enjoyed hearing about your experience and success with the traps. Good luck catching more swarms.

Those 2" an 3" knockouts do fit tight. I had to sand the inside of the holes a little to make them fit. For the vent holes near the top on the ends I used white plastic insulation plugs that fit nicely into a 1" hole. I then drill a few(about 8) 7/64 holes in the plugs for ventilation. No need for screen doing it that way. What you did will work fine if you sand the holes out a little. Good luck.

Thanks bud , and your swarm capture vids were very good . I made 6 boxes similar to yours , going to try this spring. I'm in Northeast PA , zone 6a Fyi: I ended black taping the razor out of a utility knife to the side of the hole saw , and VERY carefully widened the hole just a bit. Takes just a few passes and you get a snug fit with the knock outs . I was able to fine tune the holes pretty easy .

No swarms in NE Ohio. Not sure where swarms would come from since bee losses in this area were very high. I lost more hives in April than I did all winter. Last year on this date there were at least ten swarms that we witnessed nearby. Hope it starts soon. I love swarm season. Keep the swarm traps out and keep an eye on them.

For the two vents on the sides I bought 2" pvc knockouts ...I used a 2" holesaw , stapled all the screens on . wada you know , the knockouts won't go in ! Did you use a larger hole saw to cut the holes ? Since I have an interference fit , i'm gona have to stick all these in my mill now and enlarge the hole about 1/32 . So FYI to anyone making one of these , drill a test cut with the hole saw, take the test hole to Lowes/HomeDepo and make sure the knockouts will fit ...otherwise you'll have a problem like me . Thanks for posting the video . Fyi: I ended black taping the razor out of a utility knife to the side of the hole saw , and VERY carefully widened the hole just a bit. Takes just a few passes and you get a snug fit with the knock outs .

@Nepenthe6
@Nepenthe6 4 года назад
Regarding entrance, why did you choose the two holes side by side? Ive used 1 hole @ 1.25 inch on my traps. The research shows the type of entrance doesn’t matter as long as it equals about 2 square inches. I just built 42 traps based on this 5 frame design for the spring. Mine are 43 liters.
@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 4 года назад
You are technically correct about the research. The 1.25 hole is closer to 2 sq inches than two 1" holes. My son and I started out with two holes and have continued with that arrangement because we have had such phenomenal success catching swarms with it. The bees just seem to like the two hole arrangement. Keep in mind that wild hive entrances in trees are not perfectly round. If you are having good success with one large hole just continue that way. I suggest you use a piece of 1/2" hardware cloth behind the entrance hole to prevent birds or mice from moving in. Thank you for your comment. And good luck with the next swarm season.

@beecatcher6653 6 лет назад
+Sherwood Drumheller Thanks for your comment. If you look closely at the video where I tilt the trap backwards, you can see that the bottom of the box is supported on each side by short 2 x 2 pieces of wood stapled to the bottom. They just function as legs to allow for ventilation thru the bottom with the plug removed. Legs would be needed only when the box is setting on a flat surface. I hope you have great success in the next swarm season. These traps are well worth the effort to build. I hope that answers your question.

+Kiters Refuge Thank you for your interest. I do not make the traps to sell. My hope with the video is that bee keepers will either build the traps themselves or have a friend help. Construction is simple. Lemon grass oil can be ordered from Amazon in small quantities. You only need 1 or 2 ounces for the whole swarm season. Or you can order one of many swarm lures available. Actually that is a great question. I don't have any crops near me that are sprayed. Our honey is mostly from wild flowers. Your question is tough for me to answer because I would not like my hives to be near crops that were spayed with pesticides. I would trap bees in a location like that and move them to a healthier permanent location. I hope someone else can give you a better answer. Thanks for the great question!

Have you played around with putting 5 more frames in the bottom? Or do they prefer the empty space? Lastly, what other entrance holes have you tried before using this "double barrel" style opening?
@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 7 лет назад
+Hansonberryfarms My son brought me my first trap with these dimensions four years ago. I kept the design close to that of the original. I added a metal covered telescoping lid for easy removal and to prevent water from getting inside. I also added vent holes after I lost a swarm to suffoction in very hot weather. The swarm was huge. The double hole entrance seems to be very attractive to the bees. Scout bees run all around the figure eight arrangement when they are getting serious about choosing that location. The empty space below the frames seems to be important to them also. I have tried hive bodies and nuc boxes with frames. Nothing has been as successful as the arrangement in my video. So I am sticking with it. Here is a link to a good article that seems to support and explain some of the success my son and I have had with the traps. horizontalhive.com/honeybee-swarm-trap/bait-hive-how-to-catch.shtml Thanks for watching.

Just finished building this off your plan - Thank you. Question on the small side vents. Is there any reason you did not just drill small hole instead of using the small vent plug and drilling them? Or drilling a larger hole and putting 1/8 screen on the inside? What size are the small vent holes?
@beecatcher6653

Steven Thanks for your question. There is no reason you must use the white plug. It is simply what I had available at the time. I do like the idea that the holes are flush with the outside of the box. It might be less likely to let rain in. The plug fits nicely into a 1" dia hole. I would not make it any larger. I noticed that the bees check out those holes when they are scouting the box. One inch seems to work just fine. Use whatever you have available. I have used these traps for 7 or 8 years without paint. They still look good. They eventually get a gray weathered look that is nice and blends in well with the tree bark. Good luck catching swarms! That is the most exciting part of beekeeping for me.

Hi mike, your swarm catchers look really well made, when i was learning about bees one of the first things i was taught was the different ways to place panels in a hive, the warm way and the cold way. Through lots of testing and study(before my time) it was found that having the panels crossways to the entrance(cold way) was not near as successful as having them in line with the entrance(warm way) apparently in a tree or natural space the bees move into they start to build the panels the warm way, ie in line with the entrance. Your swarm boxes are in theory the cold way, have you ever tried building them with the entrance at either end to convert them to the warm way to see if they work any better? just curious. thanks.

Hi Derek, That is a very good observation. I never thought about it because I catch so many swarms with the front entrance that I saw no reason to change it. Here are some thoughts on the matter since you brought it up. The warm/cold way would probably apply to normal to Langstroth hives because there is only about a 1/2" bee space below the frames. There is approx 10" below the frames in this swarm trap design. When the bees enter, they are looking up at a nice large open volume below the frames, not the side of a frame. That open voulume is important to the bees. I don't think it matters which side the entrance is on. I really like it on the front because I hang my traps where I can see them easily. It is much easier to see scouting activity with a front entrace. Thank you for watching my video.

Great video!!! 10 swarms! wow! Thank you for sharing your design with the rest of us! Videos like this answer a lot of questions for us new bee keepers. I just got my first table saw this month, and built 4 x 5-frame deep nucs www.beesource.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/5framenuc_coates.pdf. And thanks to your video, now I know how modify them and reuse them as swarm traps! I can stack 2 nucs and strap them together to accomplish your configuration. All I have to do now is make add the vent and latch mods. Those are great design features! I plan to do spring splits, and place a swarm trap or two as well. That bottom hole would be great for Oxalic Acid Vaporizing, or a place to put a MAQS strip (just create a gap to put the strip by inverting the bottom cap). That way there'd be no need to open the hive at all. So here's a brain teaser project for you if you're up for the challenge: Create and post a multipurpose coates nuc design (pdf) that can be used as (1) a nuc, (2) swarm trap, and (3) bee vac (like this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cVcb35K1hr8.html ). That's all a bee keeper would ever need, right? :) Happy Trapping! ...Don...

I do not paint the traps. I like the natural gray look that weathering gives the wood. The plywood I use with exterior glue lasts a long time. I am still using the first trap I made 7 years ago. It is still in good shape. Thanks for your question. Good luck with catching swarms.

+Dale Wert Hillman #57078 double wing flush clip at Lowe's or Amazon. Attach one to bottom of lid on each end. Twist to lock onto matching wood strip attached to top of trap body. You can use a temporary screw on each end. Hope that helps.

I only use medium frames. Can I use mediums in this trap?
@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 6 лет назад
+greg Yes. Definitely. That is how I started out. I actually think the traps work better with medium frames because the bees are more attracted to the additonal volume below the frames. Put some old black comb in the bottom or use one frame with brood comb in the center. I do it that way to discourage wax moths. Good luck!

@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 4 года назад
I don't think precise location of the entrance opening is that important. I drill two 1" holes centered(3" to 4") up and 4" over. Honey bees seem to like an entrance that is well below the frames hanging inside the trap. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

What distance from bottom and side do you drill entrance holes?
@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 7 лет назад
Center is 4" inches from right side and 3" up from bottom. Something close to that dimension will work fine. Don't forget a couple of finish nails about 1/2" apart or 1/2" screen on inside to reduce opening. That will keep the birds out. Good luck! Swarm season will probable be here early in the northeast again this year because of the warm weather. I put my traps out the first of April so the bees can find them when they are ready to swarm. I can't wait! Thanks for watching.

I don’t see the dimensions for the lid? Can someone help. Trying to make a cut list before starting to save material. Thanks.
@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 6 лет назад
Hi Gavin. Thanks for your question. You can allow enough material in your cut-list for a plywood panel 10" W x 22 1/2" L used on top of a telescoping type cover with a wood frame perimeter. You can get by with an 8 1/2" W panel if you use a migratory style lid instead. In either case you may have to trim the panel to suit a cover that fits the top dimensions of your finished box properly. I apologize for not having a precise cut-list. Panel dimensions can vary depending on the thickness of plywood and other wood materials used for construction. Please look at this PDF file with some photos that might help you. The important thing is that 5 of your frames must hang properly inside the trap just like they do inside of a standard nuc box. www.columbianamahoningbeekeepers.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/SWARMTRAPDETAILSCOLOR2.pdf Good luck catching swarms next season! Hope that helps.

Hi B.C., I'm in southern Ohio, I've two hive, one older, one new from a swarm I caught when my older one swarmed. I have 3 traps out of a different design, design is smaller than yours. Early, before my bees swarmed, I noticed scouts flying around my traps, entering and all, but I caught the swarm before any moved in. Just checked again today, cold here and has been rainy, so did not suspect or see any scout bees. My question is, do you paint your boxes? I see on RU-vid many folks do, mine are not painted but are made of old plywood that might have old paint on them. I did rub beeswax on them, inside and out. I do plan on making a few more swarm traps closer to your design before another year. Just wondering about painting or leaving more natural color.
@beecatcher6653
@beecatcher6653 7 лет назад
+wildtrapper46 Smaller traps do not work as well? Mine are nearly 40 liters in volume. 40 to 70 liters is suppose to be ideal. Adding wax or one frame of very old brood comb helps a lot. I do not paint them. I like to let them weather and turn gray so they blend in with the trees. I recently found a research article that said not to paint them. Taking the swarm before it takes flight is the correct thing to do. Sometimes they find another location they like better than the trap. The weather here is also too wet and cold for swarms right now. Hope it warms up soon and stops raining. This is our tenth consecutive day of rain today. Good luck! Thanks for watching my video. horizontalhive.com/honeybee-swarm-trap/bait-hive-how-to- Check out this article about traps:

Thanks for the tip. I've all the stuff in my wood shop, waiting for me to build more. This is only my third year keeping bees, so learning as I go. I did make my traps large enough for 5 frames, but only put 4 in them to make them seem larger. Thinking about putting in frames with just a starter strip instead of full foundation. I did subscribe and like, also downloaded the pdf plans from your link.
