This poor guy was 100% innocent. Cops shouted conflicting orders while standing on his front porch, and he got shot for being confused. Also, the Wichita Police Chief was exceedingly cruel to the family afterward. He refused to return the personal items of the victim to his mother. Police enjoy exercising their power but don't want to take responsibility when things go wrong.

The Wichita Police department is another realm also and should be held responsible also (police chief along with City of Wichita have to defend Justin Rapp because he's a police officer and a city employee). Tyler Barriss, Casey Viner, and Shane Gaskill need to pay full restitution for this prank.

My advice… 🪁 Never be without a recording when confronted with anybody of any kind of authority. History has explained this so many times, protect yourself and protect your family. I have no reason to make anything up, I will tell you if I didn’t have a recording of some of their antics, I wouldn’t have 1 acre left of my property. And if you don’t want anything to do with the police, it’s a good idea to just do the right thing every day. Unless of course you don’t..😎

I think these are both examples of police being too fearful to competently do their jobs. When someone doesn't have a weapon, police will shoot to prevent even the remote possibility they might get one. When someone does have a weapon, police will run and hide rather than engage.

Because they are cowards. They are only tough when the person is unarmed, mentally ill, elderly/frail, etc. like when they tackled and dislocated the shoulder of an elderly woman with dementia who almost shoplifted from Walmart. When the cops show up she’s walking and they yell at her, she’s smiling and keeps walking. Obviously not a threat but they were literally laughing and showing other cops the video of the assault of this 90 lb woman saying “Wait for it… POP!!”. Then laughed. She sat with no medical care for 18+ hours. They then tried hiding the video and saying she got hurt by another inmate. Or the mentally ill teen who had the cops called on him for “yelling “ as he walked down “her street “. Tased 70+ times in under ten mins then when paramedics came they said they didn’t know what happened. Must have been drugs. 👌🙄

@@brandycarter9829 Actually, I just had the same exact thoughts as the original commenter here, and as I was strolling through the comments, I replied or commented on a number of people's comments, and this was one of them just near the top that caught my eye this time. I was SO confused what you were ever saying or meaning by this at first, then I just felt insulted and embarrassed once I figured out what you meant. It's so opposite of what I had in my brain when I left the comment that it truly took me a couple minutes to even understand what you were meaning or talking about. Dr. Grande is the only RU-vid channel I ever really watch or comment on, and there are several people who we've all been commenting for a while and will just say hey or say what we appreciate about each other's comments sometimes. Just to be clear, those "regulars" I often look through the comments to see their thoughts and then comment or reply are all women. And my comments to THEM are even more complimentary or kind (or in YOUR mind thirsty and slutty I guess). If a comment stands out or is funny or says things that make me think or that I strongly agree with, often I will say so. I never even pay attention to WHO made the comment. And I end EVERY comment or response to 98% of EVERYONE, regardless of Gender, Age, etc. With the emojis ✌️💖 (Peace and Love). I end a lot of my texts to my friends and family this way also- it's just a positive vibe/message I like to put out in the world. I guess I'm just naive, but I don't understand how me just saying a few kind words to someone about the comment they left, or how I agree, is being so "WOW, Thirsty much?? Calm down!" Etc. If I leave a comment and ANYONE responds with some kind words, it makes me happy and feel good, just human to human, so I do the same. I didn't even remember anything about this comment or poster except what my thoughts were about the comment, which I put above. So you're implying I'm trying to like hit on this guy, be creepy, over the top, get his attention in a (ahem) certain way I guess. Maybe I'm overly complimentary or positive or kind to people in general and online, bc I think there is a lot of negativity out there, esp online sometimes, and I'd like to send a very different feeling or vibe, just who and how I am, and I'm sorry you're so bothered by that. I'm just a naturally kind/friendly and positive person when interacting with other people. It doesn't even make any sense why I would do something like you're saying HERE anyway, on a RU-vid thread- you can't even DM anyone or have any way to have any private conversation or anything like that, so there would be no point at all and nowhere for that to even go, makes no sense. I wouldn't do that anywhere online, but if that was my aim, this would be the worst possible platform for being "thirsty" or trying to weirdly hit on someone. How is it ME being "thirsty" to compliment someone ELSE'S opinion anyway? I wasn't asking what anyone thought of me or trying to say anything about myself at all, wasn't looking for or expecting any kind of reply back of any kind, just thought I was doing what people DO in these comment threads, being a decent person and sharing my opinion on a comment I appreciated. I'm a Mom and I work from home, so maybe I don't get out enough lately and the things I'm saying are somehow coming across as inappropriate or sleazy or whatever you're thinking or accusing me of here, but I don't see how just a nice friendly comment pointing out that I liked and agreed with someone's comment and then ending it the way I end EVERY comment or reply to anyone could be considered being so thirsty and inappropriate. I didn't say one word about his looks or be flirty or inappropriate in ANY way, not that I can see anyway. I really do have a thing about respecting other people's boundaries and I NEVER want to make ANYONE uncomfortable, so I'll apologize to him if I'm missing something and he found my comment inappropriate or thirty or stalker-y or all the mean things you pointed out. Maybe it's just sad you can't just see kindness and positivity towards another human as JUST THAT, bc that's all I was trying to do. Go back and read my comments to many other people on here that are similar if there's a way to do that, you'll see that's just how I treat people, most of them are female. If it's a woman SOMETIMES I even say "Great comment LOVE! Really loved your smart take on this" or if someone says something nice in reply to my comment, I'll say something like "Aw thanks sweets! That really made my day! ✌️💖". What a thirty sleazy hussy I am to use such language to people I guess! But hey, thanks for putting me down and embarrassing me just for being myself and for sharing a few kind words and appreciation for a comment I just happened to like and agree with. I also said how much I liked Dr. Grande and his style in my comment there, guess that means I'm thirsty and after Dr. G also, you should probably go warn him! Maybe it would do you some good to be a little more kind or positive (or in YOUR words, "Thirsty" or desperate or whatever), instead of doing the opposite like you do, which is judging people, shaming them, putting them down, and embarrassing them, when you don't know one thing about the person or their actual intentions. It's best to just assume the worst and call them mean names and insinuate cruel or hurtful things about their character, right? If I have the choice between our two "methods", I would rather be "Thirsty" and creepy and needing to "calm myself down" every day of the week than to make crude assumptions and shame people and put them down. CLEARLY you never grew out of your High School Drama "Mean Girl" phase, but I'm not about ANY of that crap. Just something to think about. Hope you have a fantastic day Brandy. ✌️💖

Mathew, I would just like to real quick sincerely apologize if you felt I was being "thirsty" or inappropriate or needed to calm down etc., or if I came across as ANYTHING like that with my comment to you about liking your comment. I just liked and appreciated your comment, and I'm just a friendly and positive person, to anyone I interact with. Apparently it might have come off as creepy or thirsty or inappropriate in some way and I just didn't realize it. If that was the case AT ALL, or if I made you uncomfortable in any kind of way, please accept my apology. I end every comment or reply I write with the emojis ✌️💖 (Peace and Love), end a lot of my texts like that also. It's just a good positive vibe or message I like to put out into the world I guess. Anyway, I feel embarrassed, and I was only trying to compliment your comment here, bc it was near the top and caught my eye, and I had literally just been thinking all the same things you expressed in your comment. I commented on several other people's comments in similar ways, didn't even really look at who was making them. I was told I needed to stop being thirsty and that I needed to "settle down" though, by a woman who read what I wrote, so I thought there must've been something I missed that came across as creepy or weird or inappropriate, maybe?⁰- I really hope you didn't get that same vibe, as the other person who commented, and I hope I explained myself ok. This may seem like a weird comment/message (it does to me too!) but I truly have a thing about respecting boundaries and never wanting to make anyone feel uncomfortable, so felt I should just say that and explain that's just my personality towards everyone I Interact with, annoying as it may be or apparently is. I had a similar experience back when this stuff was on the news all the time. I left my home through the front door with the intent of heading to the gym. I had been meaning to pull some weeds growing in the bed just off the stoop. When I stepped off the stoop to pull them, I heard voices screaming for me to get out of the bushes. Thank God I obeyed. I was immediately told to put my hands in the air and drop everything in my hands - a water bottle in my car keys. It was then that I noticed two red dots bouncing around on my chest. The two officers had me run toward them with my hands up. They asked for my address and determined that the address they were looking for was next door. Four young guys had moved in a few weeks prior to this. I ultimately found out that they were professional gamers. They had to studio set up in the basement where they played call of duty and another game. They also had a video studio. At any rate, just before the police were going to flash bang the house, they started filing out. They had not concealed their IP address and we’re swatted. A police officer at the scene happened to work out at the same gym I did and recognized me. A month later he called me over and said that he had actually talked to the perpetrator who had told him to go F himself. He told me that the same guy had also threatened the life of a Massachusetts police officer and that the FBI was searching for him. @angelaraber
@angelaraber 2 года назад
That's really true. Many years ago, I was in a relationship with a man who was almost completely deaf. He wore a hearing aid in one ear but mostly relied on lip reading. One night, he was driving and a cop pulled us over. I don't remember why... just a routine stop for some reason. The cop was asking him questions, including where are you from? My BF had a very mild accent because of his deafness that used to confuse people. He sounded like he was from somewhere else and would often get asked that. Besides that, I soon realized that he wasn't answering his questions properly and the cop's demeanour was starting to get more serious. Because of his position sitting in the driver's seat and it was dark, it wasn't easy to read his lips. He also had a habit of faking it and not admitting that he was hard of hearing because people often would start yelling which didn't help at all and was embarrassing for him. I immediately told him that he better explain to the cop that he couldn't hear him, which he did then everything was okay. This was just a routine traffic stop and I was there to help but it was very eye opening.

My ex hated it because to him it would sound distorted and was much worse than if they just spoke in a normal tone. I have kind of a low voice so he had no problem understanding me. My best friend at the time, who he nicknamed Squeaky, would raise her voice when talking to him and sound very shrill. With a hearing aid, it just amplifies the shrillness and it becomes unbearable. People don't understand that hearing aids don't give you perfect hearing like a normal person. It just makes everything louder... there's no filter. It was a constant source frustration for him.

Great video Dr. G! 👍🥰 What a truly stupid and dangerous thing, this "Swatting"!! This was such a senseless and completely avoidable tragedy!! Imagine being that POOR GUY, or his family members inside. Getting shot to death for just walking out your front door, and in the panic and confusion and so many police officers yelling things, it's no wonder he got confused, and lowered his arm. Like he DID what they said, he might have thought it was now ok to now lower his arm, or just been in shock. Maybe one of the closer officers yelled "On the Ground!" or something, And he lowered his arm to start to do that. There are SO MANY reasons that could've happened, like Dr. Grande said. I can't help but think that his niece who was there when that happened and later took her own life, that the two incidents were related. Experiences like that can be especially traumatic on kids or teens, though I don't know her age. But he could've been like a Father figure to her. All this bc some stupid kid/young adult with nothing better to do but play video games all day had no regard for putting people in life threatening danger. And the police officer who killed this man- so many officers there, and he was pretty far away, yet he was the only one that perceived deadly force was necessary? He should at MINIMUM never be allowed to be an officer or in law enforcement ever again, and to me this seems like Manslaughter or something similar at least, in addition to his badge being revoked. I understand that situations like that are incredibly scary and stressful for police, and it seems somehow they often lack just basic good trauma/danger situation training, which is crazy bc that's their whole job. It feels like some of those lack of good training aspects are a bigger issue, not so much the fault of individual officers, at least at times. So many of them are heroes for running toward danger, but you HAVE to have a damn good reason before you take someone's life. And waiting 15 minutes to even call for medical attention? NO EXCUSE/JUSTIFICATION for that! They should've started life saving treatment right away (though with an AR-15, probably wouldn't have mattered, but still!)- I've never understand that. If you do HAVE to shoot, you should still try to everything to preserve life, especially since there is no way to know for sure yet if that person was even guilty of anything. It's all just mind blowing, the different levels of bad choices that led to an innocent man just living at the wrong address to lose his life. Thanks for your ever incredible layout and Analysis of this case, I hadn't seen the Netflix doc, but I much prefer your videos and style anyway!! I didn't have prior knowledge of this case so, I appreciate you sharing your analysis. I believe that your final words summed up what happened perfectly. The one aspect that you touched on is rarely given consideration. The manner in which information is related by the dispatcher. I worked as a 911 dispatcher and eventually became the department training officer. The dispatcher plays a larger role than people recognize. If they are inexperienced then they can startled by the caller and the emotion they have is transferred through the radio to the responding officers. If the dispatcher is sleepy or simply doesn't want to be at work, they can be lazy about obtaining information from the caller that could be critical to the responding officers. It is a job which deserves more appreciation and more scrutiny. Care must be used in hiring a person with the right temperament and with skills to quickly assess emergency situations.

I have had more than a few occasions to call police departments throughout this country, and I have never encountered anything like this. Mostly, dispatchers field calls from 911 or routine numbers and then police are dispatched or a police officer calls back. It is curious the Wichita Police don't have a more sophisticated way in which they determine the nature of emergencies and then make decisions based on the information. Also, no 911 call is untraceable. That is also curious. This is indicative of a complete incompetence and breakdown of any systems in place in that police department. It isn't difficult to determine fraudulent phone calls made to police. The departments which believe any of these swatting calls need extra training and better technology. Police or police dispatchers ask many questions on a 911 phone call. They just don't react and respond to any old complaint or threat. These examples of mishandling by police departments which result in the death of innocent people is unconscionable. I have not heard of these phone calls before now. I didn't even know they existed.

@Estelle, I live in the Los Angeles area, so unfortunately, all who live here heard about a lot of swatting incidents reported on the news even before the chuckleheaded Tyler Barris became involved in doing this. It's too bad he didn't learn his lesson after going to jail for the ABC studio bomb threat. Somehow he didn't get the message that doing things like that is a pretty messed up. It's so sad Mr. Finch and his family, especially his niece, had to bear the burden of his obtuseness and callousness. In the years before Tyler got the dimwitted idea that swatting is a "fun and exhilarating" thing to do, there were many celebrities caught up in this, including Justin Bieber, Tom Cruise, Miley Cyrus, Ashton Kutcher, Kim Kardashian, Clint Eastwood, and Paris Hilton. In just one week alone in 2013, Selena Gomez, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, Ryan Seacrest, Sean Combs, and Rihanna were all targeted. In 2012, there were conservative politicians and radio hosts who were victimized, and in addition to all the hundreds, if not thousands of gamers who were swatted, it's a minor miracle that more people weren't accidentally killed.

Here is an idea for the police. Stop screaming at people in an extremely aggressive way, using profanity, and train to develop a little emotional control. When officers are agitated and the situation in total chaos, accurate perception is destroyed. Accidents and unnecessary violence often follows. It does not matter whether the victim is guilty, innocent, mentally ill, or not. Introducing extreme agitation does not help. It will make a dangerous person more unpredictable and it will disorient an innocent person. Just speak in a clear, normal voice and stay calm. This can be trained. Doctors and pilots are trained to do this, because their professions understand that extreme emotion causes poor crisis management and poor decision making.

I was once picked up in a sweep that was supposedly countering a juvenile brawl, that never took place. It wasn't the first time for me to have to deal with violent police "overenthusiasm". So, their attempts to disorient me, by slamming me against various vehicles and shout conflict orders from opposing directions, didn't rattle me. But the billyclub against the inside of my knees, required restraint on my part. Since SWAT was a new concept, and it wasn't perpetrated on an address, but on a societal segment, the name would probably not be appropriate. What is identical, is the visitation of "enthusiastic confrontation" upon completely unsuspecting victims, who are then further victimized by intentional disorientation. After a night in jail and a hearing on the following morning, I was charged with a number of misdemeanors (along with 12 other complete strangers) and allowed to post bail. My luck was that the semi-government project that I worked for (as a youth counselor) put up the thousand dollar bail money, and I was released to the recogniscence(?) of the program head. I immediately started gathering evidence and witnesses, even before going home for a shower. In small town America, you tend to know who is employed by the local police. None of those active in my arrest, were local. That led to some pointed questions that the Mayor seemed surprised to hear. The charges subsequently disappeared, the money refunded and the issue receded from my sight. I'm almost ashamed to admit to not following up on what happened to the other random 11 (some drunk well beyond straight lines) with whom I shared that cell block. Never heard another word about the incident. Apparently, the only punishment meted out, was the experience, itself.

Years after when he was telling me this, he admitted that they were actually right. At that time, he WAS too aggressive due to his anger (rage, really) at first his wife divorcing him and getting their kids and home, at being kicked out of the Marine Corps, and his father dying while he'd been restricted to base while his case was being adjudicated, thereby not making it to his father's funeral. He, himself, told me that had that town hired him onto the police force, he likely would have been an aggressive and violent cop. Props to the guy for maturing over the years, calming down, and recognizing his limitations. Major props also to the police department for seeing the problem and caring for their citizens and NOT hiring a trouble recruit. More departments need to get a clue and get the aggressive and stupidly violent cops the hell off their forces. Talking to you, Wichita, KS.

Swatting is about as much of a prank as arson is. Time for some legislation to make the consequences commensurate with the risk to law enforcement and the community.

They need harsher punishment than that. The family was terrorized, and one person was killed.

The topic of the day is weaponization. I remember the Tyler Barriss situation and people don't know the weaponization of police is a serious thing. The cruel thing is that Tyler Barriss had mental problems and was homeless at the time during the incident. He used a VOIP phone in a Los Angeles library to do the swatting. We can talk about the other individuals that were involved, but this wasn't just a mere prank. To this day, I don't think Tyler grasp the damage he done to a family, he just wanted "brownie points" in an online game

Thank you for covering this story because I know a current RU-vidr that is doing a similar thing. Benjamin Lindsey AKA Benny Keyz, Blood money Benny Keyz, and Hitman Benny Keyz has been swatting people. His favorite is a RU-vidr Ernie Shell and Benny's latest call got Ernie tassed and they show it all on RU-vid.

Can you do a story on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who releases criminals who push Asian women to their deaths on the subway, but sends a 51 year old bodega owner to Riker's Island for defending himself against a man who got behind the counter and assaulted him? What is the psychology involved when people like Bragg or Gascon of Los Angeles seem to make policies that are a slap in the face to reason?

The police need to have a policy to establish a leader for the response team who will be responsible for communicating with a suspect. When everyone there is yelling at the same time, they give conflicting commands like "don't move" or "show us your hands" or "get on the ground." Especially for someone who is innocent and happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and is scared by having a dozen guns pointed at them, how are they supposed to know what to do? Even if someone is guilty, but at least has a heads up about why the police are yelling at them, they still won't know what to do. This happens all the time, so why do the police have such a hard time implementing a response procedure that will prevent this confusion? It doesn't seem that it should be that difficult to do. Even if it's not possible to have only one officer give commands, at least they should be trained to give the same command. I also don't understand why they continue to sit on people who have been handcuffed. Tony Timpa, Elijah McClain, and George Floyd and many others have died because of this practice, and yet police officers still continue to do it. I don't understand why.

Wow. What an asshat Tyler was. Thanks for the fair and unbiased analysis Dr. Grande. This is horrifying, that someone could call the police and trick them into something like this.

EVEN IF there were a hostage scenario the police response to these incidents are beyond outrageous, HEAVILY armed SWAT teams trained to overtake equally armed terrorists respond with merciless brutality, it's ALWAYS at the expense of an unarmed innocent victim and NOT because the media ONLY focuses on such outcomes, these teams are trained with military expertise when 99.99% of their encounters are with civilians-they even arrive to these scenes in military vehicles dressed up as police units, the energy and adrenaline only fuels these disasters I know the police were unawares as to proceed in this circumstance BUT as stated the call to the city hall and just the outrageousness of the subject matter should have cause some "pause" as to the legitimacy of the claims I worked for a company where my company truck had a "how's my driving" sticker on it with an 10 character ID number and 800 number, I was going through a divorce at the time, an "anonymous" complaint call was made on my truck stating I had pulled out in front of this individual and began doing doughnuts as I had my middle finger raised out of the window, I initially laughed at the claim thinking I was being goofed on or pranked, but NO the management had taken the entirety of it seriously and began disciplinary action, now my truck had sensors on top of sensors where nothing indicated excessive acceleration/excessive steering/speeding/squealing tires/swerving all of which is needed to perform this behavior and all of which would send an alert via the gps system in every company truck, I had other notices issued against me prior to this complaint but my truck was never near the locations that were reported yet these were all being accumulated as actual incidents, with the "doughnut" case I was at a 4way intersection, I was heading west as the sun was setting with the sun right in my face, I'm stopped with another truck stopped heading south, I'm holding up my hand to shield the sun as one of those "stand offs" at a 4way is happening, I cant see a thing and wont proceed until this truck moves along, there's an excessive wait then the truck moves, as it proceeds south it moves out of the sun's direct glare I can see the truck is being driven by my ex's boyfriend/husband, my ex and I actually had court that day where I had prevailed-this all occurred after that hearing, as the specifics are being recited to me by management about this particular complaint it dawns on me that I saw my ex's new man AND I had won on a case against her which put her in a negative "light" with the courts-also the "complaint" was to have happened on Friday and I was being made aware of it the following Monday so I kind of forgot about the 4way moment because it was 3days prior and uneventful, ANYWAY I make this court and outcome declaration to management and upon realizing who my "anonymous" caller may have been looked up the dates of the other complaints and sure enough they were made on the very days of other trial dates where my ex failed to prevail-EVERY complaint was made after I had a hearing with my ex, YET management proceeded with disciplinary action, "WHAT THE HELL DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THIS VIDEO!?", I believe people will proceed with punishment as long as there's an inclining that they can in spite of clues that that type of action may not be necessary, yes I truly believe if an individual can inflict misery onto another they will proceed especially if they can deflect the responsibility onto their position of authority-i.e. power corrupts
