My favorite Swedish ESC song has to be Främling 1983. Also the song from 1988 is a huge hit in Sweden, it's the song that people sing in the shower when they fancy themselves opera singers. Also it's played at bars after closing time when people are leaving and getting their jackets and EVERYONE sings along in a drunken wonderful sing-a-long.
oh and also ..Björn Skifs and "det bli alltid bättre framåt natten " ..still played on pubs today (almost every night in sweden ) ..absolutely iconic ..just poves ..you will not ever know where the song takes off
About the clothes. I've heard they did make strange looking clothes to avoid certain taxes. I saw an interview where they said that you get reduced taxes in Sweden if the clothes are specifically made for the stage and not everyday- wear. :) So that's why they are dressed quite strange. :) Not sure if that's the way it was, but I think I read/heard it somewhere.
The "average ballad" that won Melfest in 1988 is one of the swedish people's all time favorites! It won a competition one of Sweden's biggest radio stations had THIS year (2024) about which Melfest song is the best of all times! Beating Loreen and ABBA and all the others! And since 2006 it is also in the official psalm (hymn) book. "Stad i ljus" is definately one of the most loved melfest songs ever in Sweden! It is NOT an average ballad. And the 12th place is because Tommy Körberg (one of Sweden's best singers ever!!) was really ill when he competed that year and they even considered having the songwriter sing it instead.
In 2005 it was supposed to be Nanne Grönwall with "Håll om mig". But the international jury screwed us over. I recommend listening to it instead. In 2010. At the time I was writing on the eurovision site as an official blogger from Sweden. There was a massive smear campaign against Anna Bergendahl started by the Head of the International fan club. because she had (On account of being really sick when she arrived at the venue) missed an interview she was supposed to have with him. So he made it his personal mission to make sure she would be punished. 2013. Again.. We were supposed to have sent Yohio with the song "Heartbreak hotel".. But the international jury thought it was too "Trans and LGBTQI friendly" especially after Russia having banned "pedophilíc and gay" propaganda..... So the people were overruled.. (sometimes it sucks to have an international jury).
In 2005 the internation jury robbed us of the perfect winner!! Listen to the one that the swedish public wanted to win: Nanne Grönwall "Håll om mig" and you can be as mad at the international jury as I am...
1986 10:52 was so bad, the Frans of the 80:s, but Lena Philipsson also competed that year with ”kärleken är evig”. Which was so much better, probably could have won 😅
