Rasmus Ristolainen scored at 9:42 of overtime to lift Finland to an unforgettable 3-2 win over host Sweden in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship on Sunday.
To all the people that say that: "sweden deserved to win, they were the better team" need to realize that goalies are also part of a team, infact the most important position in hockey and that's where Finland had the edge. Also do you Swedes and similiar fellas even realize how many times Finland has lost an gold medal game regardless of being the "better team?" If you have followed hockey since the last 10 years you must know that goalies are the main reason why Finland is a dark horse/ medal contender every year & every tournament, just like this one.
This game had quite possibly the worst refs I've ever seen. Except maybe for IIHF WC 2014 final, FIN-RUS when the refs were possibly bribed or threatened by russian intelligence. In both cases, the refs actively tried to make Finland lose. I've never seen anything alike, and it still baffles me how these refs can look themselves in the mirror. A disgrace.
Sweden was better... They skated and played like a team, Finland played deffensive and their box was verry little, wich made the swedes hard too find the net.
aikmanist Correction: Swedes had lots of skilled players, but Finland played like a team and defended their goal very very well. They also scored one goal more, so they won the game. :)
VNYTION But you're not even able to win that! You just should let Finns to get into the finals so we could bring the gold to north Europe. If you're able to get into the finals you should f*cking win it!!!
+Meen132 yea well that nomination did lead anywhere, so we r bad actors but what about u, ur national team should earn a new nickname, the flying sweeds, u were so good actors that refs wanted to give u awards=penalties to us
Onnittelut, Suomi !!! Great game and a great win! You guys deserved it, congratulations for the gold medal! Many greetings from your Russian neighbours!
Congrats from Russia! All Russian fans was for Suomi today! Because Dansk made terrible move net away in semi-final against us at end of the game. Sweeden NOT deservet that gold, but Suomi did, no doubt about it! Congratz again!
Peter Olsson back in 1960s... Finnjävle and en finne igen and mongols or what else bla blah. Thats why maybe. U dont like finns so finns dont like swede
Even though Canada came away without a medal. I'm still proud of them. And I'm very happy that Finland finally won a gold medal. They truly played well and deserved the gold medal.
Sweden was the best team during 60 minutes and Finland during overtime, you were better when i mattered the most. Congratulations! From a Swedish Brother.
Finland got the early lead and was in the lead more or less trough out the game and just defended well. Without the horror refing it would probs have ended 1-2 but yeah Swedes were playing better.
Finland was better during the first 60 min also which can be seen from the scoreboard: 2-1 for Finland and one additional goal for Sweden with the help of the referees. Finland got an early lead and played very wisely after that just like Sweden would have done in that same situation.
Larsludwig You didn't get my point. Finland tried to freeze to game because it was in the lead. That's what Swedes have always done and always do when they are in the lead. Get an early lead and then play more through defense. That's what the Finns did succesfully and thus were better.
yes, juuse saros, the goalie of finland was amazing in that game but everyone are forgetting teuvo teräväinen, who was the best player and scoring leader in the tournament and captain of the finland's team. he created so many chances for finland and 13 assists is the result. he assisted all of finland's goals in the final. also mäenalanen who scored 7 goals and became the goal scoring leader in the tournament and of course winning goal scorer ristolainen were important pieces in the team. so finland's team wasn't full of nobodies. for example teräväinen and ristolainen are both 1st round prospects to NHL.
Swedes only played against like Norway and Slovakia. Sweden's only real games were against Finland and Russia. Finland had games against Sweden, Russia, Chech and Canada
Sweden also lost to Finland. Finland defeated not just Sweden and Russia but also Canada and Chech which are a little bit different caliber than Slovakia and Norway.
***** So your point is you'd place Norway over Canada? Come on, get real. Learn to pay respect where it's due. Finland, though an underdog, was overall better and that's proven by the final score.
***** If you actually read/listen to N/A experts and others Sweden had the best team by far on paper. But the Finns gameplan was smart and good and gave them the win, great teamwork after all.
As far as i know only the big numbers on the scoreboard matter. I admit that Sweden played offensively better in this game but i'd like to hear someone's neutral opinion about referees in this game. Greetings from Finland and sorry about my English.
Hope to see U there, though i don't think that Finland gets a good enough team for the olympics...then again they did not give much of a chance for this team either. Team from thev 30's :)
This was a great tournament. Obviously being Canadian I am disappointed but you can't win them all. And what would be the point if you did really. It's much more competitive and even these days. Finland deserved that gold medal. Always an exciting tournament. Congrats Finland!
Man that was one hell of a match, im so happy that we managed to win! It was a tough match and in my opinion both teams deserved to win. Sweden had better team ''on paper'' and you controlled most of the game but as a team, Finland did its absolute best, and we were better in the situations when it mattered the most. But gotta say, it's really nice to see that most of you swedes are still respectful and nice towards the opponent even if you lose the game. The real players and the real men are those who shows some respect to their enemies no matter are they winning or losing. That's something i really appreciate. Of course it's still sweet to beat you up, but after all, you are good neighbours an great opponents! :) Cheers, and respect from Finland!
Funny to see some Swedes crying all the way from internet to their top players how they were better side, how Finland played "wrong style" etc. Grow up! Finland totally deserved the title after three ridiculous penalty whistles in the third period. And that "Sweden were the best offensice team" comment you can leave alone, Russia were better side on the semi's with the same measures. Congratulations, Team Finland! And of course, Conratulations for Sweden and Russia for their prizes also!
Congrats Finland to the gold, Sweden was the better team but the one that scores the most goals wins and that´s how it is in hockey. Nice too see that the Swedish fans could accept that you won instead of "booing you out"
This win served as a retaliation to Sweden's win in Torino Winter Olympics in '06. Finland beat Sweden in the preliminary games, was never even a point down in any game until the final game, which they lost. This is Finland's time to shine. In gold.
Congratulations Finland:D! U played a really tight defensive play and had a super hot goalie and obviously Ristolainen& ´Teraväinen, so yeah;) After all Nordic are the winners here:D! Great to see two countries with about 15m ppl all together beating big nations like Russia, USA and Canada;) Hyvä Suomi Heja Sverige!
Yes! The first gold for 16 years! I truly think we deserved the gold, Finland had the best goaltender of the tournament, solid defense and our team scored goals at the right time. Feels so great! #torillatavataan
Really hope this helps bring more popularity to this tournament. We love it in Canada (albeit a bit too much), would be great if the rest of the hockey world joined in on the fun.
and most of the time in 5v5 it just looked like the presure in the finnish zone was really huge but it was all in the corners they didn't get in the zone and almost all the shots were without traffic so Saros who was red hot had no problem with them
Finland's goalie saved them and it was he who finally settled the game. Sweden had the clearly better team and this match was like made for them, but congratulations to the silver Crowns. :)
It's always good to beat Sweden in ice hockey. Especially in Sweden and in the gold medal game (Y) :) SUOMI ON UUSI MAAILMANMESTARI, HEI!!!!! :D DEN GLIDER IN!!!!!!! ;) :D
So happy to see Sweden losing.. They were so sure about the victory. 3rd period calls from the reffs were just a joke.. The faces of the fans, priceless..! And the comments after the game that better lost, tactics from 30's.. Cmon, you made all your goals on 4v5 situations, finland made all goals on full... Last goal was awesome!
Well first of all, congrats Finland! After all i'm happy our neighbours takes the gold medal when we don't. It's a shame that a defensive team playing pretty boring hockey takes the win doh. The best offensive team in this tournament will remain Sweden but it obviously wasn't' enough. Once again congrats Suomi! -swed
Now you know how it felt like, when Finland lost to Sweden in Olympics 2006 (3-2). Let's see if Sweden-Finland will be in the Olympic final! Rematch, with the best players! What could be better?
Uncle Sam Well finland once again doesn't look that good "on paper" when it comes to the Olympics. But i guess this proves hard teamwork can take you far, i know it's cliché but a hard working team can beat talent. Russia will have an amazing offensive line-up as well as Canada and Sweden. But i guess the Finns will be underdogs again, you seem successful in that position ;)
VNYTION i agree that canada sweden and russia will have amazing teams, but im curious to see how russia is going to succeed with a team that has alot of players that really like to go for goals on themselves. like kovalchuk and radulov in the last world cup, those two guys were the goalscorers for the whole team and finland beat them with really good teamwork.
Yeah you're probably so young you haven't heard this ageless saying: with offense you win individual games, with defense you win tournaments. That's all there is to it :)
+JuhoThe Gamer EI VOI VÄIITTÄ ETTÄ RUOTSI ON PEREMPI SUOMI ON KYLLLÄ 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999KERTTA PAREMPI
Just a comment to all the people saying the winning goal was offside, it wasnt. You are allowed to have a foot inside the blue line as long as you are not fully inside. Therefore, the play was not offsides, and was a good goal.
I believe this game was settled by Swedish media that wrote all about how it was obvious that Sweden will win the gold medal. They had all the gold medal celebrations all worked out before the game. It made huge pressures for the Swedish players, especially goaltender Oscar Dansk who wasn't as restful as Finland's Juuse Saros. Nice victory for Finland. Unfortunately those referees weren't at the same level as the game itself.
Why so much hate? Show some respect. Sweden was the better team 60 minutes of the game. They skated and ruled the offensive play. But Finland had a verry good goalie wich is the reason why Finland won. If Saros had not played that good that he did Sweden would have won maybe 5-2. The reason why Finland got so many penaltys was because Sweden was verry skilled in their "offensive" play wich made the finns tired and wich was the result to the penaltys. But Finland played verry skiled in their defensive with a little box wich made it hard for the Swedes to score 5 against 5. Finland did an heroic match beating a stronger, better Sweden. So congrats to the gold.
Seems that some Swedes are bad losers. Sweden didn't "deserve" to win and wasn't the better team. Of course Sweden was more aggressive in its offensive play as Finland was defending its lead. That's how Sweden would have played, too. Also, Swedes were mostly banging their heads to the disciplined Finnish defense and, although he was clearly the better goalie today, Juuse Saros didn't have to make a lot of miraculous saves. You also have to remember that the refs donated the second goal for the Swedes. Three penalties in a row for Finns from which two were out of nothing.
Also you have to remember that ice hockey is a game where both offense and defense matter. Sweden's defense were in big trouble in a lot of times during the match and the numbers could have been even clearer for the Finns. Finns knew in advance that Sweden's defense is its weak spot.
:D Technically Ur rights, Finland is FennoScandia...but spilitting hairs here...Finland's culture is Scandinavian...not Russian....and if U wan't an history lesson, I'm more than happy to give it. Don't be an ashole.....I guess u will be. U know what, we don't really care.
***** Wow, U just elevated up to new level of stupidity. "Overwhelming hate ...etc." I work in the field of security and that work takes me to all nordic countries...there is no hate...did u have a brainfart when u wrote the comment. Yes U have the to right to speak ur mind, but do not generalize. And get over that WW2, and check ur sources. Sweden helped us by sending food and civilian help. Some swedes chose to volunteer to fight our war. The monetary help from Sweden doubled Finland's state budget. Those are just couple facts. U talk about betrayal, well by definition that requires a contract or promise, and there was none. Sweden did well to avoid the war...it would have been stupid by them to go to war in a moment in time when no one knew what the outcome would be.The only thing I agree with U is the fact, that Sweden provided raw material to make steel to Nazi's and kinda played both sides. Your's sincerely, res. yliltn. M. Aho All this mumbojumbo from a hockey game....no further comments from me. Let's keep the Nordic cooperation and friendship strong.
***** Kuules nyt kusipää, olen reservin yliluti, enkä haluaisi kuulla susta yhtään enempää. Notta "petturi", tämä loukkaa. olet varmaan joku kusinen alikessu (tuskin sitäkään), ja jotkut muuten tekee töitäkin elääkseen . Really can't be bothered....5 years in FFL, 2eme REP, 4eme Compagnie D'Eclairage et D'Appuis. 5 years in Finnish Air Force ...so: "traitor"? Grow up.. Tu rigoles o'quoi?. and in conclusion just shut the fuck up. Please :)
Wow, what a tournament! SO happy for Finland after what the Swedes did to the Russians (Petterson, who was suspended for this game). The Finns played awesome defensively and so were deserving to get the gold. Even though my nation (Canada) didn't medal, I'll celebrate with the gold medalists! See you next year.
So its ok for 3 russian players to hit a Swedish player while he is down on the ice after the whistle? The russians behaved like trash the whole tournament and deserved a lot more than they got...
Svaga nerver.
