You're liking the Viggen? I think you're actually starting to like Sven. The guy risks his life to kick your engine back to life unlike a certain RIO that punches out at the first sign of trouble. ;)
I live in Sweden, by the coast. And when i was a kid in the 80s, i was standing in the window looking out over the sea. And i saw this dot over the horizon that kept getting bigger and bigger. Then it just expanded in to a Viggen at absurdly low altitude that flew right over my house. I could see every detail under it and the noise was deafening. It felt like the whole house was shaking. This was one of the best moments in my childhood.
@@sosbabe2804 I doubt it was that fast, but it was very low. But it was a different airforce back then. Training was way more extreme with lower altitudes and more planes involved, and there was a lot more accidents, with a bit over 600 casualties from the conception of the swedish air force up to the 90s. Different times. I do remember some supersonic flights, but they were over the sea. But it was the low level flights that were the most memorable.
@@AndreasSweden They regularly flew Viggens at mach 0.95 at 30 feet off the ground... When I did my military service I had a recon one fly straight over me when I was out in the field.. It was at treetop level, and HUGE.. scared the bejesus out of me as it literally came out of nowhere and then was gone...
@@MrZnarffy They are rather imposing when at 30 feet lol. I was at P7 Revingehed in '93, and the most exiting thing i saw was a helicopter. However, on my second day, this one dude in my platoon went to poop in the woods. Shortly after he left we heard the the noise of APC's and our dude came running for his life with his pants half down, toilet paper flying in the wind, frantically screaming "THE TANKS ARE COMING" as the APC's slowly rolled by him. The roofs were open on the APC's and amused soldiers was looking down on him and cheering him on as he was running for his life. Another golden memory from the Swedish military.
I remember a Viggen dogfight just above my schoolyard, made the classroom windows vibrating with a horrible sound. Lots of amused children and annoyed teachers.
Good video and great flying! I flew the viggen in the Swedish airforce and it was an awesome plane for it‘s time. Impressive acceleration with 3s or less for every 100km/h speed increase. Initial turn rate is fine but no chance on a continued fight against a gripen. If you stay low altitude and below 15 aoa you should not have a problem with the engine.
i can't help but notice a similarity of dogfighting and chess. Mostly baits and thinking ahead, as well as energy management, which i see as analogy to holding the center of a chess board. That move you showed in Tacview really highlighted that for me. Interesting stuff!
@@Asghaad An JA-37D with those and a glass cockpit would rock the most, but is much probably less likely to be made than an older JA-37 version with steam gauges and no AMRAAMs. I'd take any, though :)
May you rest in peace Sven Bangstrum. May your mighty Engine Hammer, bang on in Valhalla. May the knowledge that the Gripen, and your Son, Bjorn Svenson, continues you epic legacy! Friends, raise a glass. Till Valhalla!
While the AJ37 was a dedicated strike fighter. The design was good enough to develop a dedicated fighter version. They also considered a redesign Draken for that task.
lived right next to an military airbase in sweden my entire life, (not military any more now) but i still remember the Draken flying over the house at full blast. man i miss that.
I remember during the cold war, when the airforce had a night exercise above Stockholm ( somewhere in the early - mid 80's ). Imagine waking up in the middle of the night because Viggens where scrambled and flew right above your apartment. It scared the hell out of my poor mother :D
Both Viggen and Gripen are multi-role. Viggen was feared by our neighbours because if its short scramble and excellent interception capabilities. Gripen does all that too but is smaller and more agile and also quite sneeky :)
I really wished they made a JA(C or later) or AJS variants for DCS, later in life the thing carried AMRAAMS and with an instantaneous turn of around 25 degrees* a second, all with an improved RM8B engine would be fantastic.
@@tr6431 "totally different" is bit of the stretch, JA is the same airframe with minor modifications, slightly better engine and radar. its like calling F-4C and F-4E "totally different aircraft". its still a Viggen, its aerodynamics are neraly identical, its flight characteristics are slightly better due to the better engine and it has better provisions for guns. frankly the largest difference between JA and AJ is the radar lastly you missed the point, the OP asked for "AJS variant" which is the variant in DCS being flown here, also made a mistake because only JA-37 had the improved engine and the only variant capable of carrying AMRAAMs was the JA-37D
@@Asghaad The Ja IS a totally different plane from the aj / ajs. It has a longer airframe, different engine, different avionics, different radar, different rudder on the wings, different weapons capabillities, it has a fixed radar guided cannon mounted under the fuselage, more defence systems, more hardpoints etc...
@@Asghaad Nope. The ja is a TOTALLY different airplane. In literally every way. From the computers, to the hud, to the radar, to the missiles, to the gun, to the fuselage, to the wings, to the ecm, to the partial fbw...
If you don't know how to keep a consistent speed, how is your opponent supposed to reliably shoot with lead? I think your secret weapon is the compressor stall 😆
The SAAB HQ would've been pretty mad right now if the fight went the other way. After all, the Gripen was built upon the lessons learnt from the Viggen
You should realy bind the restart button to your HOTAS, that makes it slightly more reliable to get it started. I think the button is marked "återstart" in the cockpit.
Actually, a Viggen would be superb with new avionics, particular relax stability controls. Can be customized this simulator to digital controls of new avionics or is just a simple game?
I think Sven was having a chat with the union there, in the third round... something about not being ejected from the aircraft in the first round, when GS bailed....? =)
Always curious, how are the flight models developed for these mods? Are these models validated or basically just cool looking skins on an existing flight model with maybe some tweaks to thrust and weight etc?
some mods are simple flight models others have more extensive work on them the A4 mod for example is a real a4 flight model the gripen guys said they worked with a real gripen pilot to get the model accurate, so to answer your question it depends on the mod and how much work the team that made them was willing to put into them.
Does Sven have his own u-tube channel? I want to know how hard I have to hit the engine when it fails... maybe a walkthrough... maybe he cooks meatballs back there in the heat and thats why it takes time sometimes for the engine to get back online, he is busy.
Just a suggestion. Pit a Russian Mig 15 against a Corsair F4U-4b. It seems if both have better than average, aggressive pilots this could be interesting, what with the Corsair having 4 20M cannons and a turning radius made to frustrate an early jet jockey.
I always have loved the Viggen. The Saab commercials for the car name Viggen, with the jet in the back ground. I still want one of them, even though they are supposed to be really crap cars.
Hey Growly...was wondering if you could name the top 5 pilots you are likely to encounter in DCS dogfighting? Be nice to keep an eye out for their names and see how they perform etc I imagine it would be a bit of an honor to make your list too...
Hi! I don't know how it works in DCS (you have to buy the planes or sth.) but is it possible for you to play the Zero in the 'Pacific theatre'? Also, where is your intro's sound from?
Sadly there is no Zero available. The intro sound are real recordings from the The Gulf of Sidra Incident where two F-14 where engaged by Lybian planes.
With what's going on at the moment, maybe Gripen (with your French/Canadian friend) and some Russian stuff? Russia has had fighters in Swedish airspace in recently.
There was an incident where a sr-71 had an engine failure over Russia, it was still able to fly but it was slow. Sweden came to the rescue with a flight of the viggins, the Soviet pilots were scared spittles of the viggin and boogied out of swedish airspace. It likes to go really fast.
The Viggen when I was at school in the 1980's was seen as cool, purely because it wasn't American or Russian. Canards were sooooo exotic. We didn't understand what Canards did or were for but they were cool. However DCS reality is rather different. That engine knocking is horrendous..A little like a Mosquito spluttering in negative G's.
I'm an American and I think the Viggen is still pretty damn cool. For a dedicated ground attacker it can put up an epic dogfight. Props to the Swedes they are masterful aircraft craftsmen.
It's to bad you can modify the Viggen by swapping out a better engine. Sorry Sven, but a more reliable power plant would really make the viggen more capable. haha.
I wonder if someone were to put a better engine in the Viggen, if it would perform well enough to be competitive. Upgrade the electronics and engine and maybe it would be interesting. Would be neat to have a "sandbox" on aircraft where you can try different engines, avionics and electronics packages and so forth, to see how older aircraft would perform with upgrades.
The Swedish Attack/fighters have generally always been first deployed as Primary Attack aircraft and secondarily Fighter aircraft. (probobly more intercept, but that word don´t exist in Swedish) then developed into other platforms, like a primary fighter. Specially so true for Viggen and Lansen. While lansen was in dedicated Attack, fighter and and surveillance, the attack and fighter for Viggen is both dual role. (The Draken Attack aircraft was never deployed in Sweden due to Lansen already existing). Anyway, the original AJ37 was used as target practising for the J35 Draken. Vitnes from the pilots implies that they where more evenly matched than they suppose to. When the JA37 was introduced the J35 was toast. The Development of aircraft in Sweden at this point was so hard core that the Viggen first flight was prior to the Draken being introduced. Its also worth saying that JAS39 gripen have been the main fighter in service for almost 30 years and first flight 35 years ago, and still the main fighter. Going back 35 years from 1986 we are in 1951, the year the first jet fighter was introduced. Granted, the JAS 39EF have very few components in common with the ABCD versions.... The JAS 39B actually retroactively renamed B, from previously being named SK39, meaning training aircraft.
I don't understand this whole thing with the engine. What was going on there? Was the engine actually shutting down, or was it just loss of control from stalling or somesuch?
