Swedish SAAB Draken - F18 - adam-gul-petter-red -Music Video 

As a kid (mid 80s) I saw two Drakens take off at Barkarby airfield from our car, on the road beside the airfield. To this day it is the most awesome moment I have ever experienced.

2:58 is a footage from Västerås year 1983, last flight of Drakens from F1 airbase in Västerås. I saw this ovverflight standing on the roof of Domus warehouse in Västerås and have a photo of these planes. Can you see they form F1? Adam Gul was originally one of the Draken wings at F1 but was moved to F18 Tullinge already 1981.

Yeah Saab Draken! Awesome plane! We had Draken in Denmark for many years, i remember that it made a hell of a noise but looked cool and flew good as well. My uncle was a draken mechanic on the f-35XD at Karup airbase. I wish that the danish airforce would buy the new Saab jet instead of the JSF from US. Back to the good ol' days, yeeeah!!

That is true to some extent, but you should also note that the swedish armed forces has undergone a lot of changes since the 80's. The public opinion on the armed forces too has changed; I find that most people view the armed forces as a waste of tax money.

Ok ,I see. As far as I know, the m/55 has never been sold to the public, and it is not in use by the air force any more. Tests showed that the leather shrinked when exposed to fire, and thus not offering any fire protection. Thats why the m/80 was introduced, wich is made of Nomex. There might be quite a lot of them in storage at the wings, but they are only available to contracted personel.

:) If you are not a SwAF pilot the only way is to whine and nag till the staff at the supply store yield. And to get access there you need to be contracted (conscript/home guard/CO).

F-16 kom 1978 och J35 redan 1955 så det är kanske inte så rättvist att jämföra dem heller.... Jakfklygplan från samma tid var bl a MIG 21 och F-104 Starfighter mot vilka Draken stod sig väldigt bra i prestanda...

Det är F1 med en diamant under, troligtvis från någon flygdag i Västerås. Adam Gul är ju 3:e division på F1. Petter Röd är första div, F16.

It's probably standard J35 Draken issue flying gloves, made for the SwAF. If they are issued it should be either Flyghandske m/55 or m/80. My guess would be m/55.

Move to Sweden, apply for citizenship. Contact the National Service Administration and apply for military service at one of the SwAF wings. You will probably have like 1% chance to be recruited. If you get in, you may find out that the m/55 have been phased out and can no longer be found in store.

No I did'nt make the video. It is made by the staff at the since 20 years decomissioned AFB, F18. Im really not that interested in the Draken, it's just a beautiful fighter. One of many top notch creations come out of SAAB Aero
