Swedish roads in the countryside are a bit of a squeeze but not english tight but still... sometimes in the middle of "nowhere" they are highway width and straight... and then you realize aaah... it's a "wartime" runway! or a peacetime dragrace strip :-)

Congrats for Sweden, that's an awesome machine! And thank's for the cooperation so far with Brazil and Embraer. Who knows a super Jet can be developed by Saad and Embraer, together, in the future? :D

For all you brasilian people watching this video, you won't get this aircraft. You will get a much more upgraded, perfected version of it. This is most likely an Jas 39 A/B. The ones you'll get are the latest Jas 39 E/F.

Reminds me of use of the F-4 Phantom and A-7 in Germany. They were design as carrier capable aircraft from the get go, thus they were great at operations on the Autobahn. I hope the Gripen finds new markets, it's a great plane!

RAFALE IS could i say THE STEALTHIEST, The Stealthiest FROM THIS 3 EUROPEAN! BUT, but MAYBE, maybe TOO COMPLICATED, Too Complicated !?!? BUT, THE SWEDISH GRIPEN, The Swedish Gripen HAS, THE BEST, Has The Best 2 WAY (OR, or MULTIPLE) DATA LINK SYSTEM, MAYBE, maybe ALREADY 3 WAY OR, or 4 WAY (BUT, but I'm NOT not AN EXPERT, an Expert, BUT THE BEST 2 WAY DATA LINK SYSTEM AT LEAST = FOR SURE)

Things that you almost only can be seeing in movies today. Base 60/90, our Swedish aircraft landing at roadbases. in the current situation they're in "mothballed" but we all know they're discontinued operations, and too expensive to build or renovate them again. so here they are and waiting overgrowing or converted into 1 +2 roads with rails and steel-wire in the middle. those were the days!

I don't know about Gripens combat record, but I saw a interesting statistic. The Gripen had two early crashes that resulted in no fatalities. They have the best safety record of all the fighter jets. I'd feel more comfortable going up in this thing than some of the others.
@superfamilyallosauridae6505

No F-35 has ever crashed, even once. The two engine incidents had no fatalities either, and I'm not even sure if either were hull losses.

@superfamilyallosauridae6505
@superfamilyallosauridae6505 4 месяца назад
@@affegpus4195 Quite a few F-35s have crashed since I made this comment. That said, there are over a thousand F-35s delivered flying all over the planet in like 20 air forces. There have been 9 Gripen hull losses. Only 158 are actually in service currently. There have also been about 9 F-35 hull losses, out of well over a thousand aircraft in service currently. There's a few more accidents for each aircraft that did not result in hull loss or pilot death. Overall, I don't think we can really conclude Gripen is safer when F-35s are flying an order of magnitude more hours in a dozen more air forces than Gripen. F-35 passed 500,000 flight hours in 2022, Gripen passed 143,000 in 2010. If you multiplied the 2010 Gripen number by 3, you'd get 429,000 flight hours as a generous estimate of current Gripen fleet total flight hours. F-35 definitely has more time in the sky, both back in 2022 and especially now. F-35 is probably safer.

@jgpaquin
@jgpaquin 14 лет назад
The Gripen is flown to roads using the same technique as for runways. There are two landing modes - one at 12 degrees angle of attack (AOA) and one at 14 AOA which allows for a slower speed. The AOA will result in different speeds depending on the aircraft weight and configuration, but is around 140 knots. The aircraft automatically schedules the flaps, so the pilot does not select them. Speed brake is not used for landing.

In my opinion, what really sets it apart from the rest is the avionics and the incredibly short turn around. (under 10 minutes) What it lacks compared to other aircraft is range and inability to carry as much munitions. But thats not what it was designed for. However it´ll be interesting to see what the NG will bring.
@Stormwern
@Stormwern 12 лет назад
In peace time they use air bases naturally, but the first thing that happens when you go to war is the enemy sends 100 cruise missiles to destroy as many runways as they can, so it's a very useful feature.

@TFSMOTO The idea is that by dispursing the planes & having Stovl ability They can't suffer any Pearl harbor type first strikes. They are thus not tied down to a easy to kill base system. The road network is designed With straight sections & cut outs to support pop up basing.

@MIXMASTAPWN - mainly the idea that it can operate from slightly modified road sections. I don't think the weather (its not that cold, really :-) has anything to do with it. But as it is now, the decision will probably be based on which of the 3 contenders (JSF, F-18 Super Hornet and Gripen) will provide the Norwegian/Danish governments with the biggest return-order - "We'll buy your planes if you buy our stuff"... :-)

When I was lucky enough to live in 'Svealand' the population was about 7.75 million and Sweden had the 4rth largest air force after (in jet fighter numbers) after China (1rst), Russia (2nd), USA (3rd). As long as Saab is the choice of many foreign air forces they can stock pile these weapon platforms. And to think Sweden hands out the Nobel prize for various sciences. I have read they have the most advanced air force in the world. Considering who they know it is not hard to believe...

@klote2314 actually both the Russian and the US air forces consider both the Rafalé and the Gripen as semi-stealth fighters. They both actually have lower Heat/IR readings than that of the F-22 and they both have fairly small Radar signatures compared to that of the F-16, F-15, F-18, Su-27, MiG-29 or the MiG-35. I'm not sure of the Rafalé, but the radar signature of a JAS 39C is that of a person. A 39 NG will have that of a chicken. The F-22 has that of a small bird.

South Africa bought this, but I'm really not sure if it was a good idea. We could probably have gotten upgraded F16s off of the Americans and they could carry more weapons, as well as fly further. The easy maintenance and the STOL capabilities are the only things that really impressed me about the whole thing. Seriously, when are we going to need datalink and stealth tech vs any African countries?

No, but I did also kinda mean in a cost effective way. The Gripen is inexpensive compared to it's main rivals and would be an ideal aircraft in the RAF. And since Britain has already helped SAAB market the Gripen abroad, we will already be familiar with it's systems and weaponry. Look at the joint venture we have with the Meteor.

The flight control system has a low level control loop handling flight surfaces, and a high level control loop accepting commands from the stick. SAAB knew that if the pilot was moving the stick violently, the low level control loop would not get enough CPU cycles, but SAAB believed that this would never happen so the pilot was not informed. Watch crash videos, and you will notice that the plane is in level flight when it hits the ground. No pilot left to whip cream with the stick in turbulence!
