This dish reminds me a neighbor who became a very dear friend years ago. He introduced me to dim sum, he would stop by in the evening and say he had made a snack for us to try so we would go and drink tea and eat scallion pancakes (or whatever he had made). I remember them taking us to eat and ordering interesting things I had never tried (like walnut shrimp). So many wonderful memories of a really lovely man!
Those are the absolute best memories. Absolutely and totally. I got married in 1970 and moved to Connecticut. My husband was on submarines and I was from Florida. We rented 1/2 of upper floor of an older home in Norwich... which was about 15 miles from the submarine base in Groton. Out next-door neighbor was a lovely Jewish woman (important to let you know that she was Jewish) who worked for the Norwich newspaper as a reporter. She was a great reporter in her own way but her real specialty was cooking. At least to me anyway. (I was young, what did I know.) So she cooked. And she cooked. And what she introduced us to was beyond description. The only thing I couldn't handle was gefilte fish. Sorry folks. That's disgusting... but as we're talking about being simpler in our thinking and our actions this brought back such memories of Frieda Bruckner. And she grew beautiful beautiful African violets. Her side of the house had the best sunlight for that. That's what she always said. But in her process of teaching me about life, Jewish cooking, and the kindness of others, she really instilled the need for all of us women to get out there and do our part in the world. She worked at a small newspaper as I said, but she was kick butt and took no numbers. And for that I love and miss her...So you get these great memories of the food and the friendship and the education and the whole gestalt. Good deal
My all-time favorite! Never considered using pecans instead of walnuts..GENIUS! I never have walnuts on hand but always have pecans. Making this tomorrow for sure!
Just bought my first air fryer! I am most certainly going to try this recipe! It looks so delicious! Love your videos and Dude is charming and should never be left out of them!! Thanks for sharing with everyone Flo Lum!
The only time I get to eat this is at a Chinese banquet, but now I can it make anytime! (sprinkle toasted sesame on walnuts or pecans while hot, yum!). Thanks Flo!
I made this last night. It was the first thing I have ever made in my new air fryer. It turned out AMAZING! No need to go to the Chinese restaurant to order the walnut version of this anymore. I like this pecan version way better! Thanks for sharing this one!
I am so excited you did a video on Walnut Shrimp! I remember asking you, maybe a few years ago (??) if you would pretty please do one, even though it involved frying but maybe using the air fryer (this is my husband's favorite dish and I wanted to try and make it at home! So expensive at restaurants!!!! Thank you for sharing your technique. I will definitely give it a try!! Your son's comment was adorable! The highest compliment for a 5 year old to give his mommy chef!
Thanks, Grace! Happy to finally do a video for it. Hope your husband will enjoy it. To this day, my son still rates my meals every night. He’s 13 now. Maybe he’ll become a food critic. LOL
My mom always used a brown paper bag to bread/flour anything. So I use a large plastic bag, so quick and easy. Plus, the bag can be washed and used again.
That dish does look great and must be so delicious also and something I would love and Dude seem to be in Heaven and devouring those shrimps and enjoying all of it too.
I need to learn how to use chopsticks. I find so many other uses for them but I've never used him for eating. BUT, I have found that chopsticks are really good if you get something stuck in a funnel in the garage. Like dirt because you're planting something. And you can take a chopstick and poke it through the hole. I know that is really bad but I thought it would give you a smile ... these look so delicious...
I LOVE CRISPY. Then with sauce and nuts, all the different textures. AMAZING STUFF. Like Dude, I just tasted them 2 years ago. They are 16.00 per quarter lb.
I’ve never heard of this dish and it sounds like it shouldn’t go together, but I’ve never wanted to eat something more 😳 I love candied nuts and love a sweet and salty moment. I’m adding this to my must-make list!
If you want to try an alternative, try using xanthan gum. If you don't want the sugar, try truvia. Truvia is a sugar alternative for someone who cannot have sugar in their recipe.
One place in town has this! With pineapple ,candy nuts, and cherries oh my gosh! The prawns are huge and great ! Just $12.98! I guess I’ll try to order or make some !yeah!
Convection ovens have been around for a long time, but many people seem to be missing the 'C'-word from their vocabulary. I started using my Presto unit near the beginning of the '80s - before they corrected the temperature knob for the 75-degree baking temp-reduction. That unit finally expired after more than 30 years of highly-dependable service. Whoever got beyond the vocab issue popularized this great kitchen tool. My objection to the cutesy, round units is that I can't fit two layer-cake pans inside. Fortunately, KitchenAid and others have not abandoned the toaster-oven style. Since I, too, can't be bothered, I usually leave the temp set at 350F and watch the food's progress until I learn to time that recipe. Thanks for the great recipes, tips, and techniques!
I love my KitchenAid toaster oven for many things but very disappointed in the convection aspect of it. The Philips really does a great job circulating the air to really “fry” up the food.
I found a frozen meal kit for this. I wasn't happy with it. The sauce packet lacked something. Like you and Dude, I like Honey walnut shrimp. I'm going to try your recipe. As always, I love your recipes and videos.
They were prawns, and maybe there were eight, still skimpy. Also $14.95 not $14. They were really good though. I’m in SF and even out in the Excelsior things are expensive.
Hi, i just bought an airfryer and discovered your amazing channel, loved the recipes, need to try every single one. Did you stop making air fryer videos? If so, please dont..
What I do to make candied pecans is lightly drizzle honey over pecans in a deep and toss until nuts are completely covered. Then I sprinkle the coated nuts with super fine sugar and toss until all the nuts are covered with sugar, because of the honey sugar adheres to the nuts beautifully. Using a large strainer, shake the nuts to to remove the excess sugar. Grease a half sheet cookie pan and spray with non-stick spay. Wipe off the grease with paper towel and place the nuts in the sheet in single layer. Bake the nuts in a 200 degree F pre-heated oven and bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes, What makes the difference between Flo's procedure and mine is that the pecans gets a nice toasted sweet flavor. When done let cool, nuts won't stick together like Flo's. I admit that my process takes a lot of time but the flavor and texture stand out.
What an interesting dish! I wouldn't think to put shrimp and candied nuts together. Do you typically serve it with something like rice or noodles? Or just on it's own, like you did?
This is often served as a part of a 10 course meal in the restaurants. You can serve along multiple dishes, as an appy or main. If it’s your main, serve with rice and a veggie like these ones: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JJQD6TBQ_F0.html

Delicious! I remember eating this dish at large Chinese banquets like weddings or birthday parties. I would substitute the sugar with organic maple syrup though. But I wouldn't know what to substitute condensed milk because i would not use the rest of it after two spoons for the sauce. Flo - what would be a good substitute for condensed milk? Thanks!
I think the condensed milk is the authentic ingredient for this recipe and some sub honey or use both but I personally prefer the flavour of the condensed milk. Not sure what would be a good sub for it.
Flo, look up a "Breader Box" on Amazon. There's one by King Kooker that we got last year that is virtually indispensable. You use so much less flour, panko, corn/potato starch. However, the price on it right now is insane. Wait until the price is more reasonable.
Lol, I watched another video, they called for 1 1/2 cup of potato starch, why do they do that? It clearly only takes 1/2 cup or so....throw away a cup, NOT. Thank you ❤ you and Dude are awesome. Have a blessed day.
Ah... A saltbox woman. So am I. I have one for salt and one for my cracked pepper. And someone asked me how can I tell the difference in the two to not get them confused. Uh, okay.... And I said well, I bought them at Ross. And the one that I use for pepper has one little black wood spot in the wood on the top.. that's why it was not a lot of money. It was five dollars. . And that's how I can tell the difference. And I always set them up left is salt. Right is pepper. So if I ever come into the kitchen drunk I just look for the dot and I know it is pepper. And not the salt. See? Wasn't that easy Peezy. All of that to complement you on your saltboxes. I love those things. Peace.
I was curious.. adding some crushed red pepper flakes to the nuts after removing it from the heat to give this dish a spicy sweet taste. Flo have you ever done this?
Flo, love you and Dude, but you lost me on the candy nuts, not a fan of nuts, and with fish? aint gonna fly. Still love ya'all be well and eat what ya want :) Bw well and safe; carry on the good work
$28 for a meal at a fancy Chinese restaurant. Oh my god what we can do with $28 cooking at home. I would've felt guilty. It's really bad when you feel guilty eating a meal that cost that kind of money. So I am looking forward to seeing this.
