Are you holding back on your recipe with like your own secret ingredients does it need salt pepper honey nutmeg I don't know cardamon or whatever and can I prepare it all the way to putting the marshmallows on top freeze it for a week and then heat it up or maybe even leave the marshmallows off till the end and no one will know and I can be the hero of Thanksgiving

Hi! I'm currently making this and noticed that the video recipe is way different than the written recipe. In the video, the sweet potatoes are baked, while in the written one its boiled. I'm so confused at the moment

Can someone explain this to me please? Im not American, is this a dessert or a savory dish? I thought that a 'caserole' is a savory dish made in a deep dish like tuna caserole or pasta bake. But this looks like dessert!

It's frequently eaten with the meal but can definitely be eaten as a dessert -- and is done so quite a lot. It's wonderful leftover!

My mom makes this Recipe. She’s back home in her country this year. I called her today and asked her for her sweet potato marshmallow desert recipe that everyone always loves. I made this recipe for this year’s thanksgiving and everyone loved it! There were a few changes made to the recipe. I used half the amount of brown sugar and followed his pro tip on adding candied pecans (so worth doing). He has a separate recipe for that. I also lowered the temp to 350F and let the potato casserole bake first for 15 mins before topping it off with the marshmallows and pecans so they do not burn! We will definitely make this again next year. Thank you for the recipe and hope someone else finds this helpful! :)

I've enjoyed reading the comments by those who do not live in the US and have never celebrated Thanksgiving. We have a friend from Germany who visited us for Thanksgiving one year and decided before arriving that she hated the idea of pumpkin pie. She fell in love with it and took home two cans of pumpkin puree so that she could make it for her family who loved it too! Marshmallows, brown sugar and sweet potatoes are heavenly all year 'round. Thanks for another great recipe, John.

I’m Australian. I don’t understand it. Marshmallows and sugar on a vegetable??? That’s so weird. For the record, I’m freaked out by pumpkin pie too, but I have saved a butternut pumpkin to give it a try just so I can say it’s weird from experience. But this “casserole”? No. No way.

John this is where an Australian palate diverges from the American. I love you and your channel, but normally (like my friends) cut the sugar content of American recipes by about 1/4 to 1/3. I have tried this dish at Thanksgiving in US but toooo sweet for me. Also had difficulty with bread when I was living in the US, it is to our taste very sweet. My first tomato sandwich was a very strange experience!

I adore sweet potatoes, but I have never had them like that. These type of casseroles are not traditionnal where I'm from in Canada. I'm really curious to try, but I'm a little afraid to find it a bit too sweet. Still, those roasted marshmallows on top must be worth it, right?

I think it might be important to use mini marshmallows. I used regular sized ones and it was just way too much. Also, 25 minutes turned out to be a bit too long - the marshmallows came out black and brown. Could just be my oven (I know every oven is unique). Also, it was REALLY sweet. I removed the marshmallows, but it was still overwhelmingly sweet. I might use 1/2 cup of brown sugar next time instead of 3/4 cup

Watching your videos surprises me that the colors of vegetables and fruits vary from country to country. American sweet potatoes are orange. Japanese sweet potatoes are yellow or purple, and they are extremely sweet and delicious, so someday try using Japanese sweet potatoes.

John, your Mac & Cheese was a huge success! My five-year granddaughter didn’t want to eat anything else once she tasted it. It made me so happy! What would one do as a main dish? This sounds fascinating, but I'm facing a bit of imagination failure in terms of what could possibly go with this sweetness. Corn bread? ... Chicken drumsticks? Coffee? How far off am I? I literally have no clue, haha! Excited to try, though!
