This is the day I am usually most excited about all garden season! But not this year, late start to season, lost half my slips to freak frost, and the wettest summer ever! Two years ago I started growing sweet potatoes using the Ruth Stout method. Thank you all for watching my gardening videos, they are some of my favorite times to share with you all. My garden is my happy place! ♥

Finally!! So sorry it wasn’t as good a year for them like you had hoped! 😢 As you said they aren’t all bad and I know they will get eaten. I think it is good for us to see when things don’t go as planned and what we learn from those times. I know I’ve had some learning experiences this year myself. I still enjoyed seeing it!

I think that’s really good! This was my first year gardening and I was just happy to get anything 🤣. I planted cantaloupe that didn’t even germinate lol. The squash got attacked by vine borers so I only got one, but it was really nice. The tomatoes were not good, but I still got quite a bit. I just had to cut the bad parts off and freeze them. I got about fifty pounds of potatoes. The cabbage was my pride and joy. They were close to perfect. I got enough to share and I made enough sauerkraut to last me all winter, and I froze some for dinners. I just got this one woman one acre homestead a year ago, and it is so much work and so much fun. Thank you so much for all of your great videos because it’s a real resource for me. I live in northeastern Ontario so we have similar weather. Peace and love. ❤️

I’m looking at that harvest as a huge success. Life in the high desert of the southwest has challenges and not enough water is the first one. Currently canning sweet potatoes, a first for me but my favorite is absolutely a baked sweet potato.

I also canned my sweet potatoes last year and probably won't do again. I'm like you , like to bake them. I save my smaller potatoes to make slips for the following year.

This was my first year growing sweet potatoes. I grew them in 17 gallon totes and your sweet potatoes look much better than mine. Thankfully a friend dropped off a 50 lb bag straight from the field so I will have enough to make my mashed sweet potatoes for the freezer. Glad you were able to get more than you expected.

Last year the moles got a lot of my sweetpotoes. This year I did large grow bags & the vines trellised on the fence. I put 3 slips in each bag. It was a huge success! I used my own compost & the bags were full of sweet potatoes! Next year I'll do more.

Even with all that rain, you didn't have splitting potatoes so that was good! Not a horrible harvest. I harvested mine a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised with a good harvest. I've never had success with them before and wasn't sure I'd get one this year with the voles munching.

Hardly anything grew in my garden this year. Too much cold, not enough "spring" temps, too hot.. Then suddenly into fall and rain and cold again.. You had a lot more to harvest this year than I did. If harvest time comes around next year, just cover the crop with something to keep the rain out.. Might help with early frosts too. :)
@interestedobserver9352
@interestedobserver9352 2 года назад
Actually not a bad harvest at all! One good way of preserving I think is to cut in cubes and flash freeze in a single layer, once frozen put in freezer bags. Take them out and put directly in a hot oven. You basically get the same texture as baking a whole potato and you can use them in tacos or any hash etc. Happy next season!

I didn't get as many as I had hoped for either. God blessed me with some and I'll make it enough to get through winter. I have slips starting from last years harvest. A little love for them and next years crop will be a blessing too. I haven't bought any sweet potatoes in a few years. Free food is a definite gift from God. Blessings to you all. 🌻

At The Deep South Homestead they said that too big potatoes may get too firm, the small ones are excellent for stew, and the medium ones have the perfect taste. Not that I know anything about it, they're not grown here where I live:)))

Rachel, I must tell you about my Mom's frozen sweet potatoes. She baked them as normal and let them cool. Then she left them whole (so without peeling) and bagged them in Ziploc bags and stuck them in the freezer. I was still eating them 5 years later...when you got them and thawed, they were pretty wet. But just drain and peel and heat and OMG you talking about good. I promise you cannot tell that they are not fresh. Rachel, if nothing else, just try ONE bag for proof. I promise they are wonderful years later! Linda in Texas.

Mine were small last year but I figured it was I ate too many of the leaves. Plus I only had 2 buckets of them. This year I did not go crazy eating the leaves so I dug those same 2 buckets and they are much bigger this year yet I didn't get any more than last year lol. But some is better than none-like fishing isn't called catching. Gardening isn't called harvesting lol I will be putting them into a raised bed instead of my big 1/3 yard big buckets. But I ended up with over 35 squash.

Gorgeous soil from the straw bale gardens.May have to try it next year. I grew sweet potatoes in containers this year (zone5b) they needed at least another 2-4 weeks as they were very small but they did make wonderful french fries. I just washed the tiny ones, left the skin on and a little oil and salt.

Those long skinny ones are the best for starting your own slips! About 6-8 weeks before your planting date chop them into1 inch sections, let the ends dry for a couple days, then place in a shallow dish of soil. The foil baking dishes work great. Cover with an inch of soil, place in a sunny window, and keep moist. Hands down the most robust slips and the biggest yields, because the plant has an energy reserve to get them a head start.

Got some decent sweet potatoes, I did about the same. As for the straw bale garden, nice. The last few years we have been dumping all our grass clippings along the bank ( not in the water) of the canal on the back side of our property, mainly was to build up the bank to prevent any flooding. But I decided this year to try planting in it..it was amazing. I planted black bush beans. They did fantastic! The grass clipping look like your straw bales. So now I have and extra 180 feet of planting space..yipee.
