Here's the Osborne Brothers, from an old VHS tape I believe I got from my friend Russ Farmer, who produced and directed this-and many more-shows for Kentucky Educational Television's "Jubilee" series. The tape had some audio and video "dropouts" when I digitized it, so please forgive those lapses in what is otherwise KET's usual high-quality production.
This is from the Osbornes' Hyden, Kentucky "Homecoming" festival, from August, 2000. In the band at that time, in addition to Bobby Osborne (mandolin) and Sonny Osborne (banjo), were Shad Cobb (fiddle), Gene Wooten (dobro), Terry Smith (bass), and Dana Cupp (guitar). A great group!
The song "Sweet Sunny South" may date from the early minstrel era, perhaps around 1840 (per Charles Wolfe). Like "My Darling Allalee," these lyrics present the point of view of an aged slave who recalls his younger and happier days; several minstrel songs took this approach, apparently justifying the perspective of ex-slaves who were purportedly nostalgic about the days when they were still enslaved.
