Mbah Satinem, a 76-year-old Indonesian chef, is a local culinary legend who became famous thanks to the 2019 Netflix docuseries Street Food: Asia. Customers travel from all corners of the Indonesian island of Java to visit her stall in the city of Yogyakarta, often waiting more than an hour to try her sweet treats.

Nothing has changed, she's always been famous in the country even before Netflix. As you can see, only Indonesians can be seen lining up for her treats, not like suddenly there's an influx of foreigners coming to her corner after seeing the series.

I'm Indonesian but i don't understand any words in Javanese. So when Mbah Satinem talk in Javanese, the English subtitles actually help me a lot to understand what Mbah Satinem really say lol

Even many Javanese themselves (especially young people) don't really understand her Javanese, since she speaks Kromo Inggil, the highest and most polite form of Javanese. Kromo Inggil and Ngoko (the lowest form of Javanese) are like two completely different languages.

It's too bad that the translator paraphrased a lot of what she said. She was actually reenacting her conversation with her mother, but the translation only showed a shorter paraphrased version.

@@thanosal-titan yep kromo inggil is usually used when talking to people that's way older that you, but since I can't speak it(I can understand it though) when talking to elderly people I just use bahasa Indonesia..

@@thanosal-titan she actually speaks the mix between ngoko and kromo, when she tells what her mother talked to her she uses ngoko, but when she explains her story to reporter she speaks in kromo inggil (not pure kromo tho). I am not that fluent in kromo but I can understand her completely.

This snack brings back my childhood, in my region it is called kelanting, an assortment of sweets put together topped with grinded coconut and melted javanese sugar, lupis in this video is one of sweets usually found in kelanting

Everytime I took overnight train to come back to my hometown, I'd arrive at around 5:30 am then I'd stop at her traditional snacks stall to buy some Lopis and Ketan Bubuk (sticky rice with soy powder and shredded coconut). If I wanted to buy it on another day, I would usually leave home at 5:30-6:00 am so I would still get my share of her delicious snacks. 🥲 I wish her for a long healthy life ahead.

Something like this is heartwarming and breaking at the same time. she was old, no one seemed to continue her business selling traditional snacks if anything happened to her. the traditional snacks can be disappear anytime I know because this happened at a local market near me. The legendary snack seller there passed away and no one could replace her because no one knew how to do it I hope the best for Mbah Satinem.

They actually used two languages here. One is daily conversation in bahasa and other is Javanese, when mbak Satinem answered the questions, she used Javanese. Not all Indonesian understand Javanese, so yeah, subtitle help a lot

I'm a local there, yeah she's pretty famous already, so her price's are higher than other lupis seller. For first timer it's recommended to try this one, but after that you can look other seller that cheaper and doesn't have queue

Language that she said is "basa jawa krama" the highest jawa language. We all Javanese, especially young people and teen said in " basa jawa ngoko" the lower jawa language. The modern Javanese people now, mostly talk in ngoko. An elder talk in kromo like mbah... 😂

Just fyi, she didn't speak Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) in this video. Maybe even she doesn't understand it. Instead, she spoke high Javanese language which you use only when you respect someone alot. Many old people in Java don't understand Bahasa Indonesia, they still use Javanese language but young people ignore it.
