Mitch interviews jazz master Chick Corea, who visited Sweetwater for a workshop in celebration of our company being named the Moog Dealer of the Decade.
Moog sponsored the workshop with Corea, who took the stage before a capacity crowd in our Performance Theatre. Corea played and answered questions for nearly 2-1/2 hours, then signed autographs, met and talked with fans, and posed for photos after the show. Corea's gear included a vintage Rhodes electric piano (courtesy of Sweetwater's studios), a Moog Voyager XL, and a Moog Moogerfooger MF-104M analog delay. See them at the links below:

His music IQ was on a level most musicians can’t comprehend. RIP🐥🎹

I’ve been thinking about this. I think he’s the greatest all time at naturally combining all intense styles up to the late 70s, all that modern classical/jazz styles he can do. He doesn’t do the new-soul stuff, anything EDM or top 40, easy listening stuff etc., so he’s not overall the most versatile musician, but for quick thinking stuff he might be top dog. Cory Henry competes, but enough of his phrases feel pre-fab, like he isn’t QUITE just improvising at the intensity as chick. Cecil Taylor is more intense, but not anywhere near as versatile, and to my ears it doesn’t sound like he’s really quite hearing it all, like he’s attached to intense at the expense of it really coming from within.

Chick is just an unbelievable talent/genius/phenomenon/all of the above. His impact on Jazz and even mainstream music is just another aspect of him being a great human being. I admire how he reaches out to younger players and completes the circle, being inspired by those who grew up listening to his music. Check out his duet dvd (part of "Rendezvous in NY" dvd set) with Rubalcaba, un-freaking-believable!

He doesn't have a musical vocabulary. He just plays.
@kleinequietboykleinequietb7126
caca. he avoided answering the question, for some reason of discomfort or confusion but yes , he does have a musical vocabulary. It is fairly consistent. his ideas do not come from nowhere and nothing. they come from especially from his early listening exposure ( as a child learns to speak a language) and then how he shaped, yes, chose, his vocabulary later, more consciously. how he practiced. from the disciplines he chose to work on. . you d like to , but you can't get around it. It is limited. It is what he has played before, reconfigured. You can't play something (well) on the piano you haven't worked on. An Wild Bill style elbow smash on the piano required little practice maybe or what he did there with his right hand, plonk plonk plonk stab, but anything that requires precision, touch, nuance. It 's in and from his catalogue of riffs arpeggiations, scales, pieces he s played, whatever. he is limited by his technique, and "musical phrases and ideas he can render"., . It may be huge, but it is a vocabulary, a lexicon, it's not paint. it's not colors. it s not splash the canvas, you have to be able to play it. the variations, esp on a piano are not infinite , because of physical limitations. TECHNIQUE. you have to be able to play it to play it. Excuse me, i have to go work on polishing and expanding my vocab, so i have something worth saying next time out.
