I unabashedly love Apple’s education initiatives. It’s a type of accessibility. Of making technology more available and approachable to more and more people. And, yeah, sure, Apple will sell you an iPad for 300 bucks or an iPhone for 700 or a MacBook for 1100, or whatever, but Apple also makes tons of educational content available for free to people and schools, and training through curriculum and at Apple Retail Stores, all for everyone and all for free. As in, you don’t have to spend a dime on it.
It’s what I mean when I talk about the value of something being fundamentally different from the cost. It’s something that I think gets lost in the vast majority of coverage. And it’s why I’m incredibly grateful you all help me make videos like these to try and do something about it.

I think there is, it's just a matter of - like Adobe with Photoshop - figuring out exactly the right functionality and making it work seamlessly with the Mac version.

What I think? I think that for me, the Playgrounds feature already in Xcode suits my needs for quickly playing with code ideas well enough, but it's a welcome addition. I mostly code Java these days anyway, but I'm curious to see where Playgrounds goes and whether it'll increase more in the field of quick testing for existing developers, or stay focused as an educational tool. I'd like the former for quick tests on my iPad to become nicer to work with, especially code completion is annoyingly lacking in many ways I find, but the latter is probably better overall.

Question Rene, isn’t it the case that this only works on Catalina? Haven’t upgraded yet but I like that I don’t have to have an iPad to play in the playground. As always, greatly informative and enjoy your videos.

Epic Wayne But it hardly works on the Mac tho. The fans max out and it heats up like crazy, to the point where it’s almost impractical to use

Like everything.. this “everyone should be able to do something is both good and bad”. And there are many examples.. for example, it is not good that everyone nowadays has a degree in uni, is it..? Because suddenly, degrees are worth nothing.. and even if you don’t feel like it, you have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get one... just to be considered for a job.

Suraj I think that is not completely true. Apple may have a higher initial cost, but offers incredible value and resale value. My main computer still is a Mac Mini I bought in mid 2010. Before that it was a Mac Pro PowerPC machine from 2002 which still works (I am using its 2002 Cinema Display with my Mac Mini to this day as I work on my new record using GarageBand which is free). My parents still use their second generation iPad every day. They only late last year upgraded from their iPhone 4s. Do you know of any other technology company with that kind of life span? Everyone brings up expense and “built in obsolescence” when speaking of Apple, and I think that the former is only part of the story which doesn’t take into account value and that the later is 100% untrue.

@@GustavoLovato I agree with reale value, but i, from india have to pay twice the price for Apple products, and can't even develop without their computers. Programming is for everyone, if that fact is aligned with apples values, they must make sure it is also accesible for everyone.. ie android and windows people tooo, not just appleites

Anyone else having problems with heavy processor load when running Playgrounds? I run on a MacBook Air 2015 1,6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 with 8Gb ram. Proceccor usage goes up to 94% and fan is going mental!

Is it only me or does the App is so badly written that my 2018 MacBook Pro with the i5 constantly hits 99 degrees Celsius or above and the fans start to get really loud. Apart from that a very good idea to bring it to the Mac :)
