I was once in a small, ~12-person discussion-based class in undergrad, and somehow taylor swift came up. Someone went "now OBVIOUSLY we all know the lyrics to every Taylor swift song" and she was completely, unquestioningly, dead serious. She was so sure that every one of us in that room knew the words religiously. I almost crumbled to dust and obviously didn't DARE expose myself as someone who's never listened to Taylor swift lest my body be ripped to shreds for treason. The dread I've felt in that moment has seldom been matched

I honestly cannot see how Taylor Swift is a “Tortured Poet”. Like, most of her songs are about breakups which is an experience most people have felt atleast once in their life. To my knowledge, she wasn’t bullied or harassed, she doesn’t struggle with severe bouts of depression. I don’t think Swifities understand the pain a lot of actual tortured artists have went through; Elton John, Van Gogh, Osamu Dazai, Kurt Cobain. Like, you can enjoy her music but I feel like calling her some kind of “Tortured soul” is a bit of a stretch.

I was a swifty when I was between 9-12 years old. I saw Taylor Swift during her 1989 tour in 2015 and as an 11 year old- dude, I was so bored. I thought it was going to be this extravagant concert and sure you could say I was young and she was just starting out. But , again, she had already been HUGE at this point, and I see 6 year olds screaming at her concerts, dude. Needless to say i was so bored that I fell asleep as did another girl who was younger than me behind me. Even my uncle who's still a swifty fell asleep. However, I didn't see another concert until 2018 and that was when I saw Metallica and 14 year old me acted as if that was the equivalent of seeing God and it still was. Seeing One, Orion, and For Who the Bell Tolls, I think I peed. I remember this old man looking at me and my dad and he smiled, gave me a thumbs up and said "is this your first hard rock concert? You're gonna love it." So fucking sweet. I'll always remember that guy. The metal community is one of the nicest and best communities I've ever been apart of

I am an avid Swiftie, and an avid defender of pop music. I read Theodor Adorno AND Guy Debord, I'll have you know, I am not some rube bedazzled by the spectacle. Taylor has needed an editor since folklore/evermore (and now there is finally a NYT article agreeing with me). This album shows the worst of it, if all of this had been compressed into a single album, there are maybe 10-12 good tracks worth an album cut amongst the 30-some songs of the 'Anthology'. There is no one telling her "hey, maybe cut this, put a fast song here, write it this way" etc. and why would they? Of course people will buy whatever she produces, so why bother? She isn't wrong for releasing it. That is one of the perks of being that popular, you do get to do whatever you want. It happened with the Beatles. But there are reasons things are left on the cutting room floor. We see this a lot, where very successful/popular people/franchises no longer are bound by the restraint that led to the good art in the first place. The Bealtes, George Lucas and Star Wars, the Avatar guys and Korra, Halo, whatever. There can be some value in a record company or producer saying "hey, drop this, find another way to say this, you can't do that, do it this way instead" etc. Those kind of constraints can make art better and force the artist to adapt (of course, they can also be too restrictive and make it worse). It is one thing for her to release old songs, some of which belonged on an album ('Girl At Home') and some of which did not. But much of her latest albums are advance releases of what would otherwise be "vault tracks". And I suppose one of the perks of being more popular than Christ is getting people to read your slam poetry that would otherwise go unread. But it does not necessarily make for good art.
