While we're dusting off that cliche, does anyone want to bet that Astaire couldn't have put on a pair of pumps and done the lady's part too? No, I didn't think so.
@@daveconleyportfolio5192 No, he had the easy part . I’d like to have seen him dress in high heels ,and dance for kicks. There were a few actors who did dress as women . Jack Lemmon ,in some like it hot.
And here I sit, a 50 year old metal head who listens to russian grind core, with a big and happy grin on my face. I can't even say exactly what it is, but those old movies sometimes convey a feeling of easiness and happiness that even the most happy movies nowadays are missing.
I think the tune pick yourself up, is the reason for this the slightly peppy fun exciting tune, that's people generally whistled when they went to work, a timeless tune!
Yes, its it remarkable? both make it look like 'just a walk in the park'. Her book recounts the hours of practice, till her feet bled. FA was a tough taskmaster, wanted everything perfect > and he got it!!!
This is one of my favorite dance scenes with Fred and Ginger. His easy style and grace really shines through and Ginger has something of a graceful swagger, which she wields masterfully. They make everything look so smooth and easy, but it took tons of rehearsal to create their art, and I love it. Gosh, they were so talented. I can’t get enough. There’s just something absolutely incomparable about these two. I own all the movies and can’t count how many times I’ve seen them.
Thank you for noting that it took "tons of rehearsal". Reviews of musicians, dancers, any artists, tend to be "They were born with talent". Thank you. And thanks Fred and Ginger for all the hard work...🙂
I think Fred Astaire worked so well with his partners was because for many years from a very young age he worked with his sister, who was older than him and reckoned originally to be the more talented, so that he was really schooled in dancing with a female partner and showing her off, not just himself.
Critics gave credit to Fred for their dances, but it was Ginger that received standing ovations in arenas and stadiums across America, from Chicago and Houston to Boston and New York City. She was enormously popular 1934-1939, but even more so after she left the team and went solo. Ginger Rogers was the original rock star!!
Um wow. I am not gonna lie watching them he is a 10 and she is an 9. The way he dances it’s hard to believe anyone could have matched him he was just incredible. I don’t think people appreciate enough how good a shape you have to be in to dance like this for as long as they did especially her in high heels . It’s a real work out and they danced right through it no pauses no cgi. Amazing
In my next life I want to dance like GINGER ROGERS! I remember as a kid my mom watching all these types of movies! I'm so glad she exposed me to this generation. Remarkable dancing! They make it look so effortless!
read Ginger's autobiography - she knew the Gershwins when she was on Broadway too. George told all his friends that if he ever got married, she would have to be exactly like Ginger Rogers!
The way she leans into him at certain points just adds so much to their dance. It’s hard to put into words but their easy physicality, they seen ti anticipate each other, it makes watching them such an intense pleasure!😊
0:59 I love that little 5 step "stroll" they do, then with a snap, go right back into the routine. 1:50 is another cool part where their dancing is a perfectly timed "drum solo". Absolutely amazing. They make the current crop of "shuffle dancers" on RU-vid look like rank amateurs (which they are.)
Quite right! You know, way back then actors had to be able to sing, dance, drive an automobile, ride a horse, etc. Not like today when they can slur their lines in the name of “etnithity”. I’m pretty glad I live in Italy where everything is dubbed anyway!!
Anyone interested please watch the last scene of The Gay Divorcee. Amazing that Fred and Ginger danced over the breakfast table with Fred holding her up on the downside without a miss. Flawless execution and amazing athletic ability with both of them.
"Only Fred & Ginger.. can sweep effortlessly across a room... with snap, crackle, and pop!" "With that perfect partner, dance is so much more. So much more."
Watching this for the first time right now and even as a male I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS WOMAN DID NOT TAKE OFF HER HIGH HEELS BEFORE DANCING and I can't wait to see how this turns out....
I once heard a story that he made her practice so hard that her white shoes had her literal blood in them! I am 50, for reference and I grew up before dvd and even video!
Sproggs: If you don’t believe this as a male, would you believe it if you were female? There aren’t any other gender options so “pick yourself, dust yourself off and start all over again!”
Excellent use of black-and-white photography! Fred and Ginger's dark outfits stand out against the light dance floor and background, enhancing their movements and their presence.
First class ever, Il french and I DO appreciate that tap rare dancing from Fred Astaire, the greatest ever, He's the greatest, He's the best, He' s an enchantment for each human beeing. One only world, Bravo mister Astaire, you've done very well. What a class and a lesson for every dancer on earth. Bravo! Emmanuel from Paris
Did the USSR show Astaire Rogers films - or were they considered evil capitalist propaganda? The Lightness of every move , the Charm , the Magic they created inspired by Music in their every gesture! This is Virtuosity! This is Art!Thank you so much for sharing their incredible talent!!!
@@gratler This clip just starts right after Ginger Rogers 's boss just fired her from the dance instructor job & Astaire decides to dance this sequence to try & help her get her job back - This dance comes right after Astaire & Rogers sang a duet to "Pick Yourself Up" where Astaire pretended to be a klutz & kept falling down so the Rogers character told Fred to save his money & quit dancing lessons which was overheard by her boss so he fired her. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AGUsRGuZb6k.html
Go moms! My mom watched them, but never had to make me watch! I was equally fascinated with my mom's glee as she watched as I was with their dancing! I can still see her face now! Thanks for stiring up that old memory . 🤗
Millions of words have been written about how great this duo was. And rightfully so. But leave us not forget that they weren't just terrific dancers. Not by a long shot. Both were damn fine actors, too. And the cherry on the sundae? Ginger had such great gams, didn't she?
How the hell could Ginger Rogers dance so effortlessly and gracefully in high heel shoes? Couldn’t have been easy but she seems to be easily floating across the floor - floating on high heel shoes. That’s magic.
Quelle classe ses super danseurs heureusement qu'il reste des film d'époque pour voir ses merveilles que l'ont ne verra plus de nos jours ❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍
Fred Astair had great, beautiful, and highly talented dance partners, Ginger Rogers, Rita Haworth, Sid Charice, and others, too. They were all excellent.
