The most iconic floppy disk of all time must be either ST-01 with all of Karsten Obarski's original samples for the OG Soundtracker or the Doom shareware disk...as for the most fun, sourcing JPEGs from mIRC channels circa 1995. What a time to be alive.

I had a paper round after school and I kid you not, after delivering the last paper, one of the ways I could get home was across some wasteland where older lads had dug out hollows and made ramps and banked curves.

We had a very long drive growing up and used to play live Paper boy, we'd take turns going along on our BMX's while others drove RC cars at them and threw things at them, we timed each other and if you put a foot down you got time penalty. We never used a lawn mower but a rotary cultivator had to be avoided at one point 😂 (it wasn't running)

One of my outlook on emulators is that they should /only/ exist for past gen consoles, not current gen. Making emulators for current gen consoles is primarily going to create piracy. If there's a game you like the looks of on a current gen console, go buy it. If you don't have that current gen console for that game. buy the console too while you're at it.

Some people find it unacceptable to have other peoples moral qualms enforced upon them. I'm not saying whether I find any particular activity immoral or unethical, but I wouldn't want somebody else deciding for me. When it comes to the law, of course there are things which are illegal, and if you break the law you can be prosecuted.

A number of years ago i did a talk for ICPUG. A commodore pet user group. Where i used ogg vorbis to compress a 3 minute 15 second track. I think Savage Garden, onto a floppy disk. It sounded as good as FM radio and was in stereo. I used vorbis tools in Linux to crunch it down. I resampled to 32KHz then used variable bit rate capped at 40kb/s to fit on a disk. I think i might have used an odd format to get the 1.44M disk to 1.6M.

I loved playing paperboy, Amstrad cpc was my favorite 8 bit version, dispite it's lack of sound, although now I have the original arcade version, its rare i feel a desire to play it on any of my 8 bit machines.
@bazza5699
@bazza5699 4 месяца назад
I disagree that there is little point to owning a mister/emulator if you can't play the games. firstly the 8bit machines can be used for programming, secondly there is a wealth of public domain programs/utilities and games available. I take the point that official games are the main draw to using emulators, but it can't be denied they're useful for other things too..

Paperboy is a GREAT arcade game, have fond memories from playing it back then. You'll need the "special" controller 'tho. Never worked as a paperboy myself, but Tapper is also one of my favorites from the 80s, and I've vorked as that for 3 seasons at an outdoor restaurant. Dunno why I'm writing this.. 🙃 -M.R.

We used to call the wee plastic envelope that disks came in "disk condoms" because if the disc stayed in it then the disc couldn't be infected by a virus (okay, you couldn't do anything with it but we did find it funny).

Hi Neil, great video as always. Quick question when you mentioned/suggested that it was OK to back up your games, I thought this was illegal as well in UK law? I am not interested in dumping my switch games but only my older stuff such as PS2, PSP and around that era or earlier... Any advice or suggestions on this would be very helpful as I can only find contradicting views on this and when checking laws that's also not so clear either (for software), thanks very much.

Paperboy was/is my favourite arcade game. The handlebars made all the difference (and wow the abuse they used to take as we heaved back and pushed forward on them!) The ZX Spectrum port was a poor imitation and even the arcade-perfect Playstation port wasn't the same without the handlebars. (A nice bit of nostalgia at the time though.) I did indeed have a paper round as a child, every day except Sunday, some of the proceeds of which certainly made their way into the eponymous arcade machine. Really excited to see Paperboy content in the future.

You can make a starship enterprise out of a floppy disk. You can check a youtube video for that. ;) 1996 is also the year of a great adventure called "Toonstruck" with Christopher Lloyd, if you missed that one, definitely have a look. I actually didn't want to have 3D in my adventure or strategy games back then. They looked ugly back then and they certainly also aged worse than 2D games. Also an interesting question of definition as you were calling the Broken Sword Art "Pixelart". You can argue that it's not pixelart as it's not created as "normal" pixelart, it's more of a digitized drawing. Also the resolution was already higher than what you knew as pixelart before. Either way, I don't think due to these 2 aspects I don't think much will get lost if it's updated. Different to "real" 320x200 Pixelart, where basically the artist knew each pixel by it's name and placed it very conciously.

I'm confused by what is meant by the floppy disk music thing. Is this just an MP3 on a floppy or an actual audio track written to a floppy? And are we talking about 3½-inch floppys only here or raw audio (same as on a tape) on a 5¼-inch or 8-inch disk?

I don't think Nintendo have an issue with emulation itself as all retro mini consoles including Nintendo's use emulation. It's way the emulation software works that's the issue. When you start using a console's source code and key decryption etc that's when you get sued, especially when it's a current gen console. I think Nintendo need to look at how Zelda gets leaked online before release. The most likely scenario it someone in a retail warehouse stole a copy the game before they were legally allow to sell it and put the ROM file online.
@TheUAoB
@TheUAoB 4 месяца назад
I understand the common belief is it was leaked internally from Nintendo, as has happend with other recent releases. I hope, for consistency's sake Nintendo is going to go after people with modded Switchs since probably as many copies ended up running on real hardware as emulators.

The thing about music on floppies is that in the digital age, from a more artsy standpoint, releasing on vinyl has been played out for 15 years when indie labels started going back to it and even cassette tapes aren't that eye catching for 10 years or so, same with minidisc. Floppies are certainly more accessible as a way to stand out in a Techmoan kind of way without getting into expensive to duplicate stuff like CDC or reel to reel. Putting a mp3 on a floopy is just lazy attention-seeking, it's trivial to convert your stuff and make some arrangements to midi.

Played Paperboy when it came out but didn't enjoy the mechanic. It was very hard, unforgiving. On a MAME playthrough with infinite lives it still wasn't any better. One for it's time but not today. Same with Marble Madness and 720. These were designed to take your money as quickly as possible, not necessarily entertain. I didn't have a paper route but my father owned a newsagents so I was up early anyway sorting out the papers to be delivered.

Collecting money like that is the big NO-NO that Yuzu shouldn’t have done. Keep it free, full open-source, with no paid tiers and they would have been fine. Also with Dolphin, keep it off Steam; you’re right it becomes too mainstream then. Besides the whole beauty of the PC is that you can install anything from anywhere without hacking and without needing a centralized store to download software as “apps”. Its not hard but so many people these days are too lazy to surf the open web and just want these walled-garden app stores, a pity.

as we see the Yuza owners settled , but it demostrates Nintendo are probaly scared to go to court on this one, as it's highly likely they would lose , set a precedent and open the floodgates for future emulators. So their strategy is to scare these devs into submission , as this did'nt go to court, nothing has been established either way , but i feel Nintendo is always 1 defeat away from losing this war. The amount of emulators in theory is unlimited, all it takes is for one of them to be taken to court and win against Nintendo and that's it for Nintendo's aim

I think that if you make something you have a right to be paid for making it. HOWEVER I don't necessarily think that every person who plays a pirated game would have paid for it and therefore I don't necessarily think every pirated game means a lost sale. I don't think emulating Nintendo stuff or retro stuff equates to experiencing the game because Nintendo's controllers are part and parcel of the experience just as a CRT is to much of retro.

It unfortunately wasn't just Yuzu that was taken down, but also Citra, a 3DS emulator that shared many developers. Yuzu also wasn't the first Switch emulator scared into oblivion by Nintendo. Skyline on Android was phenomenal, but the devs chose to stop development due to fear. Not only was Yuzu taking donations on Patreon for "development", but I read they had paywalled fixes for games like Tears of the Kingdom. I personally don't own a switch, but i do own a few games. I liked the idea of the emulator on my Android tablet, because then i can play pretty much any game from any console from a single device, in bed before nodding off 😅 What Nintendo really need to do is figure out where their leak is coming from. The latest Mario was released online early too.

I guess your reply described the problem. Emulating current (or even early) games is not retro. But putting my pirate hat on for a min, I have a v1 unpatched Switch and have developed CFW apps, I have tried ROMs but I do buy the games I like. More demos would stop that.
@YosefASelim
@YosefASelim 4 месяца назад
@ScandalUK I disagree that emulating early games isn't retro. Technically the game itself isn't defined simply by the hardware it's running on. You could be running a Mega Drive emulator on a bleeding edge PC set-up and you would still be retro gaming. The only thing it isn't is 100% "authentic". Unless you mean "early" Switch titles, in which my point is moot 😅
@TheUAoB
@TheUAoB 4 месяца назад
@@ScandalUKThe Switch is retro. It's the same hardware as the NVidia Shield which released in 2015, 9 years ago! That's how the emulators became so "advanced" so quickly.

the Zelda 1 million people playing through priracy, does not however equate to lost sales. Many people have zero interest in buying a switch , but do wish to play Zelda. I would argue given the demands of switch emulation, you probaly have a beefy PC to play the latest Zelda via emulation , therefore that fact you don't have a switch is through choice not budget, therefore those 1 million people where never gonna buy a switch or zelda i don't think it's anything to do with Nintendo losing money, as i doubt they are losing much, it's more to do with control of the brand as we see with their YT , Streaming policies and the fact Nintendo always seems very authoritative, very behind on the prevaling culture, yet they get a pass unlike EA, Ubisoft Nintendo are not a pro consumer company, they are not a nice company , but Mario, Kirby, so everyone loves them
