Switching from down tube friction shifters to handlebar friction shifters

This road bike has had new high handlebars installed, so it's no longer easy to reach the down tube shifters. In comes Sunrace handlebar shifters.

I second this. Not every video needs a tutorial and I actually just needed to see what angle you set your shifters to cuz I’ve been having issues with mine rubbing the brake housing

These Sunrace friction shifters are amazing for what they cost! Of course they don’t compare to Suntour or Shimano metal friction but they do the job for $5 shifters.

Thank you for uploading this! I'm looking into doing the exact same mod to an old road bike with downtube shifters, although I haven't decided yet whether I want to put thumb or grip shifters. This vid helps me a lot with what parts I need and how to install the new shifters.

This video was very helpful. I am learning and building a CCM Concorde Road Bike which I picked up from Marketplace. Upgrading it now from downtube shifters to thumb friction shifters. Thank you for the great work and the video!! I was quite confused on how to upgrade!

Thanks. I picked up a vintage Schwinn Voyageur in minty original condition for touring. This might be the way to go instead of bar ends which bump my knees. I guess I can mount on the top of the drop bars ..

Nice, I might do this at some point, although I love the downtube shifters, its much easier with thumb shifting. The only downside I can see is more cables, but thats just visual

How difficult is the front derailleur cable tension adjustment? It looks like you didn't have to tweak much to get that to work, normally they can be fussy. Wonderfully simple approach to filming a pretty non-trivial topic (for beginners at least), thanks!

The good thing about friction is it really doesn’t need micro adjustments like indexed, you just move the shifter until the derailleur is in the right gear, and not touching the sides. As long as your limit screws are set correctly it’s pretty straightforward

I was actually looking for a way to mount the old style tube shifters to handlebars... The craftmanship on the old style levers is very nice eye candy for me, although that is a damn nice clicky sound you have on these shifters.

Confused about the comment regarding index shifting cable - I've ordered some friction thumb shifters, but they dont come with cables - are not the regular shifting cables good enough? Nothing seems to indicate specifically "index shifting" on the box of the shift cables. i'm new to bike building, so forgive if stupid question.

Yeah really it’s just less important for friction shifting, you can use shifter or brake cable bad there won’t be a noticeable difference

I mean they cost $4 so I doubt they’ve put much RND into them… customer hasn’t complained yet though. So I guess they still work

Since there’s no click, they don’t need to be as accurate as SIS indexed gears. A lot easier, just slower to shift, but not by much

The shifters? Do the click into each gear now? You’ll likely need indexed (SIS) shifter

Unfortunately, the cheapest Sunrace shifters are NOT durable. I put some on and they broke within 1 month.

Reach? Comfort? People adjust/switch handlebars from drop to flat bar so makes it harder to reach down tube.
