How to Install Downtube Shifters?

Downtube shifters are shift levers mounted on the downtube of the bicycle, if you don’t have shifter fittings (square baseplates) on your frame, you’ll then need to install the mount and baseplates to your frame.
1) Installation (1:33)
The installation is straight forward, screw in the shifters into the fittings.
Insert the shift cable into the hole and then attach it to the derailleur.
Make sure the cable is snug, adjust the tension with the barrel adjuster if necessary.
Do the same thing on the other side.
2) Limit Screws (3:12)
Set the low and high limit screws to the appropriate range so that the chain doesn’t fall off from either sides.
Same thing for the front derailleur.
3) Troubleshooting (4:13)
If the shift lever has become loose, that is because you have it overturned past the limit point. Simply tighten it again.
4) Index to Friction (4:44)
The shifter can be switched from Index to Friction by turning the knob to the desired position.

Just a helpful tip, you should make a video of how to install the left index shifter, I know I'm not the only one who had trouble figuring out you install it pointing straight down, then rotate it once screwed in. It wont ever sit parallel with the downtube and will stick up at a 20 degree angle when fully forward.

I had a more difficult task, because I'm changing to dowtube shifters on my Helliot, but the tube frame section is not circular (not even oval) so the brackets support don't fit. I had to buy a special screw, drill the frame and install it. Now I'm waiting for a Sontour Accushift levers set, I hope it fits well.

Thank you for this video. I just noticed this on vintage road bikes. Is this before shifters are place on handlebars?

Yes, downtube shifters were introduced before shifters on handlebars.

It's an old Shimano derailleur from the 90's.

this maybe a little late. Is it possible to install a downtube shifter if the downtube is not round and doesnt have a fitting?

I haven't seen any shape other than round. However it won't hurt to ask a reputable local bike shop if they know.

Yes, if you have a steel frame (I did it in my Helliot, search for it on RU-vid). Maybe, if you have an alloy one. If it's carbon, I will not recommend it, unless you find a way to reinforce the frame somehow, on the drilling zone. I saw somewhere a guy who had it, with Campagnolo (or Cannondale, I'm not sure) M5 adapters but they just didn't stand fixed, not even with loctite.

Those are downtube shifters.

@@xenos7583 Those are the guides for the shifting cables, that's the only place the cables will run through before they get to the derailleurs. Hope that helps.
