Sword Characters In Fighting Games

Sword fighters in Fighting Games are incredible to look into because of how much inspiration they take from around the world. If other fighters are based on different martial arts, these fighters have that on top of the layer of their weapons. Games like Soul Calibur and Samurai Shodown include a cast of weapon wielding characters, but others like Super Smash Bros and King of Fighters have to find ways around making their sword wielders too powerful against the rest of the cast.

While realism isn't needed in most fighting games I appreciate that Tusk from Killer Instinct and Warden from Samurai Shodown both swing their swords in a spinning motion since that's real technique of two handed swords, because those types of blades are heavier, by keeping a circular motion is easy to maintain momentum for the next attack and also make use of the longer range.

My favorite sword fighter in fighting games has to be Hakumen from BlazBlue. I love the brush stroke effect that some of his attacks produce and overall he’s just a really cool character to me. He is just the void, he is just the steel, he is just the sword. With blade in hand, he shall cleanse the sins of this world.
@matthewchandra7072
@matthewchandra7072 Год назад
Funnily enough, what stands out to me from Hakumen is that his sword strikes are relatively simple, swift and slow to recover (compared to someone like Ragna). They feel decisive and powerful, and they convey a lot of weight - and that's from a blade profile that doesn't even look very imposing. Hakumen strikes an interesting balance between being a greatsword (technically heavy sword but that's me mansplaining) archetype and a Samurai archetype and that combined with his poking/countering playstyle sell the idea of a fighter who waits patiently until he finds the right moment to strike - and when it happens, he goes all-in.

I just want to contend a small point you make in the video where you say that "rapiers and sabers are some of the lightest swords out there." Rapiers actually weighed about the same as a normal longsword. Rapiers nowadays have a reputation of being light because of the sport of fencing where the 'blade' must be light and flexible otherwise people would be getting injured far more often.

You earned my like just by mentioning the fact that Jeanne 'Janne' D'Arc is the first character who fights with a sword in fighting games. She is the first female character in a Neo Geo figthing game. She is also the first female knight and the first to use a whip sword, even before Ivy Valentine. Jeanne's sword is called 'Bastard Buster' World Heroes is an underrated franchise. ADK was pioneer in so many other things. Johnny Maximum is the first football player in fighting games (and he's cool unlike Brian Battler). Ryoko Izumo is the first grappler who is small and fast, she is also the first 'pure heroine' (before Nakoruru). Kim Dragon came before Fei Long. Bobby Nelson from Aggressors of Dark Kombat (another ADK game) is the first basketball player in a fighting game. Kisarah Westfield is the first female character who fights wearing a highschool uniform.

I'd love to see more Axe characters in fighting games myself. They're not all "Brute Smash" type of weapons, even the Dane Axes-- some nice movements could be made with them, and the most interesting use of an axe that i've seen in any fighting game, would be Soul Calibur's Astaroth, in that he makes use of hooking techniques with the axe head. Aside from Astaroth, more recently Hellish Quart also had an interesting inclusion using an axe: Yendrek, a shepherd or highwayman using a Fokos or Ciupaga, a "shepherd's axe". And he uses it with finesse. Ironically, considering the topic, that game is oft seen as "the swordfighter's fighting game".

Another type of sword user I remember here and there were the Duel Wielders. But I noticed some odd. Duel Wielders with swords are often the fast, multi-hitting attackers. I think it's kind of weird that there are so few longsword fencers in fighting games, it's probably the most famous sword type next to the katana, although a samurai, most of the time more than one, is almost guaranteed in a game based on swords but when it comes to western swords mostly they depict big fantasy weapons like Siegfried's Requiem rather than a longsword that's acually slightly lighter but longer than a katana. But even in other games, where there's both, like the Souls-games, where there's plenty of both weapons these seem to work slow like greatswords and not like longswords. The one that comes to mind is Geralt in SC6, who's just a guest character. I would like to see more of them, preferably with different stances ("Huten" in this case) and good parry mechanics, I think suit this versatile weapon very well.

Despite knowing all those shield-only characters, it never occurred to me that "shielders" was its own subarchetype though it makes a lot of sense. I think before I would've classed them all as brawlers or whatever other arc they best fit in, but I do acknowledge that they do have their own unique traits like they tend to be able to passively block during their attacks. I kinda want to think of Sword&Shield and Shield-only as separate subarcs though I'm not sure. I do think samurai and iaido characters are separate subarcs since samurai don't always have iaido stances and may have other gimmicks while iaido characters tend to focus solely on iaido. For example, I would consider Baiken, Yoshimitsu, Mitsurugi to be samurai but not iaido, while Johnny, and Yuzuriha are iaido not samurai. Setsuka I think is both samurai and iaido. Good thought provoking video.
@qmanchu

What's interesting about sword and shield characters is that they're really not the unique from what I could find. Even the ones from Soul Calibur. So it just made more sense to group all characters with shields together for the sake of the video. And I actually totally agree with you about the samurai vs iaido type

Another correction: two-handed swords didn't come about so that they could smash, rather they came about as a luxury, as body armor technology became advanced enough that using a shield was no longer needed, thus affording 2 hands for a weapon.

Great video that dives deep into oft forgotten FG design tropes, but I have to say one thing that has always bothered me is the portrayal of rapiers as light and agile, when they were historically neither. Rapiers often weigh as much, if not more than two handed longswords, and were long, leading to greater centripetal force at the end of the blade. What you (and most others, to be clear) are thinking of is the modern fencing epee, and related swords which are much much thinner than traditional rapiers, and consequently much lighter. Still a great video tho

Big reason is because this is a video about "fighting games with sword characters". I'm saving soul calibur for a different video because the way I see it, that's a "sword fighting game". While historical rapiers and sabers weren't light by any means, their modern fencing counterparts have blades that bend with much less resistance. I think a lot of fencer-type characters in fighting games take reference from sport fencing instead of historical fencing (mostly because historical fencing hasn't been popular in modern media until very recently), which is also why the archetype usually showcases quick successive thrusts and a disregard for concepts like point control and bindwork.

So, I have a question: do you not have any Soulcalibur games? You showed only one clip at the beginning and just...never showed or referenced anything from that series despite how prominently swords are featured in that game and the many styles it has, which also has every type you focused on here
@qmanchu
@qmanchu Год назад
I do have SC but the main reason I didn't include it was because I don't play them much. Haven't really touched the series since 3 and 6 wasn't my cup of tea. That said, Soul Calibur is different than the other games listed pretty much. Most of the footage I used, aside from Samsho, is from fighting games with sword characters. Soul Calibur is more like a sword fighting game. Sure there's characters with other types of weapons than swords but it's not like barehanded combat is prevalent in SC. So essentially, I'm saving SC for a different video in the future that's more about fighting games based solely around weapons. And I know I used Samsho, but disarming in those games is a huge factor of the gameplay that made me feel okay making an exception. Hope that helps address your concerns. Just trying to look out to the future to make sure I don't overlap ideas in this video that I want to present in the next one

@@qmanchu Not just Samurai Shodown, but you also included Guilty Gear, Blazblue and Persona 4 Arena, which were weapon-based fighters where barehanded characters were the minority. I mean I get what you were going for, but it was just somethin' buggin' me
@qmanchu
@qmanchu Год назад
@Kaihedgie granblue is weapon focused yeah, I'll give you that but I wouldn't call it a sword fighting game even still. The weapons work more like regular normals than weapons. And Guilty gear I dunno if I'd call it weapon focused lol. Guitars and coffins and swords that shoot flames and are shaped like lighters aren't rly the weapons I'm talking about here. I get it not rubbing you the right way but trust me, Soul Calibur will have its day on this channel.

Look up HEMA to learn how swords were actually used. Modern Olympic Fencing does not use raipers

Stronghoof from Them’s Fightin’ Herds has a shield in his 236c that is made out of literally ice, and Vetr can pick it up and walk across the stage with it, acting as a moving shield blocking attacks. Stronghoof also has a sword that he makes out of ice in his level 3 super

Damn I haven't actually seen him play yet! I'm still stuck on learning Texas. That sounds rly cool tho. Maybe sword conjurers for part 2 cuz there's lots of those lol

It's not exactly true that greatswords are a solution to well armoured enemies: if you want to deal with armour, blunt weapons are generally cheaper and better for the job. A sword is always primarily a weapon for cutting, whether it's half a metre or two metres long :)
@qmanchu
@qmanchu Год назад
Mostly I misspoke here. If the longswords were for plated armor, the solution was for poking from a distance into places between armor, not smashing. But the colossal greatswords we see were never really a thing and are obviously more of a conceptual thing since they'd be useless in combat lol
@cheesi
@cheesi Год назад
@@qmanchu Oh yeah smashing is very much _the vibe_ with a lot of greatswords in media and as much as I enjoy a more graceful huge sword I loveee the comically big clangy swords too :) great video, I just like adding context and talking about these things!

I really like the characters and their designs, but sword fighters always break a bit of the immersion for me. Especially if they're in a game with mostly hand to hand combat. In fact I don't even like it when there's a single guy with a blunt weapon, when everyone else is using their bare hands. It's like he isn't as good as the others, so he has to resort to weapons. So yeah, that breaks immersion for me, but not fireballs lol.
