So how about the evolution of the pronunciation of the W in this context - from German to Old English?

All Germanic languages used to have the W sound like in modern English. German never had it though as it’s not a very old language, although the language that German descends from (Irminonic) did have it. Dutch did used to have it as Old Dutch goes back to the early middle ages.
