This video covers some of the swords on display in Dublin's National History museum. It does not cover the full history of swords in Ireland but those that may have been used during the time of the Norman invasions in the late 1100's. Reference is given to "swordsmanship" but in my experience of fencing against female fencers, I have found them to be equally skilled and offering little quarter too!

Greetings from Ireland! Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland. This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about thier "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, normans, vikings and Irish warriors, please like and subscribe, I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.

There's something about swords that I just love, the beauty in something so deadly, the amazing craftsmanship and all that hard work that went into forging them, thanks for another quality vlog, as always you have my gratitude.

Very interesting, how we went from swords and lances at the beginning of the first world war to tanks at the end, and even up until the 1940s Japanese officers would carry swords into battle, on a side note I believe more katanas are in the US then Japan, having been brought back as war trophies after WW2. Enjoyable video.

Generally speaking, ferrous metal doesn't last well in the British Isles.

Fencing might not be huge in Ireland these days yet from the late 1600s till the mid 18th century it was freaking all the rage at all levels, especially as the weapon of choice to fight duels & engage in other violent showdowns (preferred by both Protestants & Catholics). And the Irish seemingly had this natural knack for such fancy yet deadly swordplay, as they not only excelled at it though were also some of the most feared, skillful & fearsome swordsmen in all of Europe, renowned as lethal experts, swashbuckling maniacs, fierce face stabbers & formidably proficient practitioners with short swords & rapiers. It was almost as though swordfighting was hardwired into their DNA, as the Irish, along with their Scots Highland cousins, were basically the Russian Cossacks of Western Europe!
