I saw this production on stage in the 80's while going through a very challenging time. Cinderella's entrance into the Ball, the flashing bulbs like stars, mysterious darkness, the sublime music - it was transporting then and a reminder now how beauty can heal the soul. Thank you for sharing this with us!
This has always been my favorite Ballet! Rudolf's choreography, well ahead of his time, and the exquisite Sylvie Guillem makes ballet look effortless, he precision and grace and versatility, even tap dancing here way into being the best ballerina of all time.
I will never forget an article featuring Syvie in a 1980's Interview magazine. One comment regarding her was: " the one dancer no company can afford to lose".
when she left the Opera de Paris for the Royal Opera in London (double treason), the French minister of culture, Jack Lang was shout out at the House of Representatives, it was almost a state matter !
@@blue14428 it was a joke ! I understand why she left ....POB rules are very strict and even now some Etoiles are leaving like François Alu recently, but it didn't make a big fuss like Sylvie Guillem's departure. !
I watched this magnificent ballet again from start to finish, this is quintessential ballet theater. Rudolph Nureyev was an amazing choreographer with unique detail to music, timing and characterization which are unpredictable here. How wonderful he made this Cinderella for the young superstar in the making, Sylvie Guillem. Exquisite.
This is the very first time I saw Sylvie on tape. I could not believe at what I was seeing. Now after so many years I understand the humor, the spirituality, the greatness of both Nureyev and the company and of course how immense was Sylvie's talent not only technical and physical but also what a great theatrical instinctive and natural approach she had when impersonating a charachter.
The first time I saw Sylvie Guillem was this very ballet shown on tv one christmas circa 1985. She is totally awe inspiring. What feet, what arms!!! Nuryev's choreography is amazing too

Seeing the last scene 1:52:50 when Nureyef and Sylvie danced together, I realized that he made this ballet because he wanted to dance with her in his last minute of his life.... I mean Sylvie is such a special ballerina. Just splendid.
This is lovely!, the choreography by the great Rudolf Nureyev is wonderful, fabulous!, I love to see Rudy dancing with his cigar. Many thanks for sharing it!
I was actually lucky to dance this version (the lead role). Rudolf was still alive and still dancing the same role. Can't even remember how many times he stuck that darn cigar in my eye in act three...
Brilliant original choreography and interpretation by Nureyev ...whole idea .. love it so much ..wish it was available in better quality ...always low quality film back then :-(((
This shit is ridiculous! I feel very honored to be human right now, These beings have mastered their craft in such a way that is out of this world magical. And not to mention their connection to the music. TAKE NOTE KIDS!
Deaf defining beauty unlike anything I seen before. I chance of justice system working without flaw or doubt. A kings ransom. Good to the last drop. I believe justice was served.
Retirement as theme in this play. Holding on to those prescience years old age and the like. Unlikely illness tramp under or feet. To stones the return unknown of any kind but our kind. Finest photographs leaves us in mystery.
Last time I checked it was not available on DVD, although another performance by the Paris Opera Ballet (without Sylvie!) is. Go figure. I'll keep googling it every once in a while. They have to release it one of these days!
If this is really all Rudy's choreography, I take back every unkind word I've ever had for his choreography being redundant and having nothing to do with the music! Although the beginning of the second act drags a little and feels unfocused, once the main characters enter, it picks up. Guillem is magic, and what he's done with the choreo of the step-sisters (plus their presentation) is hilarious and has most of my joints aching in sympathy (I think it's Guerin at 1:02? Where she's briefly standing sort of in 5th on point but she's bearing her weight *on* her arches?) You have to really be good to dance this badly without killing your body. I have to admit I didn't quite follow the sense of juxtaposing Guillem's sweet Charlie Chaplin impersonation (she taps and soft-shoes! I swear she can do anything!) with 2 fairies followed by Groucho Marx followed by two more fairies, but I liked the way he moved all four groups around the stage. And wasn't this broadcast as a Christmas special by a lot of PBS stations right around the time home video was becoming a thing? I missed it then and have always wanted to see it. Thanks for posting!
It seems that many of us have been waiting to see this ballet again after many years. But it still doesn't seem to be available on DVD (or VHS for that matter). I don't understand why since it was filmed for television and it is such a beautiful performance with Sylvie Guillem and even the pleasure of seeing Nureyev. Has anyone found it?
Sadly no ..I just have a poor vhs recording ..so grainy ..it is sad so many great performances were not recorded ..or recorded then locked up and hidden .. very frustrating disappointing ...upsetting ... :-((
oi como q será q ela fez para entra nesse negócio de dança peça,,, pq meu amigo primo queria porque é o sonho dele mais o pai dele não vai pagar,,,, tem de graça? upp
This is a wonderful version indeed. What do you mean by "a real show"? This was performed by the Paris Opera Ballet, and filmed for television. I think it's available on DVD.
Il balletto e bellissiimo,.. I ballerini sono ecezionali,... ma la musica di Prokofiev.., mah..purtroppo mi stanca,.. non la sento benefica per me ! "Il tocco" di Noureev e sublime , come sempre... 💞🚀💖
I don't think this has anything to do with Ashton (in part because his two step-sisters are guys in drag) but I'm wondering if he might have adapted some of the choreography the Bolshoi used to use (so Grigorovich?)
Green beans and tomatoes - Richard Nixon standby me or outsiders pony boy try to last as long as you can on this one televised in 1960 who would believe that the president watch this movie before the cast was even born.
Thank you.. Many thoughts: Sylviie is well cast, and she and the Prince dance beautifully. He's a handsome guy, but could act a bit more; she acts well. The stepmother-stepsisters seem bickering, but not nasty nor with strong personalities.Doing the fairy godparent as a guy. somehow lacks glamour and doesn't pull him out from the crowd of other guys on the stage, nor add romance. I like the choreography, but I don't think the film era idea helps.
Yeah, I was kind of wondering why he kept the fairy variations as fairies of the seasons when Cinderella has just done that charming Charlie Chaplin moment, the fairy godmother is the film director and the fairy variations are interrupted by someone portraying Groucho Marx. I'm still in the middle of act 2 but felt it dragged till the step-sisters showed up. Guerin and Loudieres are pretty hilarious, though.
