In this first part in my video essay-director's retrospective on Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight Trilogy', I unpack the symbolic power of the Batman character and showcase how Nolan utilized this essence to construct the most evocative iteration of the dark knight's origin story to date (with BATMAN BEGINS)...

I love how Nolan started Bruce's journey with him falling into a circular hole, which he climbs from in the Dark Night Returns. The hole has grown to an incredible size, but so has Bruce's strength. In the end the little boy has confronted his fears and understands that fear is not something to let yourself to be hold back, but something that loses it's power if you turn your back to it.
@yhavinmiles
@yhavinmiles 2 года назад
reminds me of how his fear of the opera bats and their theatricality is turnt into his first real outing as the batman at the docks, they're very similar and is a clear example of that fear, specifically the one that got his parents killed being turnt into a weapon.

Why do we fall? Hi everyone, hope you enjoyed this experimental analysis-director’s retrospective. It builds on the insights from a video which I edited for the ‘Jonathan Pageau’ channel last year. So if you want to know more about how the story of Adam and Eve links to the Batman, go check that one out (link in the description). I had initially wanted to do all three movies in one video, but I felt like I had to cut out too much depth in order to avoid an information overload. So, depending on the reception on this one, I’ll make a part 2 and possibly a part 3. PS: Warner Bros., please don't block this video again:) - Thomas

"Some men just want to make great video essays on great superhero movies." Batman Begins is an incredible character journey and an incredible telling of Batman's comic-book history. The movie literally starts with an iconic image from one of Batman's most influential stories (The Man Who Falls) and ends the same way (Year One). And it popularized many obscure Batman characters that even many comic fans didn't know existed. I started reading Batman comics three years prior to first seeing Batman Begins; somewhere around 2001-2002. I was pretty much in loop with most things about Batman and his history, but even I was not aware of characters like Lucius Fox. Since then he became one of my favorite supporting characters in Batman's universe. That's what a great adaptation does: makes you a fan of characters you didn't know about beforehand.

Batman's world is definitely complex and what struck me the most was the investigation of the character and the forces that drive him at their core. The trilogy is also notable because Batman, even with his good intentions and ever improving understanding of the world and his own self is never shown to be - sufficient. There is always something more he has to learn - something more he has to become.

The Avengers was that great of a movie. Just like Endgame wasn't that great. The reason they were popular is there was build up to them so they felt more impactful than they really were. As stand-alone films though, they aren't very good. All 3 of the Nolan Batman films are better films by far.

Batman is the perfect story telling the philosophy of Carl Jung and his explanation of the shadow self, especially when introducing The Joker as his antithesis, and Catwoman as his Anima. It was genius way to tell the story, yet it seems that most dont even know why the story is so relatable for the, lol. This was such an amazing essay, so many analogies and fancy terminologies for this story dissection, feels like if LikeStoriesOfOld made a video on Batman, and this was way more poetic than the usual video analysis about Batman, alot of subject matter and references which will no doubt fly right over most zoomers heads. Many religious analogies and comparisons to other films, and you being such a ascended film buff of course you're going to have a greater mastery of the english vocabulary than your ordinary Comic Book Geek. Seriously, the amount of editing for perfect visuals is baffling, and the writing felt so natural almost as if you were simply translating the film's intentions and meanings to the audience , in my opinion your interpretation was that spot on, or at least your presentation made it seem so. Great Video and Fantastic Essay. godspeed

The Adam & Eve metaphor is so heavily dependant on omitting such a vast amount of detail from the source material, whilst also requiring creative reinterpretation of the details you chose to include. You could have picked any other story where a character starts in one place, some stuff happens, then they descend to another place (ie literally every story ever told), and made it sound less forced.

Great Video and analysis of the character using Jung`s concept of the shadow and the Anima, i could not sense any information overload on the contrary there is more to be told, i cant wait to see part two ( the dark knight ) i guess it would be a longer video because the Joker is a very deep character that represents not only 1 man`s shadow but the collective shadow of Gotham city, which tests the Hero`s personality to its core ! Heath Ledger simply personified the Trickster Figure ( Archetype ) in this movie.

"Batman doesn't have any superpowers other than extraordinary wealth. In that sense, he's extremely relatable." Yeah, everyone can relate to being a billionaire and how hard it is to not struggle with everyday life.

Will, not wealth. Will. And even if it was wealth, thats still more relatable than shooting lazers from his eyes.

Theres a reason why the videogame of batman begins was considered the best game based on a movie and the best batman game ever made. And it still holds up. Everything on this project was dedicated to quality. And because they knew the games to TDK and TDKR could not hold up with this level of quality, they turned in another direction with the games and so we were blessed with the arkham games. If you think about it, Joel Schumachers horrible movies are the reason why WB was forced to give creative freedom to the producers to reincarnate batman. So, i never thought i would say this but... from the bottom of my heart, thank you, joel. Thank you
