The Dark Knight: "Identity Secrets" - Analysis and Explanation

Revealing the powerful use of theme that runs throughout the movie and how it affects each of the characters, the Batman's journey, and the climax of the film.
Do I need to say SPOILERS for 'The Dark Knight'? Well. There is. Obviously. Also for 'Batman Begins' and 'The Dark Knight Rises'.
Taking a troubled man in a mask, director Christopher Nolan turned a simple comic-book conceit into a tightly woven exploration of one his personal interests; identity.
From the idea of who we are, to what we choose to be, the film expands into a discussion on morality, self-belief, imagery, the power of symbolism, and what makes a true hero.
Layer by layer I delve into the different stories being told, and the choice of imagery, setting, and dialogue to understand what the film is about.
'Digging Deeper' is a series taking a serious look (for us) at films, themes, characters, and various aspects of filmmaking, writing, directing, and more.
If you have any comments, or ideas, please let us know in the comments!
Did you find the deliberate mistake in the video?

Also significant is that the Joker cries at the end when the SWAT team is arriving to arrest him. It can be interpreted to mean that the Joker is finally revealed to be not simply an "evil clown" but a broken yet very dangerous man with a twisted worldview that only pretends to be crazy to hide his inner self. Which fits very well with what you explained.

This movie has got to be one of the most analyzed, talked about, and most dissected pieces of film I've ever seen. Even more analysed and filled with symbolism than infinity war if you ask me. The dark knight is truly one of the best superhero movies ever and one of the best movies ever made.
@murdockfiles9406
@murdockfiles9406 7 лет назад
Great analysis! A movie that got so much praise everybody started to call it overrated. But now that everyone calls it overrated it's easier to go back and see how well crafted of a story this film really is. It's intense and exciting, but there's a lot of depth to these characters. That's a rare combination for a superhero film, and shouldn't be called overrated for it.

As Batman in Crisis on Infinite Earths said, "There is a difference between you and me. We both looked into the abyss, but when it looked back at us, you blinked." This, I feel, highlights the similarities and differences between the Joker and Batman that you highlighted in this video. Great analysis by the way.
@RantandBollox
@RantandBollox 7 лет назад
Thanks very much. The contrast with the two of them has always been very important, precisely because it is a hairs breath of difference between them.
@SoulOfSparta
@SoulOfSparta 7 лет назад
The quote is actually from the "Crisis on Two Earths" animated film and it was referring to Owlman, but your point still stands relatively well. Both characters had one bad day that changed who they were, but Batman used his tragedy to make him stronger whilst Joker allowed it to drive him insane. When the abyss looked back, he blinked.
@theamazingspider-man9792
@theamazingspider-man9792 7 лет назад
SoulOfSparta Thanks for the film title correction, there are too many DC crises with too similar names, I get them confused a lot. It's irrelevant that Batman is saying it to Owlman, I thought the quote was applicable to this scenario regardless.
@SoulOfSparta
@SoulOfSparta 7 лет назад
Oh it definitely is, but in a slightly different way. When Batman says it to Owlman it isn't so much about the creation of these two people, but rather the toll that their endless crusade for justice had on them. The hole in things (to quote Morrison) drove Owlman to believe that the endlessness of not only their crusade, but also existence as a whole, left only one logical choice: end everything. The hole in both of these characters' lives was created both literally and metaphorically by the bullets that cut down their parents, hence the crusade for justice (to give the world back the meaning they lost that night) and the subsequent realization that this hole can never be truly filled. Thomas (Owlman) blinks in the gaze of this abyss and starts crossing the lines that Bruce refuses to. This new rule-less, ruthless man still can't fill the hole, and realizes that no choice he makes can ever have any real impact whatsoever. The hole can never be filled, and the rest is history. Sorry if I rambled or didn't explain any of that clearly, and again, this is all up for interpretation. I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to discuss the central theme of Morrison's run on the character (possibly the greatest of all time). Anyways, I'll end with one of the best quotes from his epic: “I looked into that hole in things over and over again until it hurt, Jim… and you know what I found in there? Nothing… and a space big enough to hold everything.” This is what separates Batman from Owlman, Joker, etc.

If Zack Snyder had a tenth of your understanding of thematically satisfying elements, then his DC movies would've actually been interesting. As it is, they're boring as shit as they lack substance and any ability to connect the viewer emotionally to any characters.

I really enjoyed this analysis because you didn't choose to focus on any of the one elements that make this movie great, but instead chose to focus on the whole and how everything came together pretty seamlessly. I know it's hard to do that because the tendency when tackling TDK is to focus on Ledger's brilliant performance, the Joker and the movie as a deconstruction of the superhero genre what with the hero basically losing and his love interest being killed, to name just a few. Big kudos for this one, love your channel (and the accent) and hope to see you tackling BB and TDKR someday.

Thank you for this fantastic in-depth analysis of the Dark Knight. I would like to add how Harvey Dent is seen as the "Knight of Light" by the end of the film this is completely flip by his identity being changed he in a sense becomes the "Dark Knight." Harvey Dent no longer stands for "the good" but and his entire identity is changed what is fair and turns into what Bruce Wayne might have become if he had shot Schlitz. Pretty neat stuff!

This video and the one you made on "Why Supervillains Are Terrible" are so good you've helped me perfect my own superhero series I'm making. I have so many good stories to tell about the hero and his list of villains but I had issues on what made the villains worthy of being a good threat to my hero. I understand now that it's about the theme of the hero and the villain. My hero will always represent hope whereas each villain represents different negative themes such as corruption, desperation, jealousy, spite, etc. Keep up the in-depth story-telling. Also while it may not necessarily be a superhero story, I always thought the Terminator series (1 & 2 that is) as good storytelling. T1's Kyle Reese is like Batman, a human who can take some serious injuries and keep going to protect someone, and T2's Terminator is like Superman, a tank of a man performing insanely successful stunts to protect someone. Think you can do a video on that?
