Great interview..I was a Mod around this time and became a scooter boy/ Skinhead /Punk type whatever people called me (Amongst other things) The whole culture of what these bands stood for sung about meant something to ya. The Jam, Clash, Purple Hearts, Specials , 4 Skins even liked The Stray Cats 👀. I saw Green Days first London gig cost me 6 pounds and the place was half full and Rancid as well. Never grew out of that attitude n energy. All the best from North London

Symond is a legend, met him a few times always cool. Brighton and Bristol were the two hotbeds for skinhead back in the day, Bristol because of st pauls which had a large west Indian population so had reggae/dub clubs and carnivals etc. It's why we ended up with bands like massive attack out of Bristol because punk attitude meets reggae/soul culture. I always found it amazing it was the parody oi band hard skin actually did more for oi revival than some legit bands.

I'm fairly stoked to see a couple of fellas that at a glance I can see are round the same age as I am talking about the scene back in the day. On the one hand, when I see a genuine, legit punk rock kid nowadays (not a fashion punks) it does my heart good. On the other, I can't help but say to myself "You weren't there. Everything that you're doing, we've already done. Everything that you're listening to is descended from the bands that we listened to. You weren't there." The question is 40 yrs from now,are these kids still going to be a punk? Will you still be an angry young man or woman? Anyway thanks fellas.
@thepunkrockreview
@thepunkrockreview 2 месяца назад
THANK YOU For watching! In my personal opinion, just bc it's been done and just bc someone wasn't there, doesn't mean they're not punk. Punk isn't something you own, it's something you are. I mean, I wasn't there if it was outside Houston, and I don't consider myself a poser. I never claim to be a skinhead, and I listen to mostly oi! these days and put out records for oi! bands. Its about being true to who you really are. Now, I see plenty of "posers" or naive kids. Costume types. They're whatever, tho, most of them are harmless. But yes, punk will always be around and real as long as there's something to be angry about and rebel against.
@user-em2pe3rf4h
@user-em2pe3rf4h 2 месяца назад
@@thepunkrockreview Of course I agree with you. The divine spark of chaos belongs to everyone except the phoney. What I meant by you weren't there is that the people who weren't there because they hadn't been born or they were kind of orbiting the scene...we were there when the music the scene the rebellion....it was all brand new. Everything. Someday I'll be able to die with a satisfied mind because I was there and in a miniscule way helped give birth to the scene. Being there for the beginning is something that cannot be bought and I damn sure would never sell it. It is my Valhalla.

Hi very enjoyable conversation to watch. Keep up the good work! I was a skinhead from 2000 till 2004 and I could not fully understand what it would have been like to be a skinhead in 70s and 80s. However there were a lot of turncoats in the scene early 00s. Gravitating more towards rightwing politics because it was more badass and masculine away from the too openminded and positive skins and punks unity. I temporarily also took a more pc stance towards this arrogant attititude of subcultural people empowered by the popularity in the scene, behaving like dicks. By 04 there was little change. Racist skins claiming the subculture as theirs, holding on to their negative views. And I don't blame them as a grown up person, it's all part of your life what happens to you and what you do with it. I don't see people as being racist or non racist but as negative or positive, complaining all the time attributing their problems to others or taking action for the better. Now it's great to see the skinhead subculture has been reclaimed by being positive and connecting with each other. Cheers
