Such a delicate little gift. One of my conures passed away and I am so confused. I did notice he was throwing up yesterday on the playground for the first time. Next time an unnatural sign of behavior is going to vet from now on.
My cockatiel started sneezing/ coughing up blood. He got spooked when i closed the cage door and started sneezing blood. He had no simptoms or anything. Hes been breathing heavy and fast after it happened, idk if hes just exhausted or... please help, im very worried
Donna is a great! and so is Kingsley her gorgeous female King Parrot. Where live in wild where I reside in Melbourne, Australia. The males have beautiful distinctive Red head and chest, and the girls, like Kingsley are cheeky and sweet natured. I love them to bits!

@@chicken5761 thank so much I thought my Quaker is sick bc he is really puffed up and really warm.but he also looks linda tired a bit throughout the day
When my Cockatiel was diagnosed with lung cancer he had a hard time breathing, but his beak was not open. He was breathing so hard that he was rocking. The Vet thought it was strange that his beak was not open. He still preened himself. He did not want to eat though. He was very weak so I had to carry him in my hands. He did not want to be in a cage, he only wanted to be with me. He sat with me for the last three days and he slept with us in a travel cage lined with a soft blanket because he wanted to be close with us. When we had him euthanized the Vet said that he would have only had a couple days left. That was 5 months ago. We are still heart broken.
I have no Avian Vets near me, I usually do “remedies” so my birds won’t get sick The one I use the most is sprinkling a little bit of cinnamon powder in the birds’ water. Sometimes I’ll do a tiny bit of baking soda on the birds water as well. I give them mint since it also has medicinal properties
@@sweetdeception5185 I tried home remedies and my cockatiels got better n now happy enjoying themselves .. I gave them fresh mint and coriander leaves .. they love these herbs ..also gave them bird vit. Diluted in their food . But avian vet is essential .. in case of serious matter. I hope everyone is safe n healthy ❤️🙏❤️

My Lovebird that i have saved from a cat 3 years ago has a problem with walking and multiple symptoms said in this video such as : puffed feathers and heavy breathing . please pray for my bird im taking him to a vet as soon as possible
Very informative video, we got a young budge that had her wings clipped so the only flying she did is a short flight to the floor. Now after having her for about five months she is wanting to fly. At first she practiced in the cage flapping her wings so not knowing if she could actually fly we decided to leave the cage door open one evening because she is not tame enough to sit on your finger and very Leary of getting close to the open cage door. Well, we found out that she can fly very well, but she does not know how to slow down before hitting a wall. I would hate to see her break her neck before actually learning how to navigate the house safely. How do the birds know not to fly full speed into a wall? I can’t teach her to fly a bit slower and put the breaks on before hitting the wall, so what do we do? I hate to take chances with our bird. So what is the best thing to do because she wants to fly again. She flaps her wings and looks at us as if to say she wants to fly again. We tamed one budge a few years ago and can’t recall that bird flying straight into the walls
Stan Trim the reason she’s flying into walls is probably because she was clipped too young before learning how to fly. She never got a chance to learn how to slow down or turn at that critical fledging stage. For now I’d say the best thing to do would be lightly clipping her again just to slow her down so she doesn’t hurt herself, until she’s tame enough to sit on your finger. Once she’s tame you should let the feathers grow back and teach her to do small hops to your hand, and slowly increase the distance until she can fly to your hand. It takes time to learn how to fly with skill, so don’t be discouraged if she can’t do it right away.
They will crash and burn the first few times but let them keep trying. That's the only way they will learn. Close your curtains so he does not fly into the window. Place in a bigger room so be can learn to navigate better. He will need to learn to turn, fly up and down and land and to do boomarangs.
This is such a great video. I'm still grieving by my cockatiels death in 2017. I wish i knew what had happened to him that time. He flew and stopped, I saw his skin and is was darkening. I was trying to get a hold of the vet the day I was going to take him to the vet he passed away that morning :( We had him for about 8 years, he was such a great birds we all love him and still wish he was here! Thank you for the video!
I’m here because my cockatiel is sneezing and wheezing a little bit. I’m worried about her but those are the only problems she has. I’m going to keep an eye on her and take her in to the vet if anything at all changes. She’s still eating and drinking. Still wants attention and is still noisy. She’s still preening too. Hopefully she’ll be fine Good luck to everyone here for the same reason xx
3 of my cockatiels passed away in a span of 2 weeks due to respiratory problem. I did bring them to the vet but its too late.. To say i'm heartbroken is an understatement. My mom kept saying i'm wasting money by buying them T-T
What a great video honestly thank you Donna. This is such a great video because people like me and many others would find your amazing information very useful. God bless you. Keep it coming. Much respect.
So my bird has been sneezing a lot lately, his eyes seem dark like dark circles around his eyes yk, and also he rubs his head on cage often, I think it’s some sort of infection or idk please tell me if you know about this situation:( and also because of him (maybe?) , my other birds also have been sneezing I’m kinda worried. Please let me know

I just got a bird from the pet store and she’s been breathing heavily. Since I’m new to owning a bird I don’t know much about how they act when you first bring them home. I don’t know if it’s stress from being moved away from her mate and being in a box for a bit till I got home. If anyone could let me know I’d appreciate it so much. I have no vets around me or pet stores that can look at a bird.
My bird was showing really sick symptoms for the first time so I rushed him to the ER because this was the first time he’s been sick. The closest ER was like an hour away. He had to get surgery because he got an impaction from chewing socks. They had to do surgery on him so I left him at the clinic overnight. They called me in the middle of the day and asked if I wanted them to do surgery. I was upset because I told them to just do the surgery right away. I got him back at night and the surgery went great. We had to give him his antibiotics the next day but right when I got back home he started laying down on his back. He was still breathing and he had a heartbeat so I thought he was just exhausted from the anesthesia. I put him in a warm basket so he could rest easily. When it was time for him to get up his eyes weren’t pooping out like they used to be, his eyelids were half closed, he had no heartbeat, he wasn’t breathing, and he didn’t respond to anything. I knew it was too late. It probably would’ve been too late if I went back to the ER. I let them do a necropsy and it turns out he had a pulmonary embolism after surgery. He was only 3 years old and he was supposed to live a long time after that. He was also my first pet. Worst thing I’ve ever experienced
My cockatiel has a runny nose and sneezes a lot. She is still preening, eating and being energetic as much as she can rn because shes a bit older. She tail bobs a little im not sure if she was doing that before, but her mouth isnt opened. Its a little colder out here where i live so i think that she might caught a cold. I will try to get her to the vet as soon as i can. Its hard when i try to explain to my parents what is ok and what not with my bird. They just get very annoyed with me and they dont think that taking her to the vet is a must. Im trying to give her the best life i possibly can.
Definitely take her to an avian vet. Birds try to hide illness as they are prey animals and once they show signs they are very sick and can go downhill quickly.
When i got my cockatiel ( a year ago )he already had crooked toes but he didn't look sick or anything .Today he started looking very tired , sleeps a lot and half closes his eyes (he doesn't have any other symptom mentioned in the video). He has difficulty walking, limping and seems to be in pain when he walks he cannot stand on his feet and lies down to sleep .It looks like some kind of foot paralysis (he is 1 year old and some months)this is all happening in one day and I don't know what to do.What do you think?
It's hard to say what is wrong with your Cockatiel. His symptoms could mean many different issues from a virus, bacteria infection, organ issues, arthritis, broken bones or other health issues. It's best to take him to an avian veterinarian for a diagnosis.
A few days ago I had found a moth and a fecal dropping in my cockatiels water bowl, but I cleaned it out and refilled it with new fresh clean water. The next morning my bird wakes up and regurgitates his food and sat at the bottom of his cage and slept all day. Today he seems strong enough to scream and fly and he still has a good appetite and no change in his fecal droppings but I have not seen him drink any water since he had regurgitated his food.
How can I help my bird because he has a bald spot by his top right should he plucks, is there a reason to this, Ive had him for 5 months now and he’s been plucking since I’ve had him, he wasn’t treated well with his old owners, so I now happily own my baby, he had missing claws and a massive bald patch, if there is any info you can help with bald patches please let me know, thanks for the great informational video x
Hi, it's best to have him checked out by an avian vet. It could be many reasons why he has a bald spot and why he is picking at it. It could be bacterial, parasites, allergies, environmental, viral, diet or other reasons. He may need medication and a cone.
my kakariki sits on the bottom of her cage screaming, well only when I go near her. When I'm some where else, she sits some where else but as soon as I go close to her cage, she goes to the bottom of her cage in the corner screaming
My cockatiel has fluffed up feathers, sometimes closes her eyes halfway and there is brown spots on her feathers. Should I take her to the vet? Also thanks for the information ^^
I found your channel by having my conure falling down from a stroke maybe. He is over 55 yrs and I have had him for 50+. He now has been on the bottom of his cage for 2 weeks. He is eating and doing most things normally but can't / won't go up. He has tried once a day, but fails to stay. I moved the perches down so he wouldn't fall so far if he does try. Thank you for all the tips. He loves hearing your voice and your birds.

Hello.. I want to know that my bird is giving eggs and she don’t come out of her house and she’s getting weak day by day and she don’t come to eat.. when she gets out his other parrot disturbes her I hope u can help me! Thanks
Tuesday June 7, Cockatiel, had a hurt foot, was limping, June 8th, still hobbling, but able to eat and drink, took to the vet, bird (Noah), healthy except for the hobbling and a slight knot in the foot, Vet gave meloxicam to help for inflammation, next day, June 9th dead... To some, it's just a bird, to me: I went to the vet to check out foot pain and now she's dead. It's like going to the doctor's for a spranged ankle and fall over dead from Ibuprofen, that your not allergic to. Just... Why?🥺 P.S. I'm putting this up to help out others that may go through similar events. Always love your pets.😔 And if someone can explain why, please do. God bless.
So sorry for your loss. Did the vet take an x-ray? It's possible it could of been something internal or a reaction to the medication. He may of passed either way. Its best to do a necropsy if you are able to. So sorry.
I have lovebirds.and every other day his ear has been messing with the feathers exposing ear.i put q tip but nothing is on it.i did put triple ointment one day.if I cant take him to vet at moment.what can I do for him at home?I dis clean it with wet dam atop n little coconut oil.no discharge
Hope he will be ok. My cockatiels have a cold or some other kind of respiratory issue at the moment. They are sneezing and wheezing definitely having issues so they see the vet today .
@@abhishekvs3750 I done took them to the vet today . My budgie has a eye infection and my cockatiels both have upper respiratory infections. They are all on antibiotics now .
Hello! I cannot tell if my tiel is sick. He sits at the bottom of the cage quite a lot but he’s playful and chirps, and he does walk around. Recently he’s been pooping more frequently and i feel like it’s more so of clear liquid. I think he’s been limping slightly on one foot but i can’t tell exactly? I’m worried about him though i don’t want any false alarms… I can’t afford to take him to the vet right now. Any recommendations or feedback? Please.
Ask family and friends for help or ask your avian vet if there is a payment plan available. Put him in a hospital cage, no grate, low comfortable perch, place a towel on the bottom of cage with paper towel over towel for easy cleaning. Keep the cage clean, provide clean, fresh water and food. Keep in a warm area.
Is it weird if my cockatiel barely flies? (He’s 7 months old) He likes being on someone’s shoulder and doesn’t fly unless he really wants to go somewhere, which is a very short fly.
Hi Donna! Another informative video. The demonstrations of hospital cages and carriers taught me some new things, like providing a darkened area for the bird to rest. I'm glad you showed the plastic critter keeper. They are all sizes, colors, lightweight and see through, really convenient and easy to clean. Mine gets used to catch bugs and lizards that get in the house that I can't catch in my hands and then open a door to put them outside. Life in Florida will provide interesting wildlife visitors in your house. Kingsley enjoyed being the star of the show and he sure enjoys your long hair! Thanks for putting out this information as I think new bird owners and even those of us who have had birds for 30 years or more all learned something from this video.
Thanks, Donna for the information on bird's being sick. I have a Conure I've had her since she was six weeks old and that was in 2014. She can talk ,dance, cry and fuss at me when she's feeling good. But for the past three nights I haven't slept cause she's been crying when I leave her, & 0range Blossoms (cockatiels)( Pineapple)is the conure when I leave them Pineapple will cry and say come here I used to fall for that but when I get back to her,she would laugh at me. So now whenever she crying, I wait & listen to her cries but lately they are grinding sound so I don't move. Pineapple won't go into her house ( cage) she rather sleep on my dresser top of it. In the daytime she sleeps on top of the refrigerator underneath two cabinets. Whenever she hears the door she peeps out to see who it is. She lost her toenails on her left foot and it was bleeding when I came back from the hospital. My girl's get mad when I leave them alone and they don't speak to me. Blossoms can say a few words, come here,,mama Pineapple will not talk or listen to me,or obey me .
I don't know of a Veterinarian for bird's, here in Richmond, Va. They catered to dog, cats. I've called a few places and they are expensive but I will have to sacrifice cause Pineapple and orange Blossoms are my heart's. I'm disabled and I'm in a wheelchair my girl's are keeping me alive and I don't want nothing to happen to them. I am praying that Pineapple holds on until Friday morning then I will take her to a Veterinarian .
@@wandamccutchen4206 Hi Wanda, I don't know what to say. Been praying for you and your birds all day. One thing to keep on hand is called Qwick Stop (I think that is the spelling). It is a styptic powder with a numbing agent in it to use when a pet is bleeding. It is not uncommon that when you cut a pet's toenails the quick of the nail gets cut and bleeds like crazy, thus the name. It can be used on other places but I have only used it on my dogs' toenails, birds' toenails and one of my birds' beak as I trimmed it too short. Donna and the vet can give you better information than I can about what is going on with your birds. Letting them roam free, unsupervised, can lead to bad accidents, escapes and other sadness. It is best that they sleep in the safety of their cages and that they associate their cage as their safe place. Since both of your birds are acting differently than they used to, something maybe going on. My Amazon used to scream in the night. I would run into the bird room with a flashlight and he would laugh, just like your bird is doing. It is parrot humor. He used to also hang upside down from his swing with his wings hanging down, like he was dead, and then would laugh when I rushed over in terror. These birds are much smarter than people realize and they try to become the top of the pecking order in the house and have you be their slave! It is good that you are taking Pineapple to the vet because often we can't tell if the bird is sick or is just having a behavioral issue. Better safe than sorry! I hope everything turns out ok. I'm sorry to hear that you are unwell and having to deal with the stress and worry. Please let me know how the vet visit goes. I will keep you and your birds in my prayers. Shirley
Love your video Kingsley is getting so big.....my 7 mnth cockitel likes to bite me alot but he always wants love n to be with me do you know anything about this
My Cockatiels bite also, it means that they don't want to be touched or bothered at that time. Read his body language so you don't get bit. I can tell most of the time when they will bite but sometimes they do bite suddenly. There is usually a reason. They may be hormonal, territorial or want there space.

My bird just took like several laps around my room then i heard him breathing like i heard a sound huff n puff when he took a breath but this never happens only happenes when he flys alot
Call your local vets and ask if they know of any avian vets that do telemedicine. Search on line for avian telemedicine vets as most are doing this now during the pandemic. In the meantime cover the cage to keep him warm with a towel or blanket and leave the front of the cage open for breathing. Provide fresh water and food. If he is not eating offer spray millet as they usually eat spray millet. Take out higher up perches and leave a lower perch so he does not fall from higher up perches if weak.
@@Loveofpets Thank you for the advice, we took him to the vet and he must've eaten something that swelled up his stomach 3 times more then its original size. He has 3 medicines he has to take and special liquid food to eat until he gets better. But currently, he is in his cage with the blanket down.
I would like to share something with your viewers. I spoke with the owner of the store I got Rio from almost 10 years now. He told me apple cider vinegar only a few 2 drops in his water dish. I used Bragg's apple cider vinegar I believe it help him. They told me for a cup of water put in 8-10 drops Rio's water dish is over 1/2 cup but I only put in a little.
My cockatiel shakes in his cage, and stays in the corner until I see him then he comes closer to me. He also sneezes and I know this because when he “sneezed” there was water sprayed on me. When he comes out of the cage, he doesn’t seem to be sick. Help?
If a cockatiel bird with open mouth is jst wiggling his tongue and shivering from chest to stomach what does it mean ??? My bird is doing lik that...but he suddenly does that at anytime..what does it mean ??
This is an awesome video on sick bird care, Donna! You touched on all the major points, and I love your simplicity and affordability of your bird hospital set up. I prefer to use heating pads versus thermal heat lamps. However, I can’t find pet heating pads that stay on for more than two hours. If I use the heat lamps, I have to be careful not to over heat the bird it’s hard to monitor them if one Hass to be away from home for an extended period such as when one goes to work, another item I use in my bird hospital is a cool mist humidifier, I put it next to the the cage or aquarium to provide humidity and prevent dehydration.
My 9 month old male cockatiel all of a sudden stopped talking...And he talks a lot....He still chirps.....He is eating normal...But not eating his treat which he loves....And not using his beak stone like he normally does....But still playing with his chew toys....His poop is okay too....But he's definitely not his normal self.😔
I know you got a lot of comments asking for your help but if you can pls help me out. My green cheeked conure had a swollen red bump on his eye, I was concerned and my mom knew of a vet who ended up giving me some eye drops, eventually the eye started getting better. Everything was fine but yesterday , he vomited for the first time and I freaked out because vomiting is one of the most telling signs of illness. That same day I went to check on him and to my surprise there was a mouse in my birds cage, probably lured in by the seeds. I put him in a different cage away from the place the other cage was at and seems to be eating and drinking. My bird is itching a lot today and unusually took two bathes in a day. He seemed very puffed today but I’m not sure since I may be freaking out because of the vomit. I am very confused idk what’s up. I am planning to go to the vet but I’m not very sure if I’ll be able to in the end (idk where an avian is but I hope either my vet will give me direction or actually help my bird)
Hi, hope your bird is okay. It's best to go to an avian vet. Ask your local vet if he knows of any and search on Google. Some avian vets may do telemedicine and can help you that way. You have to figure out if he was actually vomiting or regurgitating.
Love of Pets I went to the vet and turns out he has a vitamin A deficiency, he vomited only once (I do know it’s not regurgitating) we got some drops for the eye and some vitamin A plus a list of fruits to give, thank you sm ❤️
Last week only I bought cockatiel he was suffering from diahreah since yesterday he was ok but few minutes ago I saw him sitting at the bottom of the cage closing his eyes
Hi! great channel, love your videos. I'd to ask u something about the cockatiel's behaviour. I've a 7 month (probably) male cockatiel who in the last week has started to shake quite violently his foodcontainer before and during eating, he also shakes it and sing some tune(jingle bells in this case). He is also really jealous about its space in the cage and food, if you try to get close while eating he can bite you. Is it normal? could it be sick? He flies regularly in my house, he loves to get some love and to stay on our shoulders/heads but when he eats...he behaves differently. He does his poopoo every 20 minutes, he sings, he crawl, he is very very active
Call your local vet and ask if they know of an avian vet that does telemedicine. Google it also as most vets are doing telemedicine due to the pandemic
