First off this is NOT a review, this is a chronicle of my time owning both. I've owned the Skulpt and Craft 2.0 for about a year. Honestly I don't think I could have made this review without having to go through my normal routine with them. So yeah, it took like a year, which did I pick up when I was going to the beach, which one did I enjoy regardless of the shortcoming. Please see the section "from Noir the editor" about some things you'll need to use these with an iPad.
I want to make this clear, it takes time to bring a genuine personal experience and put it into words. So yeah, thank you for your patience.

I just feel like it takes a good amount of time see about the reliability, and actually give specific thoughts about a piece of gear. I’ve always liked “Long Term Reviews.” The longer you have something the more situations you’ll find yourself in, and I think people can gain some perspective when you do it that way. I also don’t like learning new gear fast, heck, I like making music not learning menus or interfaces. So I end up getting a piece and just being like “ok cool, this is my thing for the next 6 months.” ..........But deep down inside I wish you were watching ads lol, since well, I don’t make money and I buy my gear. I tried and don’t really like Patreon. I can only make videos as much as I can afford it from Ad Revenue. I don’t mind watching ads, I get it’s a trade off, BUT, actually making a video with ads, NO, I did it once for Reverb and I didn’t like it. To each their own, if I ever do actually start doing ads I’ll make the price to the companies SOOOOOO high that almost no company will agree to it 😂 I guess I’m just shooting myself in the foot.

@@NoirEtBlancVie You're absolutely right. Plus usually when new gear first drops theres a dozen videos showing much the same content. Most of us don't buy gear on day 1 of release. So a perspective from a few months later when there have been potential updates, firmware releases etc is much more valuable.

@@NoirEtBlancVie I find long term reviews to be more valuable than typical day 1 stuff. Not only do you get the perspective of how well the product holds up, but you also get the insight of all that time spent actually using the thing. Even the best musician isn't going to know all the ins and outs of an instrument the first time they pull it out of the box. I'm a person who likes to buy interesting gear, but it's not often that I sell anything. I have usually regretted selling some of the stuff I've owned in the past (especially the Juno-60). My budget is also rather limited, so for these reasons I give extra consideration before committing to buying something. Being able to rely on the word of a person who has actually used something for an extensive amount of time is extremely beneficial.

@@rars0n yeah, honestly I’m not at all against new gear being showed consistently. Though for me, I’m only really interested in stuff I would spend considerable time with, as well as older pieces I think are still good! Just wait till the Halloween episode, it’s an OLD synth lol.

Awesome vid! Nice seeing love for these tiny powerful synths. Had to pick up 2 Skulpts for the 8-voices and adding a slight pan for each device give it a much more fuller sound. I also have 2 CS 2.0 and all hooked up to the NDLR.

I'm the same. I never really bonded with Skulpt but I really like Craft 2.0. To be fair, i think some of that is that they fixed a few of Skulpt's most annoying problems in Craft 2.0 but I also prefer its sound, so it wins easily for me.

I seriously love my skulpt. It's got a massive sound for something so small and (dare I say it) cheap feeling. The battery option means you can create beautiful deep drones on the go

Nice to know that several other people had this dilemma too. I ended up getting a Microfreak instead of either. Just as portable with more sound sculpting options IMO. Better build quality too.

Never thought I will see this review! Awesome! Please review Modal Electronics Argon8 or 8m. Btw I was drooling over the skulpt for a year then ordered it. I was really disapointed by the knobs. Some of them literaly fell out. Also the keyboard was touch sensitive where it should not be. So the quality was bad. I had to return it :/

I'm guessing that the Craft 2.0 made track "B". Which isn't going to stop me from attempting to get a similar sounding patch out of my Skulpt. I love that tone.

Skulpt SE was my first Hardware synth. Still have it and use it(its now my only poly synth). The Build quality its all about the price, even those Behringer plastic pedals have more quality in the chasis. But... this synth sounds amazing. Its much more than a "VST in a box". For pads, lo-fi, juno chords and even bass, its great.

I enjoy the Craft 2.0 more as well. The big thing is that without the app, it's the easier synth to use, too. The Skulpt makes beautiful sounds, but damn, that way they laid out the knobs...no.

I’ve only had the Craft 2.0 for a few weeks but I came to similar conclusions based on what sounds I had covered by other synths. Really like this little wavetable beast, I think of it as my portable mono Massive X. I’d say song A is Skulpt and B is Craft 2.0.

I agonized over the two when the Craft 2.0 came out. Ended up getting the Craft. SO MUCH AWESOMENESS. Not sure there's another wavetable synth in that size, deffo not any as fun! Been running the output thru the audio in of my Korg monologue, too. Y-Yeah! Thanks for doing the video! Cheers, yo! And WHAT ABOUT DEM APPS!!!

I feel like for me if I wanted to get one of these, I’d get both. Not totally sold, but I am more informed in my search for a portable thing I can take wherever, thanks! Recently been considering buying a Waldorf Blofeld. I had one a few years back for a short time, but it was stolen out of my car at a gig 😭 do you have much experience with the blofeld or other Waldorf stuff? I remember loving the wave table options and the ability to layer samples.

The Blofeld is the last Waldorf synth I’d buy. The essence of Waldorf seemed to end with it.

I’ve got both, AND the new Skulpt SE, and all three are keepers (unlike the Microfreak, which is GONE). Provided you have a midi keyboard and can access the Modal app, both (or all three) of these synths punch WAY above their price point. Oh, and I have the UNO too, but it doesn’t see anywhere near as much use…

I got the Reface CS and it is currently my favorite! Batteries hold a long time, it is easy to do everything with sliders and the built in speakers are a treat sitting on a couch with it. I plug in electric guitar with an overdrive pedal or Volca Drum through the aux in, create a little loop on the built in looper and play for hours. Built quality is great and i prefer the keys over MicroKorg minikeys as well. 8 note polyphony also helps a lot, to create a loop with the CS and play over on itself. Got it used for 150€ and it is a keeper.

The idea of using the ipad to share not only the brains but also to extend the physical functionality with these smaller synths is genius. The manufacturing savings is what puts these synths above anything else in their price range imo.

I love the red pill blue pill reference of the movie with comparing synth. I just watch this because I just won a bid for the SkulptSynth SE to use with my midi wind controller Aerophone 10. I saw there was an option to add another skulptsynth to add more polyphonic notes, but my friend tells me that I should pair it up with the Craft 2.0 ? Tough choice?!?! The 256 step sequencer is the biggest I have heard on a synth!

Track A sounds like the craft 2.0 to me, and track B sounds like the Skulpt from what you were saying in the video :D Really makes me want to get a craft 2.0! wavetable synthesis always sounds so nice.

If you have an iPad Pro, you can skip the silly Lightning dongle and just get a USB-Cmicro USB cable from Amazon, a much neater solution.

Just splashed 150 pounds on a skulpt2 to polychain my original , now I have 8 voices... but I'm still prefering the scale and footprint the craft2 has.

When I travel with the Skulpt I reverse a battery so it doesn’t accidentally turn on or put a piece of scotch tape over the power switch.

Yeah I kinda just wish the case for the Skulpt was more like the Craft, the Skulpt case is just asking for one drop destruction.

My issue with the Craft is the REQUIRED cables to actually operate the app. You have to separately, and at extra cost, ninja-up lightning to USB and USB to microUSB connection. And while Modal states you don't have to use the app, it becomes immediately apparent that one does not have any references as to where one is on the sonic pallet of the synth without the app. I do like the iPad app though, it's well laid out, clear and easy to use. My 2nd issue is with Craft's power supply - it does not like being powered from the wall - it introduces random sounds and noises which are audible and ruin the composition. I hope this will be fixed in mkII.

@@NoirEtBlancVie The issue is actually apple - they don't want easy intercompatibility with other standards, so they made their own, and modal used the most common USB and apple requires you to pay for an adapter with that. If you're using a usb-c ipad or phone you can use a third party usb-c hub and pay less, and use that hub with all the rest of your usb-c devices. It's apple's fault they want you to buy a camera connector kit.

I sold my skulpt after a couple of months. Poor build quality. The layout was also confusing and I mostly ended up using it as a "soft synth" and did everything via the app.

Anyone know how you power this with usb whilst also connecting to the app and a usb midi controller which also needs power. Every one else seems to know this, as this video shows, but how to do it seems to be a closely guarded secret. Anyone know? Finding this out is so difficult because it's such a long and specific search query, I can only find bits of solutions. Or even being able to power it via usb whilst being connected to the app would be a start.

For an iPad, you can use camera connection kit. I got an off brand on Amazon for cheap and it works great.

Yeah, I guess when that guy only reviewed 2 synths in a year the Uno had a 50/50 chance. Uno is a better sounding synth, Skulpt is a better overall piece in that guys option of course 😂😂😂😂😂😂
