Your Skulpt patches sound fantastic. This is the second time you've inspired me to take a second look at a synth I had no interest in originally. I bought the Uno Synth after I heard you have a play with it and I've had a great time with it (my only mono synth and only analog). Cheers!

VA has come a long ways. I think the Hydrasynth is prime example of how good VA is now.

I would love to see a comparison of the "vintage" Yamaha AN1x (or the PLG-150AN board) with a modern VA and an analogue synth. These Yamahas have been my absolute favourite VA's over the last two decades (in terms of sound).

I can't unhear the MicroKorg now lol... FYI the OG SKULPT has black and then Archer-esque slightly more darker black keys (a very dark grey for the white keys). Thanks for such an in-depth co! I'm considering picking up an SE to add four more voices to my ($300 lol...) OG.

The fact that the Skulpt can hold it's own against the OB-6 is... sheesh. Maybe I should pick up that Cobalt 8 after all...

Great demo. One of the few good Skulpt demos that demonstrates the basic building blocks of oscillators and filters, and that it’s a really good VA. It also shows some of the limitations of the Microkorg. I always felt the Microkorg XL was better sounding. I could match it really really close to some analogs, in particular Moogs.

Access Virus is VA too they're amazing synths.

This made me curious so I just checked this on my (1998) Nord Modular G1 - couldn't see any unusual artifacts on the spectrum.

Virtual analog in a mix, either a typical band mix, or, a synth jamming mix with lots of synths, beat boxes, groove boxes, samplers, has always been just fine. People get confused because of reviews where that one synth is sitting there all alone making all the sound; and that sound has to be gigantic to be impressive, but, that giganticism has to be tamed in a mix with other instruments. That's why I only want digital poly synths and I only want analog mono synths. Digital poly synths offer up to 256 polyphony and no worries of tuning. Analog monosynths tuning issues are not dramatic and we get big sound for those solo's. I have one exception, I will be buying the Korg Minilogue this year to use the polyphony to blend long release envelope single note or two note chords seamlessly together.

Did you get a copyright claim for a Justice track? cause im gonna be honest thats where my mind went when i read that part during the jam session, and even though its bullshit, that certainly is a super nice compliment for the skulpt in a weird sort of way. Man I really need to pull out my skulpt again.

To my ears there's still a big difference between analog filters and VA filters, especially when resonance and modulation is applied. Comparing single waveforms most people cant tell the difference anymore. But even modern VA plugins or VA HW still have a long ways to go when you start comparing when modulations are applied to oscillators and filters, mixers, etc. The differences are still quite evident in the whole, overall changing timbre of the sound. Eventually VA will completely replace analog in these ways too unless if the science of hearing is not really or truly understood yet. Some "science" says otherwise and there's a perceptive element to analog (the feel or sense of analog) that digital can never theoretically reproduce. But if we're solely talking about generating electrical waveforms and soundwaves then VA can match real analog technologies without us being able to percieve the microscopic differences due to the non pseudo-randomness from thermal background noise and other minut physical effects such as upon a transistor that no one will ever bother modelling. Personally there's been times I've thought I've experienced this, but as VA gets better and better I'm not so sure anymore. But that's a whole different discussion at any rate.

Hi how would you compare the skulpt vs behringer DM12? I ve got borh, it s seems to me that the skulpt is by far more funny, easy to use and crispy. What s your mind?

What about aliasing in the upper octaves? How does the Skulpt SE sound higher up the keyboard?

This is really good. However, I would really like to hear this phenomenon with the microkorg and can't detect it with good headphones and maximum video quality. Is there an uncompressed WAV file posted somewhere? Thanks!

How many people are taking their analog or high-quality modern virtual analog and putting a sample rate reduction plug-in on it and making it sound like the microkorg?

I don't hear anything uniquely bad or lesser in the microkorg (6 minutes in now), sounds just as good to me, and I used to own both it and the skulpt next to each other. The korg can be a little midrangey but that's it, and it's built in eq works that out fine. 2 great and equal, but different sounding, synths

In all fairness, the blind analog verses digital bit, is an improper comparison. Good modern virtual analog. Simple waveforms/filter sweeps. Both being heard over the internet, as digitized sound, on youtube. Under those circumstances, very few will hear any difference. Most would require more complex patches and most importantly, hearing the comparison live in person. I totally agree that the Skulpt SE is very impressive. I just ordered one myself. IMO it sounds better than roland's virtual analog stuff. Not sure I would put down the ms-2000. I had one for a bit. A bit wonky sure but I understand why some music artists still have one on their rack. I would be curious if the Skulpt SE would change any of their minds. It sure sounds good.
