Faster run here: • Syphon Filter Speedrun...
Played on Bizhawk (PS1 emulator with similar load times).
PAL version (which runs about 15% faster than NTSC)
Time from Game Start to when the final cutscene starts playing.
Finally got a deathless run with most of the optimized recent discoveries. Happy to break through the slump and don't even mind missing the 59 that much. More to come -- Watch live at / baronhaynes

What an impressive run, congrats! I haven't followed SF speedrunning (or speedruning in general) for years, just happen to stumble upon this almost by accident. It's great to see that people are still running this game, and that new discoveries are still made. There were a lot of small things that where new to me, or maybe i forgot about it over time. How does that grenade glitch on Rhomer's base work?

Thank you! That's a 2-part glitch from 2018, yeah - what I *think* is happening is certain special items like the C4, keycards, and the viral antigen share an inventory slot with grenades. Another glitch allows you to equip two items at once, by switching weapons with the weapon wheel during another animation like rolling or falling off a ledge. Combining both equips a grenade and the PK-107 at the same time, but you can only fire the combined weapon in manual aim. I use this in both Rhoemer's Stronghold levels as well to get extra gas grenades. There's a lot of other new discoveries as well, like setting up instarolls at the start of stages by holding circle immediately after skipping the weapon briefing (only on stages without an FMV for PAL) and pausing/unpausing right before you hit the level end trigger to skip the fadeout. Both of those save around 2 seconds each time. A lot of other little things as well, and probably still more to find. There's still another minute I could get with a cleaner run, and from there I'll have to consider whether I want to pick up a PAL PS2 and run on console, which is almost 2 minutes faster than Bizhawk. If this run had been on console, it would've been roughly a 58:00.

Thank you for the detailed response! Interresting, maybe I should try it myself. Haven't played SF in a couple of years, so it's about time I do a playthrough. And yeah, I think you should get a PAL console as they run this game a bit faster. Probably a bit expensive if you can't find one in the states though. I remember buying a Genesis on Ebay from a guy who lived on Hawaii, shipping was not cheap but it was still cheaper than buying an import console from Sweden or the rest of Europe, haha. Anyways, I wish you luck with your future runs!

The potential for TAS is maybe like 52 or 53 minutes I think.

Does fast swapping of weapons make Gabe run faster? Something you're experimenting with like the constant rolling?

It does, in fact that's the next of the mechanics comparison vids I'm working on! There's some fluctuation depending on how steady your mashing rhythm is, but a general rule is that it saves about 2 seconds if you do it for a minute straight

There are two inventory glitches that can be combined - the main one is an animation interrupt where you use the weapon wheel during a fall or roll, which confuses the game and equips both weapons at once. The other is an inventory ID glitch, where specialty items like C4, keycards, and the viral antigen use the same slot as grenades, and by double equipping them with the PK-107, allows you to throw grenades while firing it in first person. I use the animation interrupt while falling off the top boxes at 28:17, combining the antigen with the PK-107. You can see it worked because I'm holding the PK-107 in one hand. I fire it in first person on the ledge, and Gabe auto-targets the scientist in the room behind the stained glass with a gas grenade. At some point I'm going to make a video explaining this glitch in greater detail, but I do the same trick in Mission 8 at 20:17 with a roll interrupt, to knock out the motion sensors with a grenade without having to go through the fence.
