lack of training, and lack of leadership

Leadership here isn't the problem, this is a bad apple officer problem. If i were his supervisor I would write him up and recommend suspension without pay and retraining.
@PhiberOptik1979
@PhiberOptik1979 3 года назад
@@Junkman2008 Well, I can't help that you think that, but that's not true at all. Officers ultimately ac for themselves. No amount of training can stop a person from acting how they want to in the moment. I am sure you were taught to drive by someone, but I am sure you have ran a light or two, or caught yourself speeding or not using a turn signal. It's the same thing. A driving instructor teaches you not to do these things, but you ultimately make your own choices after that. It is not a though you come out of the academy, get trained and turn into a robot that only acts upon their training. you see my point? All the leadership in the world doesn't change personalities.

The officer used violence first. That's unacceptable. He got in the face of the bystander and then pushed him. Your badge does not give you that right. It doesn't matter that the bystander was flinging awful language at the cop. Cops are supposed to be above that. I know cops are human, but this job requires them to be better than human. Whilst what the officer did was wrong, I do understand why he snapped.

I am a 21 year police veteran, field training officer/former detective/field Sergeant and teacher in a major metropolitan area. This officer was WRONG for how he handled that, however I do want to point out that it is a common occurrence for scenes like this to escalate because of other peoples involvement. No, the cop shouldn't have done that. Should this guy have gotten himself involved in the first place? No. You got people screaming that the first guy didn't do anything and cameras out filming when he was driving an unregistered car and was refusing to follow instructions. People don't realize exactly how often this goes wrong and you aren't going to help by getting involved and causing a scene like that. It makes it harder for us to do our job while we have to split our concentration between multiple people and sadly enough, worry about being ambushed and attacked from the onlookers which happens more than you'd think. 95% of police use of force encounters happen because people do not comply with police orders or instructions. You do not have to agree with why you are being arrested or detained. you can ask questions but the law in every state dictates you have to follow lawful orders given by a police officer. You take up what you think they did wrong in a court of law, not at the roadside. I see so many videos of people refusing to cooperate until the officers explanation isn't sufficient for them, You can explain it a million times but this is often a stalling tactic by someone. Police use of force encounters would fall dramatically if people would just comply and share their disagreement in court. Arguing whether you got pulled over for a red light violation and making the officer spend time trying to convince you, you are given a summons where you can argue probable cause with an attorney and a judge. This culture of outright defiance is only contributing to the problem. But yes, the cop was wrong. I won't deny that.

Lieutenant Tom from Ohio here, I normally side with the police when they are right, it is normally a matter of people not understanding why something happened or had to happen. I look at this and can do nothing but shake my head.. I would suspend this officer for at least 10 days and mandatory unpaid retraining before he can come back. This is the kind of crap that gives us a bad name and it was completely unprofessional and he is lucky it didn't escalate this further. I would not want him as a partner although I would have to being the LT of Patrol division, he would be on probation for 6 months and I would have to ride with him periodically, or he had to ride with a Sergeant if I am unavailable that day. But What a jackass. Yes, we can only take so much crap but you can't do that. Yes at him? Unprofessional but alright I guess. He might get a written warning in his file but as cops we must learn to take it. He is probably new or newer. Less than 3 years on the job I reckon. Stop calling us tyrants. We are not tyrants,. I spent 13 of my 22 years in school to enhance my knowledge to be a better, and more effective officer and I pride myself on that.Even though I am now in an administrative role, I asked to be Lt. of the patrol division so I can remain active on the street because that is what I love to do, I am just now in charge of Sergeants on down the ladder. In essence, I do more paperwork and take civilian complaints about officers and such. The next step up is Captain but I have to be an Lt for at least 5 years before I can take that test. I have 4 more years until I have my 25 in and can retire but I intend to do another 10 to further my next egg for my Daughter's education. (She is going to medical school to be a Doctor) and getting her PhD is going to be expensive! I like to think I am asset my agency. I have done a lot of things such as started programs for juveniles, getting them into branches of the military to helping the local hospitals as a Sergeant re-write their policies on evidence collection during DUI.OVI or Impaired driving policies. But most don't think tha we police ourselves, but we do. It just often goes on behind the scenes and you don't see it. We suspend guys/gals, we fire them, etc. We take internal investigations very seriously and the supervision staff works tirelessly to help punish those who do the wrong thing. I am glad to hear that this officer did get suspended. I normally side with the police and try to educate people on why they were right because it is a fundamental lack of understanding that leads them to their conclusions about things. I do my best to create dialogue between the police and the people. It is undeniably important right now. I have a facebook for asking cops questions, and I do it here in RU-vid comments as well..
