I grew up on the Syracuse music scene. I have never been sXe nor will I ever be, but I have a lot of respect for their beliefs, as long as they don't push it on everybody. Back in the 90's and early 2000's were some of the best shows Syracuse has ever had and a lot of it had to do with the strong sXe scene. I miss the concerts, I miss the people and I honsetly miss the scene, which has seemed to slowly turn into fashion-core.
I didn't manage it till I was 39, better late than never. I can't agree with some but no drugs and booze makes me feel freer and I'm a better parent. Thanks Fugazi for giving me the idea but I've made it my own.
No, it's not.I give them mad respect for having those kinds of values and the discipline to stand behind them without some form of big stick ready to smack them should they fail. I could never do it. The thing I liked most was that they NEVER tried to "convert" me or looked down on me for not being like them. At least I know Ian and Eric and Karl felt that way and were wise enough to understand we each have our own path to follow. Best of luck to you on yours, Sir.
I hold high respect for all those SXE folk, who went against the mindless mainstream and so called subcultures duplicating consumerism in other form. It's easy to change your haircut and clothes and pretend to be alternative but to radically change habits that's another story.
@kickouttheyuppies I respect you bro. Cannabis smoker here. When I meet someone and we end up having the same interests I'll ask them if they smoke. What do I do if they don't? Nothing. I won't try and force something on someone that clearly doesn't show any form of interest. I occasionally meet the straight edge person that will try to do that to me. I have immense amounts of respect for people that respect the decisions you make with YOUR life/body.
I will admit, I used to use drugs and alcohol heavily. It really did hurt my life. I am one of the lucky ones to not be dead or in prison like a lot of people I know. I wish I would have gone straight edge as a teen. So, more power to them.

To the best of my knowledge, none of them are making a living off their record sales-back then it was because of shady label accounting, and nowadays ... well, nobody actually buys records anymore. I think bands only profit from merch in the modern era.
I'm Straight Edge and I don't know anyone at my school who is. I makes me sick to hear other teens on my bus home talk about getting high on pot, drinking alcohol, and having sex in the bathrooms! Is anyone else who's Straight Edge willing to be my friend?
same here man i went a jesuit HS in NYC and i was the only edge kid in my school and a lot of ppl made fun of me for it. A couple ppl respected my choice but no one decided to claim. Im a freshmen in college now and i still havent found another edge kid. it sux but you gotta stick with it cuz its who you are and you cant change it. Stay true Stay Posi ,bro
@Guav best friends include one who´s straight edge, who s recently become vegan, one who was vegan-straight edge, then i introduced him to mind expansing/psychedelic substances (hes very grateful for that) and one vegetarian, who loves beer. i can tell you from personal experience, most of the kids in the atlanta scene that were SxE in the 90's aren't SxE anymore. i remember going to the shows with them not being SxE and getting shit for it. lol. now, i get shit for still not fitting in with my friends because i don't drink. go figure.
@xStaycleanx I'm not going to lie, it WAS great. But I couldn't fully appreciate it at the time-years down the road you look back and think about how awesome the days gone by were. I suspect you'll do the same with the things that don't necessarily seem amazing to you now.

So now all those "kids" are men and women with jobs and money and the band is actually making a living off their record sales now or at least doing better. That's good. I saw one of those royalty checks. It was for sixty cents. That was 15 years ago. Good for them.
Oh my goodness, are you serious? WHAT BRUTALITY! I can't believe that he had the nerve to react physically to someone who physically assaulted his girlfriend (future wife and mother of his children). Such savagery cannot at all be due to the fact that most guys--whether straight edge, drunk, carnivore or vegan--will fucking hit you if you spit on their girlfriend. I'm sure your Significant Other will be honored and pleased to know that if someone spit on them, you would do nothing.
well...record sales and touring and merch and all that stuff. i know they are doing BETTER. maybe not enough to quit the day job i suppose. they have stayed busy at least and do better than most from the cuse. i admire ANY band that stays busy and gigs for nearly 15 years. that in itself speaks volumes about them. its never been about the money with those guys. i was never really into hardcore but i would go see them once in a while. and there were those couple times at hellfest...

@EngineOfRuin I find the implication that your mind can only be "freed" through the consumption of drugs to be ludicrous. As far as heroin goes, it's irrelevant whether or not pure heroin itself is toxic to the body-the cutting agents frequently are. There is evidence that perhaps as many as half of "heroin ODs" are really the result of the quinine, chloroquine, or phenolphthalein it is often mixed with. The bottom line-and the point-is that shooting heroin is inherently dangerous.

@ToolOfTrade Since almost everyone interviewed is now between the ages of 38 and 50, and have children and families, calling them "kids" is a bit odd. Some of them are pro-life, and some of them are pro-choice. Some are left wing, a couple might be right wing. Most are straight, one is gay. None of them are close minded assholes-at least no more close minded than you are, with your loaded questions and presumptions.
i use to smoke and drink alot but theres more to life and straight edge helped me see it its just not about drugs its aboutl iving life and being there with your family and brothers never hurts to listen to the bands and explore you guys should try it sometime.
