'Szamár Madár' - Venetian Snares Live Cover

This is a live video taken from my 2011 diploma music recital.
I'm performing my adaptation of Venetian Snares' 'Szamár Madár' from the 'Rossz csillag alatt született' record.
This is somewhat of a teaser video for one of the next videos I'll be uploading, which will be a full HD, studio quality version of this tune.
I transcribed this tune a year ago and have spent a few months going over the parts. There were a few minor mistakes, essentially accenting something slightly different to the drums part behind me, but nothing overly noticeable.
I believe I can take this tune a step further in the recording process and aim for the exact sounds and replicate as much as possible.
But for a live rendition, I hope I did a reasonable job of emulating synthetic drums and one hell of a drum part.

Unfortunately they already tried that in a big theater, with two drummers and a small orchestra, there is a video on RU-vid. The problem is that the drums are way way too loud and overpowering in comparison.

DEFINITELY. There is no room for sloppiness and any error at all. There are a few hiccups in this particular performance, which is a shame. I'd rehearsed it so much that every note was burned into my mind. But oh well, I guess that's the one thing we have over machines, being able to break our 'programming', haha! Thanks for watching!

It may have been 10 years since you posted this, but I've only just found it. And I've gotta say... I've been a (terrible) drummer for 20 years and a Snares fan for just as long, and I cannot find a single hiccup. That last bit where you prepare yourself and then fully launch into it - I felt that. This is absolutely awesome and I hope all this time later, you're proud of what you did.

What you did is no small feat dude. I’d call this an approximation (like 80-85%) of the drums in a Venetian snares song. Which is crazy to say out loud. It kind of sounds like even though you practiced enough it was burnt in your mind, you were still kind of playing off musical cues. Have you practiced it enough you could play it without the track? I hope this is taken as constructive criticism because I applaud your effort dude!

Absolutely amazing. I play the drums for 9 years and tried this piece for 2 weeks after giving up, the pace is just to fast to combine it with the low/hard sound of the snare. You kept the tempo while remembering every detail that makes this solo so hard, very impressive.

Brilliant. .... Reminds me of a guy in South Africa that played drums for an obscure band called "Interzone " Guston Goliath was his name. Brilliant in playing break beats. Great stuff kid. We'll done.

I sure did. That's one of my favourite parts. Also one of the trickiest. It's quite difficult to execute those press rolls that quickly. I haven't got it sounding perfectly like the track, but it's pretty close. Thanks for the kind words.

@rocklobster4731 Well, i transcribed it about year ago. That took forever. Learning it took less time, but still took about a month of solid hours spent on the kit. I know there were some small errors, but the thing is, I can nail every bar of this, this was just in an exam situation, not a comfortable shoot for a cover video. Anyway, there'll be a 100% nailed version up in the near future. keep an eye out!

Thanks so much! I have to agree with that, when you see this stuff played out by a real drummer, you appreciate this guys talent so much more. I find a lot of people just let the blur of drums overwhelm them and not really try and figure out what's going on.

@PostRocker94 All the specs are in the description. Hats are 14" Meinl Byzance trad. Thin. Crash is 20" Dream Bliss paperthin, the rides are a 22" Paperthin Dream Vintage Bliss and the other is a 20" Dream Bliss prototype ride w/rivet.

Go for it! The transcription is there for your benefit. I'm still working on taking it further, but by all means learn what I've put up. It's difficult, but it's really beneficial to your playing to learn something like this.

Sure did! There's a bunch of cool things you can add to your drums to make kooky sounds. I learned that one from this sick jungle drummer KJ Sawka (now drummer for pendulum) and Benny Greb has a few sweet additions on his Language of Drumming DVD which is a great place to start for things like that. He also lists some other crazy dudes who take that to the next level. Glad you enjoyed the video!

That´s some remarkable drumming. I am a guitarplayer myself and used to jam with a drum and bass guy with him on machines. Machines are quite unforgiving when playing up against them I remember having a really hard time doing so. You seem to keep up very tightly. Respect!

I am really sorry that it has taken me so long to do more videos and a proper HD version of this. It is something i have very high on my priority list. To give you an indication of what i've been working on; My 2 original bands have recorded 4 records that have been (or are about be) released, I've been granted a national tour with The Mark of Cain, filling in for John Stanier (battles, tomahawk) and a run of shows at the sydney opera house late last year. I apologize & I will get around to it!

@godsmackhudejo Oh yeah, I'm glad someone picked up on that bit. It's quite a hard little phrase to do cleanly. To be honest, it's not quite as full sounding as the track, as you have to do such quick snare swapping between the press rolls, you don't have much time to let them buzz out. But i think it emulates it well, and with the track works perfectly. It's just a matter of refining these phrases into something even more spot on.

@ViNe2k Thanks so much! Sadly there isn't a picture of that, but I can explain how I got 'that' sound. So, it's a 3005 maple snare, with a Remo C.S. Dot head tuned super low. The splash is placed flat on the head and some tape is run from either side of the hoops, over the splash. It's a mix of a Gretsch Catalina, Sonor 3005 & ddrum diatribe. I just found drums that sounded nice in the sizes i liked and put together a small kit while I saved for a custom set. The snares are a sonor jungle & a sonor 3005 maple.
