3rd May marks the World Press Freedom Day; Considering and Advocating Information as a Public Good, this day acts as a reminder for governments to promise and promote their press’s commitment to unbiased and transparent portrayal of issues prevailing within the country. Join us as we present to you three speakers hailed as among the select few who unwaveringly establish and advocate for press freedom, all the while being notable members of the press for years.
About the Speakers:
Nasir Zaidi:
Nasir Zaidi is the existing Secretary General of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ), carrying a great background of struggle in the way of freedom of journalism and. He was arrested from his newspaper office in 1978, and was summoned before a summary military court where he was sentenced imprisonment and flogging. But that did not waver Zaidi’s spirit to fight for press freedom.
Zaidi, who has been associated with The News, Islamabad is greatly respected for his bravery which serves as an example for the new generation of media. His integrity is such he is regularly asked by journalist bodies like the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) and the Press Club to conduct their elections.
Mujahid Barelvi:
Mujahid Barelvi is a Pakistani journalist; the first to enter Kabul in 1979, after the Soviet invasion. He was secretary of the Karachi Press Club for two years during the late 1980s. He has written articles for political journals and newspapers and has authored six books on Afghanistan and Baluchistan. As a progressive writer and publisher, he founded various magazines. Barelvi is known for his cut-throat questioning skills and journalistic integrity.
Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan:
Dr Tauseef Ahmed Khan: Presently Chairman of Mass Communication Department FUUAST, he is a very dynamic and committed soul to his work. A great advocate of free press, has long association with media, still writing columns in different newspapers. Dr. Tauseef is a social and human right activist.
