Today I have Dr. Amie Hornaman on my podcast for a follow up Q & A based on our previous podcast! Dr. Amie is known as the thyroid fixer and both her and I share a similar philosophy when it comes to treating and managing hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, and thyroidectomy patients.
Our conversation today focuses mostly on T3 thyroid medication, how to use it, who should use it, its safety, how it impacts thyroid lab tests, and much more. We also talk a lot about weight loss and common pitfalls that thyroid patients face when they try to lose weight.
You can learn more about Dr. Amie Hornaman here:
- Her Podcast the Thyroid Fixer: dramiehornaman.com/podcasts/
- Her Website: dramiehornaman.com/meet-amie/
If you have any additional questions please be sure to leave them below so we can do yet another follow-up Q and A.
Topics and questions discussed in this video include:
- Do we all need T3?
- Using T3 if you have a thyroidectomy, is 5mcg a good starting dose, and should I worry about lowering my TSH?
- Risks vs rewards of TSH suppression and low TSH
- Can you be hypothyroid with a low TSH
- When is the best time of day to take T3? Is taking T3 at night safe and effective?
- Is taking levothyroxine at night better than in the morning?
- Taking T3 before you drink coffee
- Making tweaks to your thyroid medication when you are completely optimized vs when you are trying to optimize your dose
- T3 and T4 sublingual absorption. Can you take your thyroid medication under your tongue?
- How can I lose weight, balance immune function, and improve my thyroid numbers if I have Hashimoto's?
- How thyroid function impairs other hormones downstream which then makes losing eight more difficult
- When to use sustained release T3 and how it compares to immediate release T3
- I can't lose weight even when eating 1650 calories per day, what can I do to lose weight?
- Why reducing your calories as a hypothyroid patient can lead to thyroid damage and problems with reverse T3
- What is a good starting dose of berberine for weight loss?

Dr. has changed my thyroid medication a couple of times. These days. I have put on more weight than never before in my life. I have become allergic to snow ❄️ cold, I do suffer for over 5 months of cough, loss of hair, and accessive heat at night. I have to cover my neck always from snow cold. Otherwise, my neck can start feeling weird immediately. I'm so happy that I came across this 😍, it's impressive to learn of this because most of the questions I have been having are answered 🙌.

Please add information on menopausal struggles with previously balanced thyroid dis ease. I started synthroid in my early 20s, with few symptoms... until I turned 40! After much pleading, Reverse T3 was finally checked (29). I now take a micro dose of liothyronine (10 mcg) which keeps Reverse T3 around 12. I have much more energy... but I haven't been able to get rid of the extra 20 pounds of fat gained in my abdomen. I feel that I am aging too quickly as well, yet I eat a clean diet of low grains, gluten, and dairy. I get a lot of vegetables and go for grass-fed meat.

In England we cannot be prescribed T3 due to costs. I am currently on 150 mcg of Levothyroxine, but it is not really doing anything for me. I am definitely going to try and get it privately. It's the fatigue, depression and weight gain for me, which is really affecting my quality of life. Thank you for your videos they make me feel like I am not alone 😊

I am in the UK and have just been put on T3 by my GP (I am not seeing an endocrinologist). Apparently, the cost has gone down drastically and the NHS now prescribes it. I mentioned it to my GP who didn't know anything about it and sent an email to the endos at the hospital who suggested putting me on T3. Just ask your GP and see what happens. My T3 is not making any difference yet but I think my dose is too low.

Oh my gosh! I think this video came up because I just got my labs back and my t3 has been low for about a few years. My dose was 5 but was changed to 2.5. Although still the same, my t4 was reduced to 100 mcg. I have been slowly gaining weight and struggling to lose. Sounds like I need to increase my T3 back up and maybe a lil more. I am feeling better with the lower dose of T4 and this could be due to being a carnivore. Thank you for this video and I’m glad I found it!

Had thyroidectomy 7 years ago due to Graves and Graves eye disease. My doctor likes to keep my tsh level around 2 so as not to trigger my eyes, which are finally setting down. Interesting, my experience is very different compared to Dr Aimee with regards to taking T3 at night. I take half of my daily dose of NDT in the evenings before I go to bed. Its like a sleeping pill! Can't keep my eyes open after taking it and I sleep like a baby!

I took T3 briefly. I definitely had more energy during the day but after a few days, I started not sleeping well every third night or so, then that next day, I wouldn't just feel tired, I'd feel sick. It was so much worse than my now very normal slightly sluggish energy level that I decided to stay with slightly sluggish.

It takes time to build up T4 and T3 in the body. Admittedly T3 metabolizes much quicker then T4 but by the sounds of it your body built up to much T3 so you became hypo briefly then got sick. If you felt good on it at the start id just cut the dosage way back as it takes time for it to accumulate in the body.

I take LDN 5mg right before bed. I used to take my tirosint and some of my t3 at the same time but I was waking up in the middle of the night ready to go. I am up every 2 hrs as it is to dose ghrp multiple times. So now I take my my tirosint around 2am and wake up at 3am. And take my t3 sublingually when I wake up. Then I dose more t3 sublingually in the early afternoon. I find the tirosint to be stimulating about 2 hrs after I take it.

Dr. I had my thyroidectomy about 32 years ago. I have been taking only levothyroxine. I’m in the worst shape of my life: extremely overweight, extreme hair loss and infinite fatigue. I have never had the fortune of meeting an Endocronologist who gives a damn. The last Endocronologist that I saw told me that “ everything looks normal”. I asked for t3 ( I knew just a bit ) and she said I didn’t need it… Where do I start?

The discussion on taking T3 medications in split doses you failed to give the hours the drug is effective. I thought I read on your web site that liothyronine is effective for around 3hrs (could be wrong as I read so many things, forget a lot). If I have an afternoon slump, how many hours prior to the slump should I take the T3? If I have a difficult awakening/morning is the T3 at 11PM going to improve the situation or will the T3 be gone from my body because too many hours have past?
