The T880 and W990 are very different trucks....or are they? We're going to talk about what's different in these two trucks and what's the same....and why you need one or the other.
I really like this comparison. The T880 was my favorite back when it was announced. Now that the W990 is somewhat similar and it's quickly became my favorite as well. The T880 is a great truck and I was the first driver who was pushing for it back in late 2013 and now the boss has over 20 of them I think. Trying to get this W990 in the fleet one day. I helped spec out one and as a dump truck you can have the same wheelbase and the W990 in overall length is a lil bit shorter. I was gonna have it the same frame rail length as my current T880 and our salesman was like, " It's gonna be a pain trying to maneuver it around". It would have put the truck in the category of the 32' bridge length versus the 31' of my current truck, but I was willing to take on that challenge. Lol! I know some guys with Volvo's that have the 32' bridge and they also say certain turns can be a challenge. Now visibility is definitely better with the T880, sat in a W990 at MATS and you definitely notice the difference. I drive with the seat to the floor so I don't even see the hood. The W990 you're gonna have to be a lil bit more cautious to that right front corner. Both of these trucks are great regardless of how you spec them and set them up. It's a matter of like Josh said about what works for you. I think Josh knows what my choice would be.
Good job once again Josh, really look forward to all your videos. 1 question I still stuck on how the ultra shift actually works. Oh well I've got an 18spd..😂😂
Thanks!!! I have fun making the videos. The transmission works the same as a manual, just instead of a shifter coming through the floor, there's two solenoids on top of the tranmission that make it all work. :D
Dont think you will get your point with the "stick guys" but its worth the try. I want to see an ultra shift video i want to learn how to use it better
Totally makes sense. I'm probabl not going to be able to get to that this week, but it's a great idea for next week. I'll have to put some serious thought into that one.
Family friend of ours just bought a 40in flat top W990 tri drive log truck and retired his 1990 Western Star, he loves the ride of the W990 and said he didnt realize how uncomfortable his worn out truck was until driving his 990.
🤔 out of a Western Star and into a W990. Some claim that the W990 looks like a Western Star, but I myself having driven a Western Star back in the early 2000's and I don't even think they look alike or similar. Definitely 2 different trucks. Put them side by side and you'll see the differences. Hope he enjoys his new W990.
@@waynenorbreyjr9371 I can see similarities between the freightshaker coranado and 990, but not so much the westernstars, perhaps the t800/t880 vs the 4900SA and SB models would be a similar comparison
cooling capacity depends on the engine size and power rating and it is designed to maintain operation temp ideal not to over cool the engine which would make it consume more fuel
Cooling systems have thermostats in them in order to control the operating temperature. No risk of running too cool with that.. Have been in cars and trucks for 60-70 years. :D
I'm gonna buy one or the other and your video was informative thank you! But which suspension is the smoothest best ride? Too many choices and nobody at dealership is any help?
Glad to hear you're getting one! Smoothest is a relative term Randy and there are a lot of things that go into how smooth a truck will be. Wheelbase, loading, frame strength, tires, etc. There's a lot to it. It also depends on what you're doing. If you're just over the road, the AG400L is great. If you do dump work or ever head off of the main roads, then the AG400 is the ticket. If you haul heavy, the the New Way suspensions are often a great way to go.
Back to the Ultrashift thing. I've driven a couple 2020 T880s with them and noticed it takes more pressing the throttle to get the clutch to engage then 2019s. Programing change? Also not a fan of them in tight places but you won't spill your coffee when it shifts.
They are constantly getting better and better. I'm willing to bet if you visited the dealership for some work and they updated the firmware/programming that you'd end up with the same thing on the 2019's.
I install custom PTO systems for a local dealers of all makes. Its just something I noticed in the last round of 5 T880s we did. They have never been hooked to a trailer. I know the truck learns as you drive it so the engagement and shift feel is going to change. It was different from a couple of W900s but the gear selector is different in those trucks.
Nice recovery on the 990 Josh. I do have a question, can you get the best of both worlds? The cooling capacity of the W990 with the setback front axle?
The K125 96 inch bbc flattop cabover. BC3 Cummins 4x4 spicer 390 rears 16ft wheelbase steers to center of tandems. Dual 120 fuel tanks. Hah. I'll take a tanker spec T880 with a 13speed RR
@@Dirt_Relocation_Specialist We get a lot of mixer companies here that run them also.....it's just not that we typically get new ones in the shop. They usually come from Kimbal
I think, you just sold a whole lot of W990’s ... it’s the perfect mix compromise between the old W900 and T800. Needs to be pretty niche to spec out a 880 when the 990 specs are just that good.
Coming from a T880 driver. I just can’t get past not seeing my hood and having to guess where it’s at while cornering. Wish the W990 had been released when my current truck was ordered. Sincerely, A Previous Long time long hood driver ((Pete 389, and W900))
@@philipscfarms I was thinking the same thing. Definitely wished that the W990 was released back in 2016 when I spec'd out my current T880. Now I'm just going to have to talk the boss into getting a W990.
@@Dirt_Relocation_Specialist If I'm not mistaken the T880S was targeted to take that market. I guess Josh would know if the W900S is still available. A lot of companies that I know of have switched to the T880S instead of buying the W900S.
Totally different. The T660 is a 1.9m cab like the W900 and the T680 is the 2.1m cab which is the more modern design. You can get the same chassis options, but the cabs, sleepers, and hoods are totally different.
There are 3 hoods for the T880. Long, short, and for the set forward axle. The short hood is only for the MX13 and MX 11 engines. The height is very close to the same on all of them.

But actually my favorite is a 389 spec'd by Peterbilt Steve at Rush Truck Center in Tulsa Oklahoma. all time favorite is Life is good. Tim Gorley's Come On. But if I am to order a Kenworth when I'm ready instead it'll be from you same specs as the Peterbilt this is what I want equivalent X15 Cummins 565hp 2050 torque 18 speed 3.36 gears 40K Rears 13.2k front axle 8 bag airleaf best interior double frame 290 in wheelbase Studio sleeper big fuel tank big Def tank left lane hot rod rooster Cruiser... sorry for the paragraph
