I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of Sawstop service. I got a new Jobsite saw and within about 30 minutes of use the drive belt shredded into pieces. I wrote an email on their service site and received a phone call within minutes. The emailed me the most detailed and simple to follow instructions to replace the belt they was over-nighted right to my home free of charge. It took about 30 minutes because I was also taking pictures for them. Never had another minutes trouble and I love the saw. It's the only thing in my shop that I have paid full retail for and it's worth every penny to a raw beginner that, prior to my purchase, had never pushed a board through a table saw.

A homemade zero clearance insert and the best blade I could get (Freud have been among the best value) has actually made my cheap-ass Mastercraft saw a viable tablesaw for a home shop! Congrats and best wishes to the small shave. Go Jeff!

Sawstop recommends NOT using any blade with the "safety shoulders" as it adds to the amount of time the blade stops in the cartridge should an accident occur. (which would include the Freud flat grind rip) The potential is there to have a slightly more severe injury than if using a blade with nothing but teeth where the blade would stop quicker. Not sure if you're aware of this but I've never heard you mention it. Appreciate all you do, Rob - thank you! But 10 kids? Wow - you take "family man" to a whole new level!

Yes, this point has been discussed elswhere on YT, for example see Rex Krueger's confessional video about his little SawStop accident. While saved from a maiming, he definitely sustained more damage than expected from SawStop technology. The reason can be seen in the chip limiting nibs on his saw blade. Instead of the teeth burying themselves in the aluminum block as planned, those nibs perfomed flawlessly and the blade shaved its way to a stop, cutting Rex up some in the process. Ironic, isn't it?

That infinity throat plate is awesome but they don’t make it for the “new Delta Unisaw” so I’m adapting one to fit. Between 80 and 90 bucks. Hopefully they’ll make them for my saw in the future...

I was told by a SawStop rep that SawStop will replace any cartridge that has been set off for free. Most people buy a spare up front and if/when they set it off they can just swap out the cartridge (and blade if necessary) and send the used cartridge back to SawStop and SawStop will send them a replacement for free. That way there is very little (if any barring any major injury) down time for the machine.
@RobCosmanWoodworking

they will replace a cartridge if it touched flesh, not metal, wet wood or any other conductive materail.

Love these series, Rob. The bandsaw and table saw videos have all been fantastic. Quick question - any thoughts/recommendations regarding carbide table saw blade sharpening? I can send them to a local sharpening service via my local Woodcraft store, which seems to do an ok job, and there's also the Forrest sharpening service which is pricier but claims to offer a premium service. Never used that one though.

Does a table saw need a riving knife when breaking down plywood?
@leehaelters6182
@leehaelters6182 4 года назад
Mike, a riving knife will prevent a kerf from closing up and pinching the blade due to internal stresses, it is true, but it will also guard against a workpiece that has been pressed into the blade, or knocked askew onto the back teeth. So yes, it is quite useful for plywood, in my opinion. And the bigger the sheet, the more it is needed.

most people will fall all over sawstop, and of course anyone with any sense would love to have one, that being said there is a VERY large amount of people that just can't financially pull it off.... so they wind up with decent used cabinet saws without the safety features.... here's what pisses me off about sawstop they vald to save "everyone's" fingers... even promising a $450 compact contractors saw, since then they have been bought up by the same conglomerate that owns festard... it's safe to say only the more well off are going to get the comfort in knowing their fingers are safe.... so if you dont have a minimum of $1500 (3 times $450) tough lucky....

I say blame all the other manufacturers, not SawStop. They were given the opportunity, and ignored it. They could have been developing their own systems all these years since, but declined to. There is an even better solution now, embodied by Felder. It has even better, non-contact sensing, and repeatable non-destructive retraction; overcoming all objections. Industrial grade machinery, to be sure, but I will be interested to see if the tech is available for license, as it should be. Bosch's saw, with its non destructive blade retraction, only infringed with the sensor. Felder's sensing technology should be easily grafted, I would think, and would be affordable compared to the expense of Felder's retraction innovation.

"They keep talking about progress... but we still dig holes with shovels." - Ernest Borgnine, Airwolf. I totally get that when it's not blowing its trigger over an imagined electrical ground fault or short, or having a capacitor (wait which capacitor was it) die it can prevent hot dogs from getting nicked. Good on them hot dogs. Of all the videos I've ever watched and all the testimonies from SawStop owners, I've yet to see one that says "OH MY GOD this SawStop™ saved me... a regular table saw would have cut my hand open and severed my fingers." No, it's mostly anecdotal "Well this COULD have happened but thank goodness SawStop™ saved it!" Not really. Most people like to justify why they paid twice as much for something, and saying it is safer ... just a little more hassle... oh and those cartridges... and keep a spare... and capacitors (seriously, it's a table saw)... but SAFETY FIRST. Yes. Safety first. Which makes SawStop a nonstarter. Glad you're enjoying it, though, despite those multiple periods of time you couldn't use it at all. I've seen your work, and your dovetails are legendary. You still have ten fingers. I can't help but think that's because of the Rob Cosman brain... not the brand of table saw. Best wishes in these weird times. Keep healthy. Stay safe. But yeah, no need to pay triple for a table saw if you can keep your hand out of the blade... Ehud Gavron Tucson, Arizona US
@uhavenosushi
@uhavenosushi 4 года назад
Ehud Gavron I know a 52 year (now deceased) cabinet maker who cut off two fingers 45 years into the job. He had more experience with table saws than rob does. It’s not who you are or how much experience you have, sawstop technology works and has saved many a finger. Attitudes like yours are why we still have people constantly loses digits and while hands to table saws.
