Small bluegills are better eating especially with sushi chef level filleting skills

Good tips on using ice jigs. They are amazing all year round. We like switching to them lat July and August when it's hot and the fish are being finicky again. Also using stuff that looks like bugs. That's why flyfishing is ideal for bluegills when you can get a fly down to them.

Thats why I do a lot of "Casting" for gills! A lot of people forget about that mid summer hump!

DWS, thank you for explaining, and sharing your hard earned knowledge. I am sure it will keep a lot of people from wasting years trying to figure out how to catch descent Bluegill. I know fishermen that develop lock jaw when asked about how they caught a certain type of fish, and you could not pry their mouth open with a pry bar. Your video was very informative, and I am sure, very excruciating for you to do, but you chose to help your fellow man, and I thank you for that.

I just hope most are responsible enough to take care of the special fish that are becoming over harvested and almost none existent... as I tried to convey 8in and smaller go ahead and eat what you can fit in your stomach but anything bigger really needs to stay in that body of water!

So are all the lakes that had all of the big gills fished out never going to have big gills again or is it just going to take an absurd amount of time for them to come back if it’s left alone?
@DWSOutdoors
@DWSOutdoors 4 года назад
The MONSTER gill lakes once size structure is destroyed to the point a big fish in that lake is 6in you have lost that lakes ability to produce big fish... But if you have a lake that is getting nocked down but still holds remnants of big gills like every once and a while you get a 9+ then those lake need a size cap at like 8in so that the lake resets itself to making it so that only the BIGGEST gills reproduce... I will never keep a gill over 9in anymore and if I can if I am keeping fish I keep 7-8 1/2in

Basically you can never kill them all so if there was no limit but you couldn't keep anything over the biggest gills in the lake so say you can catch 8 1/2s pretty regular but the average size is 7in then 7 1/2 or 8in size cap with no limit below that would make for very fast growing MONSTER gill lake!

DWS Outdoors thanks! I wish more rules like that would be put in place for gills. Rules like that would probably be good for the pike population too. I was just confused about them not growing to huge sizes if all the big fish are taken out. When people stock farm ponds for monster gills they are all starting from the same size and there are no large gills already in the water. I wasn’t sure how the pond gills can grow to monster sizes when there are no big gills already in the water while lakes with all the big gills removed will stunt the other fish. Is there any ways to fix lakes with all the big gills being removed? Would adding new fish to the gene pool help?

Most pond stocking is starting from 0 and working its way up and if you have a balanced pond big bluegills become the only ones to breed so the genetic cues say you must be bigger than them to be successful at breeding! Its a complicated mess to explain... but simply put if you want big fish get rid of a good number of small fish... lol

I just caught my pb Gill 9 1/2 x5 inch gill and for a state thats known for its salmon and trout and not for warm water species I feel that’s pretty good plus been getting a lot of 8 inch fish too I catch and release all fish cause I don’t eat much fish but for some reason our crappie don’t get all that big😔 8-9 inch crappie is big where I’m at so idk

Josh Westfall 9.5 is a good Gill! 👊🏼🎣 congrats! As far as the short Crappie there might be some bigger ones around you just need to try some bigger baits!

You make a compelling argument for the conservation of panfish. I usually keep bluegill and pumpkinseed when the fish are between six and seven inches--though it is always a thrill catching eight and nine-inch fish. I will be sure to release the fish that are eight inches and above.

I try to help spread the truth of the science of it when I can! A lot of "Opinion" was passed on as facts for a long time! I just hope I can do my part to keep the BEAST Gills around for the next generation! Im glad you enjoyed the video I hope you can get yourself a 10in some day to see what those freaks can do to an ultralight!

@@DWSOutdoors The sad thing for me is looking back at my boyhood when grownups told me that sunfish were a nuisance--that you should toss them on the shore as they stole your bait and kept you from catching the desired fish. I know better now and really appreciate the various species of panfish--so much so that like you, I devote a great deal of time and effort into mastering the techniques of catching them.

Thats the big one! "Mom told me to" "Dad told me to" "Grandpa told me to" really messed with a lot of fisheries! The biggest thing people don't realize is that there are more types of panfish then any other fresh water gamefish in North America! So there are plenty to chase and master! Glad to hear you're having as much fun as me with the quest to master them all! lol

How deep u usually fish under a bobber?
@DWSOutdoors

Josh Westfall it really depends on the body of water and time of year? Spring and fall tend to be shallow months while mid summer and winter can be deep!
