I see the Garage man specials rolling in 😂 Hard to blame an engine due to some hack install though. Here is my findings after installing a 100 or so 20X and 20Y engines. In single avcs cars with stock stuff we see 250-270whp. Add the basics like a down pipe we see 270-290 Duel avcs cars we see 280-290 with stock stuff. With basic bolt on’s they are reliable into 350whp. Really hard to beat value when they are a 1/10th the cost of a stock rebuild. 5 tuners within hours of myself will tune them via cobb and or opensource and even ecutek. Yes they have lower then the 2.5 torque, but man’s car sitting with a blown engine in his driveway for 3 years had 0 torque.

Thanks for sharing your insight. My own opinion is that ej255, 20x, and 20y are all fine engines, but 20x and 20y are not cheaper to swap in (when done well). The mods needed to the 20x/rewiring for 20x ecu and the retuning/dual ecu setup negate the savings, especially if you arent diy. With the ej255, the motor itself, used motorset / longblock or new shortblock with cleaned up heads the obvious up front cost may seem like a lot, but theres really no hidden costs, retunes or inspection problems. After dealing with swapping both, Id always recommend 255. Its less headaches, less downtime, same money or less when done right and better for resale. 20x/20y probably wins for mpg. Id never disrespect a 20x/20y swap thats done right (use jdm ecu or swap cam and cam gear from 255 and relash). Swapping just the cam gear, plugging the avcs oil feed, skipping the teeth is interesting but not super attractive to me. Pretty funny the car in the vid came in with the wrong plugs 👀🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣

Great video. Very informative. The EJ20x works OK in its proper home car but without control over the exhaust cams it is always a bad compromise when a crated factory ej255 is cheap as chips. I tune lots of these over in the UK and lots have issues with the avcs pulleys sticking either because the filters are still in the oil feed lines or internally within the pulleys themselves.

If you can buy the motor from a reputable source, and you know what you're doing, these ej20x/y motors are the way to go and are actually better than the stock engines (they have higher compression and a stronger Crank). I have an ej20x installed on my '05 Outback XT and it's been working great, 5,200 miles later, no issues. However, I did my homework and did the swap correctly. Since this motor is dual AVCS, I swapped the exhaust ej255 Cam Sprockets to it and retarded their timing by 1 tooth or around 7 degrees and I have it running with the USDM ECU, requires tuning afterwards of course. Essentially what I did makes it a hybrid ej255/20x, single AVCS.. I even kept its jdm twin scroll turbo with a JDM DP flange. Retarding the timing on the Ex. Sprockets by 7 degrees will mimic the ej255 timing better. Everything else remained the same, all sensors, switches, everything above the long block is USDM, even the injectors. I also installed a Moroso pickup tube, a new O2 sensor and did a Cylinder 4 cooling mod. Jesse from Subie Sanctuary does these swaps all the time. He helped me out a lot!

People need to become more familiar with the EJ20X/Y engines so they can identify them if buying a used car. Any vehicle with one of these swaps should be valued slightly higher than if it were being sold with a blown engine because if you're buying the car for performance then you need to factor in the cost of installing the correct engine (long block, timing components, etc.).

I would say this would be a good ideas swap if you were using while saving money to purchase a Type RA short block. No these motors are not ideal if you want it to be permanent and are looking to make serious power out of them. You also have to take into fact that the 20xs are open deck motors ….. That being said I would push these motors past 300hp. My 255 is not blown up but I’m having low compression issues. But $5,000 for the Type RA short block plus parts such as gaskets, timing belt kit, etc is just not in my budget right now. So I will do a 20x swap. And just will save up the money to rebuild my 255. But I think in my situation it’s just more ideal.

I’ve owned these engines in the cars they are meant to be in and they are great engines, I think that they get a bad name in the US from tuners but I think most of the time it’s because they aren’t set up properly. The rods aren’t as strong as ej25 ones so they won’t ever make the same power as the 2.5 but I had a 20Y with a 3076 that had full boost roughly the same time as this one and made peak power at 7200rpm. It was heavily fuel limited so didn’t make a huge amount of power but it drove great.
@WT4T
@WT4T 3 месяца назад
I'm confident they are great in the car and with the computer they are meant to be ran with. It's the half swaps that are the issue 100%. Well, that and the fact that we're getting warehoused junkyard motors in completely unknown condition that have been sitting for who knows how long

I’ve got a 20x I’m my 04 STi. The only reason I went this way was to save money…that said I don’t think they are as bad as people say. I’m an extreme amateur when it comes to tuning but I’m happy with my results. 1. Because we have no exhaust AVCs you need to clock the exhaust cams by a tooth. 2. You absolutely need to have a functioning intake AVCs. I’m running 40° at all load low rpm sections of my map, the difference between this and a stock map is massive in terms of torque and spool. 3. They do horribly on west coast gas. I moved from Washington to BC ( bad to worse in terms of fuel quality) and I had to pull a substantial amount or boost and timing out of my map just to drive. It was an absolute pinging whining dog. 4. Octane I’m running an 18g blouch turbo, 1050s and a custom meth setup. I have full boost my 3200, full torque by 3800 ( 330 according to VD) and it pulls like a train to my 7600rpm redline. I’m sure when I put my 257 back in with the same bolt ons I’ll have more , but man, while I wait this engine is at least 80% as good for a serious fraction of the price. If you give these some octane and have a functioning AVCs you might be surprised.

@@WT4T I’m not arguing that it’s a better engine. Like I said I think it’s worth 800 and like I said , I’d prefer to have my 257. Never did I say anything like they are just as good as a 257. What I did say is they work decent if you use appropriate fuel and tune the AVCs and that it cost $800 witch is less than half of the cost of my last short block. I’m also saying, dude…. Yeah….. it’s not going going to run great if the only AVCs you have is obviously completely broken lol. I’m extremely happy with my 255 RT 660s breaking traction in a straight line on the auto x course at temp. As good as a 257 that cost 4x the price? No Trash? No

I also put a new timing kit on, and plugged exhaust avcs cam ports, used plastic 255 ex cam gears (retarted 1 tooth). These motors run much much better on e85. A opensource custom e-tune is flashed on and runs very smooth…bc of Cobb’s latest GS stunt. It’s a good motor to get you back on the road on a budget, but it’s not gonna make big power so you have to set your expectations up front prior to going this route.

@@WT4T that’s very surprising, this is my 3rd 20X swap and all have ran nearly perfect. I partially blame the people doing this swap not doing research prior to doing the swap/cutting corners. Then wondering why it doesn’t yield the high expectations - leading to a bad wrap on the motor. I have to still edit a video and post on my channel outlining the steps I take to run this motor, may help others in the future see some of the results I’ve had with them.

I often feel like there’s a lot of hate for these engines because people just don’t want to work on something that doesn’t follow the books the read. These motors are strong , and work very well. And tbh are better than the ej255 , those engines are absolute garbage and havnt seen one that didn’t fail… the ej20x swap isn’t that hard , catless DP , inlet , intercooler , swap in the ej255 manifold and turbo , cam gears and you’re good to go. I’ve had mine in my car with a full AVCs delete for 2 years now , makes 300hp on 15 psi and very minimal mods. And trust me it’s just as fast …. And about 2 thousand dollars cheaper than replacing the ej255 which is shit anyways.

Sure, there's successes however as a tuner, the VAST majority that come to me are a total mess. I'm not the only tuner who has this opinion, most reputable tuners just won't touch them because of all the issues we see. It's just not worth it hoping the person did their part right.
@NATEDIZZLES813

The main reason 255/257s fail is because they are either not maintained well, people add mods and just do not tune them, or they get these random " Tuners" who don't know what they are doing. I definitely will beg to differ on your opinion of the 255/257. I happen to believe they are great motors! Are they as reliable as the old school 205/207 motors? IMO no. But with the 255/257 they are capable of producing more TQ then ANY EJ motor ever built! The only problem with the 255/257 is that to me they have the Golden Pu**y syndrome. The prices for these motors is just OBSURD! I have seen people selling these motors used with 144,000 to as high as 180,000 miles for no less then $4,000! That is absolutely insane!! But no I don't believe the 255/257 motors are garbage. Besides the 02-03 205/207s..... They are one of the best motors Subaru has made.... Again IMO

Question would a jdm ej205 in a 2002 Wrx with 1050 on e85 at altitude with a vf48 worth getting the jdm ej205 or building a hybrid I don’t want to build a hybrid 2.5 cuz I just blew one and was wondering if the compression is to high for like 260hp
@WT4T
@WT4T 5 месяцев назад
That setup should be amazing! You might consider keeping it td04 tho to keep it extra responsive at altitude. The extra octane of e85 should still get you to your power goal.

Say what you want I enjoy my EJ20X swaps. I have one in my 17 STI with an FP green that rips and sounds awesome. I have another in my widebdy 01 GC coupe with a VF48 and it rips also. IWith the forged piston crown I would even argue these mtoors are stronger than the OEM 2.5. They rev to 7500 and the power band is a little different but not bad. The single AVCS cars just need to retard exhaust cam timing one tooth and it runs just lik the original single AVCS motor. I tune Open Source/DIme MOD. Honestly I like people unkowingly trash them so they stay cheap. They keep my cars on the road While I build the 2.5 properly.

@@WT4T the one in your video was obviously put together at home by someone who had little to no idea how to put the car together. Very sloppy with cheap parts. The issues noted were 95% due to installer error. Shops dont like these motors because people dont have to spend 15K on a motor build with them. Done right these motors can support 350WHP and are fine for people with stock turbos.

If ppl going to swap ej20x dual svcs into single avcs chassis, The exhaust cams and pulley need to be swapped out... Evennlocking the stock one wont making any good power/torque... Simply because it work advance and retard both way through all engine load and rev range..... Then sir pump and egr delete complexity, Waste of money and time to r3doing all of that... And not mention problematic avcs pulley internal that could be broken on these dual avcs engine.. (not only on ej20x, but also jdm ej207 dual avcs have this broken avcs syndrom) Lrave jdm motors for us asians pleaseee.. 😝
